    It does. Apply for a new policy. You'll be asked how many claims you've made, regardless of fault. And that number will affect your premium.

    I loved the magic hangup ping. Send an ICMP ping with the packet "+++ATH0". First ping +++ would wake the modem into command state. A second later, "ATH0", bye bye.

    Not every job should have to pay enough to support a person, or their family.

    I disagree. Any fulltime job that requires you to devote a 'fulltime' amount of your week should provide you with the sustenance to sustain you for the remainder.

    The problem is that some of your metrics aren't of the sys admin, but of the software (often external) used. Is "amount of spam prevented" a function of your sysadmin 'workload', or the fact that you just shelled out for two Barracudas?

    Is the "estimated number of malware infections prevented" a function of your sysadmin workload, or because someone keeps paying the bills on your Symantec license?

    Personally, I split sysadmin work up into two categories: doing something and making it so you don't have to do anything. The second is much more important, but much harder to quantify.

    You used eleven and a half words to communicate a concept that could have been done with two: being reactive and proactive. I know the latter has been sullied by its use in jargon bingo, but we are still capable of understanding the concept.

    Huh? My connection to my ISP is not affected by another user off my router using my bandwidth? How do you figure? What on earth has switching to do with it? (And that's apropos of the fact that /wireless/ LAN is /not/ switched (at least in the traditional sense).)

    Uhh, based on what tests? Guys in forums saying "My FTP ran at this speed before, now it runs at this speed."? That isn't a reliable metric, shocking as it may seem to people on Slashdot.

    The thing I do like about standalone units, locally stored maps for when you have no network at all, does not apply to any other phone anyway (that I know of).

    Live Search for mobile will use up to 64mb of storage card space for offline (and on) map caching.

    So he connected to the WAP and proceeded to access the net at 0bps, thereby not depriving the owner of any of their paid bandwidth? I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion.

    That makes no sense. If I have x bits of bandwith, and you are using y, you are denying me y bits of my bandwidth for as long as you have it. This true for y>1 through y=x.

    Could be. Or your laptop could suck. Or its drivers. Especially since I have a Pentium M laptop that is able to play H 264 movies seamlessly, streamed wirelessly (over a busy wireless network).

    That article is all too 'unfair credit card company - look at the bias'. Til you read one of the comments that points to an association's guidelines that states that NEITHER party's non-appearance at arbitration can be used as sole grounds for a default.     You're (apparently) not familiar with the outcome of most class action suits. Take the one against Netflix, for billing and other issues.

    Successful plaintiffs in the class got... a voucher, good for discounted membership to Netflix.

    Of course if you actually read the court papers, it seems like they're trying to argue that they didn't NEED a judgment to be entered, and in fact, "no formal judgment has been entered".

    IANAL (though I did provide technical interpretation to them), but the motion in the linked PDF had a little more substance and was a little less black and white than "they're ignoring the judgment to pay our costs".

    I might have the opinion the sky is muave, but that doesn't make it so. You can't offer factually incorrect information and then say it's OK because it's your "opinion".

    Really? It seemed to me the trend was CSS and DHTML. The one area Flash has taken off is in embedded video. So far I've not missed flash for anything.

    Nice double standard you got going there.

    Now you might say, that doesn't count because it's "just" a browser based app. But all of the applications listed there have been tailored to fit and work well on the iPhone. Most of the even use fragments of custom CSS that helps define the appearance for the iPhone specifically. If it's tailored to the platform, then how is using the browser as a GUI library really that much different than a true native app as far as the intent of the developer, and interaction by the user? There are even proof of concept web-based apps that detect phone rotation and respond accordingly...

    It's fantastic. For years, I've heard Mac fans (amongst others, sure) moan loudly about web standards. Browser independence. Railing against websites that discriminate against Safari. That are "best viewed in IE".

    Now, there's the iPhone. And suddenly coding HTML and CSS to meet the needs of one device / browser combination is apparently A-ok, because it's their device. I see.
