Some really old LCDs on early to mid 90s laptops couldn't refresh fast enough to track the mouse. My Toshiba Portege from 1997ish had already ovecome that problem.
The laptop I had prior to that (an IBM 360C with a 486) did have the problem of the cursor fading away to nothing as you moved it. Most laptops came with a mouse driver that enabled mouse "trails" so you could keep track of the cursor.
If I recall, there were still a few models available through about 1998 that didn't have active matrix or TFT LCDs, but not many.
Most people I know pronounce the letters in the acronym LED. It is proper to say "an L E D" in the same way it is proper to ask Pat Sajak: "may I have an L, please?"
Geosynchrous orbit is 22,500 miles or 36,210 km. This thing could definitely take one out.
Let's not forget that /. covered this 3 years ago.

yeah, yeah, that's all I ever heard about when I live in Iowa. "We've got the ICN, we're more advanced than the other states".
Trouble was, ONLY the government offices, schools, and a very select few large corporations had access to the ICN.
Iowa had remote college courses over microwave links in the late 70s. The ICN just replaced a cheap microwave network with a more costly fiber network.
Did any small businesses, start-ups, or even small private colleges get any benifit out of the ICN? The answer I'm afraid, is "No".
Am I not now as I type this building a web page using no html of mine own? Also claimed in the patent was something to the effect of different users would have different priveleges, and as such not all users would have access to all the information?
The technology required to cross the atlantic in 3 days has been around for almost 40 years.
The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was commissioned in 1963. It happens to be nuclear, but two other ships in it's class are oil burners they are the USS Kenedy and the USS America.
This class of aircraft carrier displaces 80,000 tons, can carry a crew complement of over 5,000 people plus 120 airplanes. Janes book of fighting ships list the top speed of the carriers at 35+ knots. During desert storm, the USS Kenedy left Norfolk, VA on a Thursday (sorry, don't remember the exact date.) One of my best friends was on board. He called me from Turkey on Sunday at noon and told me they'd been in port for almost 12 hours. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, sure sounds like 3 days to cross the Atlantic AND the Mediteranian.
Of course from what I've heard, it costs in excess of $1 million per day to cruise at that speed, but it has and is still being done today by the US Navy.
Actually, all we get is the PPC processors. To make it a mac would take the Apple ROMs so don't get your hopes up about running OS9 concurrent with linux on a i386.

Hopefully that URL will get crawled soon.

It's working fine now. I just downloaded the linux kernel 2.4.13-21S src rpm.
Moore simply predicted the growth rate, he did not cause it.

Someone did come up with this before.

Did you read the article?
'McKenna and Lieberman scratch the CDs so they can't be sent out again and then they loop them on string'
I don't think I've ever seen a new article link close to an exe, let alone directly to it.
Half the time they don't even link to images.
Slashdot is a source of info, of pure fun and of substancial debates.
:)
Debates, like how to spell substantial
Um, no.

Did anyone notice the marketing genius on the agate web site?
"The 16mb USB Q "hard drive" stores up to 10 times more information than the standard 3.5" floppy disk. "
Last I checked 1.44MB * 10 = 14.4MB which is somewhat less than 16MB. Maybe they should have said more than 10 times?

I've never been able to find anything by searching on the Microsoft Site. Google or AltaVista have a better index of MS than MS does.
