  1. To me the reason for this seems obvious: They want to have a smooth interface whereby the user can sync music to the car while at home so they can listen to music while driving in places without connectivity. Some streaming services have this, but they need a unique UX design for the car.

"There are no theories in evolution about how life began."

I know. One time, someone tried to tell me that Darwin's work was called "Origin of Species". Some people are just so dumb.

Learn the scientific method, read Origin of Species, and read Darwin's Black Box. (Brief History of Time might come in handy too, though "brief" is a relative term here.) THEN you may discuss the ID v Evolution debate.

While you're at it, teach your kids the scientific method. School won't.

Not every lsat person in the ID camp is biased and corruptive... "The new curriculum mentions that theories of life arising from similar building-block molecules through purely random processes can be challenged by recent findings in the fossil record and by molecular biology. " Assuming this is true, it sounds reasonable and scientific enough to be taught. Debate based on facts is the lifeblood opf science ...but many push the issue way to far: "[Science is] no longer limited to the search for natural explanations of phenomena." Never scientifically assume that something exists when it cannot be measured. Rather, seek to measure it. If it takes a hundred years to find out whether it's really there or not, fine. At least we learned something. With our new neo-science, we may never learn everything. Slashdotters from kansas: if you want to be a geek, you should probably move to a different state. [By the way, I have a biblical christian worldview. I simply don't see any scientific theories (or laws, for that matter) as being hostile to what I think is truth. Science brings progress.]

I also both agree and disagree with you.

Microsoft can't make an apple computer non functional. All it can do is compete. The leader remains the leader, wether through good ol' fashioned competion or underhanded "competition". If someone uses MS office over OO.o, they choose to.

Many a Linux user here on slashdot would say "You can render my Linux installation useless when you pry it from my cold, dead hands." (The same holds true, if not moreso, for the Mac users.)

Microsoft gave Apple money because the market needed to be shared. (Much like scene where the idea oif oligopoly was conceived in "A Beautiful Mind")

    oligopoly

A market in which a limited number of sellers follow the lead of a single major firm. For example, the domestic automobile market was long characterized as an oligopoly, with American Motors, Chrysler, and Ford following the pricing lead of industry giant General Motors. Compare monopoly, oligopsony.

  13. Science vs. Faith on Is The U.S. Becoming Anti-Science? · · Score: 1

This whole argument stems from the difference between science and faith.

Science is not the truth. Science is the search for truth. Anything that is proven to happen that goes agaisnt science doesnt discount science, it changes science.

If someone has faith that God created the earth, fine. The fact is that we don't know. Science suggests evolution, but evolution (as the origin of species) is not proven.

More discovery to follow. In 100 years, do a google search. You will see that the theory of evolution has been either altered or thrown out.

  16. I like Windows XP. on Pepping Up Windows · · Score: 1

Windows is idiot proof and therefore user-oriented. Some linux environments are getting there, but XP is already there. Why edit a config file to use dual monitors? Why use apt-get or synaptic as a middleman, and be limited to only the programs in a repository (no matter how impresive it is.) Why open a terminal, ever? Why can't I use programs that come with my textbooks.

I believe in capitalism. Microsoft is held responsible to users by their money. Open source is holds itself responsible to users (sometimes) out of the goodness of its heart.

Granted, I havent tried very many of the open source operating systems. I've only used...

    Mandrake 10
    Knoppix
    Ubuntu
    Debian Sarge
    Damn Small
    Puppy
    Red Hat 9
    Vector
    Mepis
    FreeBSD
    NetBSD
    Freesbie
    SUSE 9
    Slackware 10
    Feather
    VLOS
    Progeny
Beatrix ...so I've only really scratched the surface.

When software is tailored to hardware by vendors, everydoby wins. If they want to close the source, fine. Open source has its place. The base system on my laptop is not one of those places.

Having said all that, I am no linux hater nor an MS fanboy. I simply like to use microsoft more. This could change in the future. Also, to me, windows would be weak and expensive without OSS such the software TFA discusses. Keep up the good work, hackers.
