Supposedly, if you have the permissions set correctly on the WordPress files (no, I can't figure it out either, although it did happen once by magic when I used an automated installer), the autoupdater doesn't even need this.

If you have access to your wp-config.php file, you can enable the autoupdater without FTP by adding this line:

    define('FS_METHOD','direct');

WordPress will now update directly without requiring FTP access.

I can attest to this. I've lived in Vancouver most of my life, and while I love this city, my personality shifts completley downwards during the fall & winter here (my doctor reckons it's S.A.D.).

I spent a year living in Australia, and talk about night and day.... a year whole spent feeling upbeat and positive. Then straight back to the same old ways when moving back to Van.

It's a shame, because I'm seriously considering permanently moving to a warmer/brighter climate next year, leaving behind the friends and family. It seems like a huge sacrifice, but man, I just can't hack these winters anymore.

There's a high demand for qualified IT workers in Vancouver at the moment. Someone here suggested skipping the recruiters and applying to corporations directly; I have to strongly disagree with this, especially since you'll be immigrating here. Recruiters are fairly straight forward here, little fuss compared to the Aussie recruiters I had experience with. (And you're right, they won't pay any attention to you until you are actually in the country). I would highly recommend the following recruiters:

    TRS Contract Consulting (www.trscontract.com)

    TEK Systems (http://www.teksystems.ca/locations/Canada/British-Columbia/Vancouver.aspx)

And check out these job sites:

True. However, Vista Business Edition allows you to 'downgrade' your license to Windows XP Pro. So for the corporate environment, you can buy a Vista license, but still legally install XP on it if you so desire.

I can't believe this poorly written post was posted to the front page. C'mon, this is a journal entry at best!

    - The writer spends majority of his 'review' on the fact that he couldn't access Facebook, despite the fact that he admits this was an issue with Facebook's website itself, not Vista.

    - And an embedded link to rentmychest.com? C'mon kdawson, did you even read this submission?

    - He gives his directories names like "Flash-Player-8.5.0.246-beta2.downloaded-2006-03-20-from-labs.macromedia.com"? Is this a joke?

    - He complains about telnet.exe not being available, despite the fact that he doesn't use it normally in the first place?

    - Is this a review of Vista, or an ad for Mechanical Turk?

Has anybody else noticed that Catholicism is quickly becoming the more "accepting/open-minded" branch of Christianity, especially compared to "mainstream Christianity" in the US?

Yes and no. Yes, the Catholic Church has been more science-friendly than many of the southern Baptist-type churches found in the USA. The Catholic Church has readily accepted evolution for many years now (as long as it is taken in the perspective of being part of God's plan).

However, the Church continues to ignore other aspects of science, with grave consequences. Even today, the Church refuses to lift its ban on contraception, and views the use of condoms as immoral. This has dire effects in parts of Africa where the Catholic Church has a stronghold, and AIDS runs rampant.

That, and the fact that they still force priests to abstain from all sexuality (which goes against every natural aspect of human biology, let alone common sense), leaves the Church in a medieval mindset as far as I'm concerned.

Sadly, this kind of harassment isn't confined solely to the USA. I was waiting in line at a take-out restaurant in Galway, Ireland last week, where a 'representative' of the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) came in and began harassing the manager, claiming that it was illegal to be playing a commercial radio station in the restaurant, and that he must buy a license to continue playing music. Now, regardless of the legalities here or whether there was any actual legal bite behind this BPI shill's bark, does the record industry truly believe that it will survive on the euros and cents of small mom-and-pop outlets, such as this restaurant?

My grandmother has no way of knowing she's supposed to be running a firewall, or going to get a Microsoft Security update before doing anything else

See, here's the problem I have with this article, and your statement. It sounds like the BBC installed a version of XP without any service packs or patches (ie: the installed the OS as it was originally released over *5* years ago). Isn't this like saying "Well, we installed a copy of Red Hat 8 as a guest OS and didn't bother to update it... and guess what, it had security vulnerabilities!"

If the article is t trying to simulate a brand new computer being put on the Internet, it losses all credibility. Why? Because all new computers come with Service Pack 2 installed. The Beeb's article complains about pop-ups from the Windows Messenger service. Um, hello? The Messenger service was disabled by default in SP2.

... Until the day Microsoft starts shipping Windows with firewalls INSTALLED and ON by default, articles like this will truly be helpful.

See, that's just it: Microsoft *has* been shipping Windows with the firewall on by default and Automatic Updates on by default since August 2004, when Service Pack 2 was integrated with all new releases! The Beeb's complaints are completely redundant.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm no Microsoft apologist. Until SP2, XP was a security nightmare. I still think that IE 6 was the worst product released by MS in terms of security (my god, the amount of spyware that gets installed because of that program is ridiculous). But c'mon, give credit where it's due. The article's complaints have been addressed since August '04. If someone posted an article on Slashdot complaining about security on an unpatched version of Fedora Core 2, they would be flamed beyond recognition.
