I'll third this. Please mod what is probably one of the most useful posts here down! And adolf, I take offense at your sig. We don't let Colin join in the hammering.
I feel that I should add that I wasn't disgusted be the scifi I've read. Sure, it was entertaining and most of it made for nice breezy reading. I think the categorization of a lot of it being "juvenile" is spot on. The mention of some of Borges' work being borderline scifi, though not categorized as scifi, is certainly understandable. Calvino's work fits in the same category. I will admit that I have read some "good" scifi. Vonnegut, though his writings are always brief, is quite good. Neal Stephenson, though his writings are quite verbose, is usually pretty good, too (though he does have a certain pulpish quality at times). And I should also mention that I like Iain Banks (both with and without the M).
I don't read much scifi at all, but based on the praise that scifi fans have given the few books that I have read, it's looked down upon as a genre for a reason. You folks should try reading some actual literary works sometime.
C'mon, it's not like Ender's Game was even that good of a book. I mean, it wasn't bad at all, but it certainly wasn't the piece of supreme writing that many people make it out to be.
If anything, a good lawyer will tell their client what they want to hear. Who's to say she hasn't been doing this to Bush for the past 20 years? After all, he's exactly the type of person who would be fooled by such a thing.
The problem is that PDF is more or less a final "publishing" solution. You render your completed files to PDF. Sure there are some concessions for making minor changes to the text of PDF files, but generally what you end up with is screwed up text flows. I love PDFs for what they're intended to be used for, and I hate to say this, but this move is only going to bring tons of headaches for people and probably cripple or kill off PDFs within a few years' time.
Mod parent down! If he'd ever actually read the Bible he'd know it was closer to six thousand years. After all, there were far too many people who lived to be 200, 300, and 400 years old. And some were even 100 when they were busy begatting! I guess God must've liked people better back then, cos he certainly let them live a lot longer...
Does anyone else here get the feeling from this that doctors have a sort of "well, that's how it's always been done" approach to medicine? I mean, you'd think that at some point, somebody would have stopped and said "is there a better way to do this?" I guess, in some ways, this guy is that "revolutionary" thinker...
It means that when you're sitting in Yerba Buena Park slurping on your "free" wifi courtesy of Google, that you'll get ads for movies playing at the Metreon.
I would imagine that they don't want to be held liable in case the maps are wrong or out of date or something. Technically, it's a copyright violation. OTOH, it's free publicity for them and a convenience to their riders. Totally a situation of which way the wind is blowing today.
I'm going to offer up my suggestion for an alternative to Media Player Classic, BSPlayer. The featureset of MPC is nice, but I've never been able to stand the interface (and yes, I thought the interface to WMP6 was horrible back in the day). BSPlayer has most, if not all, of the features of MPC, as well as some decent skins (I prefer the included Showtime skin myself).
It sounds like you guys are making a major tradeoff just because you can. You're talking about things that a $100 general purpose CPU can handle quite effectively, yet you're insisting on making a $300+ GPU do it, rather ineffectively i might add, just because someone provided the interface for it. I'm not saying it won't be very handy to offload a lot of this stuff to pixel shaders in the future, but right now, it seems like it's a very immature solution, especially since that GPU's real features will go largely unused. As someone else already pointed out, this sounds a whole lot like the audiophiles -- you have an inkling of what you're dealing with and talking about, but in practice it's obvious to everyone else that you're getting totally fleeced.

mod parent up... inciteful
Is that a typo or were you trying to be punny?
Wow! Leave it to Microsoft to come up with an amazing innovation like disposable rental DVDs.
Thanks for the list. I'll add them to my amazon wishlist.

Ender's Game was real decent science fiction.

...vastly more powerful computers (imagine more computing power in a head-sized device than exists in all the human brains alive today)
And we shall call it "Marvin"

So we just need to go search for Open Document?
I'm sure their solution will involve something about a file menu and selecting "open" : p
Nobody's killed anyone in the name of the flying spagetti monster.
I did it for the pasta!
Miocene Park has a nice ring to it. It's either that or Tertiary Park (if you want to keep with the period names rather than the epoch).

Of course, you could have just looked at the title of your comment

You may as well just pull out all of the The Gashlycrumb Tinies.
I agree. I should be able to sue CmdrTaco for getting me fired.

Therefore, global warning is obviously the result in the increase of recording industry executives.
But I thought that pirates (the 'arrrrr' kind) were the cause of global warming (which I would like to add, does not exist).

A nice brief explanation of the different aspects of copyright.
