I am a Christian and I have no trouble with evolution per se. What I never understood about creationism is that there are two distinct creation stories in the first two chapters of Genesis. No one who takes them literally can explain this to me or which one should be used as literal. The first story begins in chapter 1:
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth....
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
Chapter 2 begins:
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
...but then this:
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,
I am sure creation apologists would explain away the two accounts as not inconsistent, but if the writer meant to convey an account of actual events, wouldn't (s)he have been more careful not to confuse the reader with two separate accounts?
I guess my point is that as a lifelong Christian, I am embarrassed by the creationists who cannot let God play as he likes. I am also baffled by the faith-based evolutionists who cannot explain how the very first living cell came into being (the faith part being this very problem).
My roommate on my last ship (late 80's) was the CO of the embarked Seal team. I cannot imagine him or anyone of his people prostituting their team's reputation. It must be a different Navy today.
I think that it will be some degree worse or better than Vista for Microsoft and users. As a CIO, and from what I have read so far concerning Metro, it will be a *very* long time (until forced to, such as when it is no longer possible to get OEM W7 installed) until we will be upgrading to Metro. To me it sort of resembles Mozilla thumbing it's nose at corporate users. The most curious part about upgrading to a new version of Windows for us is that pretty much the only problems that we face in the process are with older Microsoft products that fail on the new OS.
Looking at the resources consumed on our production database (SQL Server) over the last few minutes... Highest I/O usage: 1 MBps, average is near zero. Nearly all requests are happening in cached memory, and any I/O is to an SSD.
Why is this news? LED bulbs have been available at Home Depot for months. I have purchased more than a few and the least expensive was $17. Costco sells a pack of three for around $20 or so.
This is true, but "report[ing] it to the appropriate military authority" will nearly always land the reporting person in deep doo doo. I know that from experience. A junior person's word against the CO and the system that is designed to protect the CO.
...how many robots would be required? Where is there going to be a fire? Why not just have grenades planted in all likely places with heat-induced detonation?
Having been in the Navy for 14 years and forgetting the ship-board obstacles such as steep ladders, water-tight doors with their high step-over and the like, imagine the Navy red tape involved in:
Training and Personal Qualification System (PQS) sign-off
Repair and maintenance contract
Salt water (most fires involve some attempted dousing involving sea water)
Salt water laden sea air
I really cannot see this would be any help at all in a fire situation. Fires do not wait for robots. They are fast and furious. The fire drill is one of the most intense things that happens on a ship. There is no way that robot twiddle dum would get there on time with the robot operator having to maneuver it from cargo hold #3 to the engine room.... the ship could have been toast by that time.
I am in the technology field. I have an iPad, an iPod and an Android. I use them all (not so much the iPod). But having grown up where there was no TV, no radio, no telephones (except one for the whole community), my POV is that technology like smart phones significantly modifies behavior. People tend to get trained by the technology and lose sight of the practical use cases which in most cases are questionable. For instance, I have seen a group of teenagers sitting together at a table, each one busy texting and no one talking. How many times have you seen someone with a cell phone glued to his ear while attempting to do something else? In my case, I am required to be available pretty much 24/7 and to have access to the servers but the reality is that rarely happens. It annoys me in the extreme when I am having a conversation with someone and their cell phone rings or notifies him/her of a message and the conversation is dropped in favor of the intrusion. The behavior modification is analogous to a dog leash. The main point being: is there often anything so important that it could not wait a few minutes or an hour or a day or more? The portable technology tends to own you
How in the world would this ever *not* be the case?

christy-ind.com: wow, what a *really* *terrible* site...

Regardless of the outcome, defense lawyers used the case effectively to pressure the prosecutor by creating uncertainty.

I doubt any person in charge of fighting such a fire would trust that sealing off the compartments would starve the fire. In the Stark incident, the ship's metal was burning. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/navy/nrtc/14057_ppr_ch4.pdf http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/051805/met_18768709.shtml
Clearly the TSA personnel in this case are ill trained and pedantic, if not stupid.

Attitudes in any company tend to trickle down from the top.
Does anyone see something of the like on the horizon for Windows 8?

Anyone who trots out the Crusades without considering the Muslim purge of nearly the entire Christian population throughout North Africa and around the Mediterranean before the Crusades is a patsy for the Muslim propaganda machine...
