  1. Re:Great, but what about... on Legal Restrictions on Cellphone Use Gain Traction · · Score: 1

I think you are on the right track, but not necessarily quite there. The heart of the issue is ABILITY. Just as some are better at math than others, some are better at driving than others. I grew up on a farm, this had me driving a full sized truck from age 7. *private property only - not on any roads* By age 18 I was a better driver than some in their 30s. Some days now I'm a worse driver than a 16 yr old, but I try to acknowlege that I'm struggling with a task at the time and take precautions to remedy that.

Driving exams should be more difficult. They should require people have skill and ability to manuver more than one kind of vehicle. Age should not be the only qualifying factor. Some people are ready to drive at 15.5, and some perhaps at 37. The main problem is not everyone in the US (*sorry it's my only point of reference) has access to mass transit. While I agree that people who drive drunk should be driven over; If their means of transportation to work is removed, what is the true cost to society because of that. It is certaintly less than the cost of a life, but should still be considered.

I have no issue with people talking while driving, as long as they have the ability. They can eat at the same time if they want. This is what should be enforced. Good driving. Target those that are reckless (*who cares if it was because of the kids, the radio, or something on the floor)

I have a huge SUV (suburban) and a midsized car (subaru). Each gets driven differently, and for different purposes. The SUV weighs in at 5200lbs dry. This requires more stopping distance than a small car; however it is practically impossible to leave adequate stopping distance in front of the vehicle on any highway, as if there is room for a car to fit in front of you, one will find the need to occupy that space. A big problem is that most people driving these things do not take any of this into consideration.

Oh and by the way, even though I have two vehicles, I take the bus to work almost every day. I like to enjoy some of the selfish splurges of the American culture, but I try to do so in moderation.

Part of the problem with the US cell market is that carriers here market phones not services. If I buy a verison phone it will be on the CDMA technology. If they further incorporate GSM technology that will enhance the roming capability of the phone and lead to increased fees that they would have to pay for using another providers tower. (the new thing now is not charging customers for roming) I have always bought a higher end cell phone (v3 razr and LG vx8100) I much prefer my non verizon phone because it is completely unlocked. (I payed dearly for it, but I can pop in any sim card and I get service) To those considering Verizon I ask you one question: "How DO you feel about being nickle and dimed for EVERYTHING?" The other service provider that I have allows (free with any plan) 500kb data transfer (monthly) all incoming txt messages free and 500 outgoing txt messages before they start charging me for it. I can buy games for my phone for $3-$7 one time fee -- they are mine to keep and love forever. Verizon: send/recieve pic or video - $.25 each send/recieve txt - $.10 each web on phone - $4.99 mo games/programs (getitnow) - monthly subscription for about $4 or purchase for up to $14 video on demand (vcast) $15 monthly and don't forget base service starting at $35 a month

  22. Complete Reform on States Push to Collect Online Sales Tax · · Score: 2, Interesting

In order to create taxes that treat everyone fairly there are several things that need to happen. The first is that the government needs to be run like a business. Profitibility ought to be important. A yearly loss SHOULD be a bad thing. Second if income taxes were removed and a sales tax was put on all items that was equal across the country those that buy the most goods pay the most taxes. This also means that those who are at the poverty level can buy less expensive necessities and pay less taxes. The people who need a Bentley will in turn be taxed approprately (at the same rate as everyone else) but because it is a more expensive item, more gross taxes are paid. This would remove challenge, and inconsistancy in taxes. Simplification will never prevail. Todays mighty oak is just yesterdays nut that held its ground.
