Ah, but TPB already offers the following features:

    1) you can download movies in high res or low res - your choice!
    2) watch them on the TV (Burn to disc and play in your Divx/Xvid-compliant player, now $50)
    3) Burn them to DVD as many times as you like
    4) You can keep the digital copy on your hard drive as long as you want, and it will play on any machine regardless of platform, using open-source codecs and players

In order to compete, legitimate download services (not that TBB is totally illegitimate, I mean, there is public domain and open source material linked from there) need to offer that feature set.

OK, to address the point more directly:

mrshowtime was accused by the esteemed Anonymous Coward (which I referred to as astroturfer) to be stealing, as if depriving someone of belongings.

However, mrshowtime purchased MP3s through a corporate entity which is operating totally in compliance with Russian law. This is aside from mrshowtime's Fair Use right to simply retain backup copies made in accordance with Fair Use.

So, how is the esteemed Anonymous Coward NOT astroturfing for the RIAA, since mrshowtime is going out of his way to replace his music collection without even taking advantage of Fair Use?

I'd argue that mrshowtime may be better off avoiding RIAA materials altogether and buy independent, or listen to classical or talk radio instead, but unfortunately that solution does not work for everyone, due to musical tastes, programming availability, and so forth.

Equating mrshowtime's LEGAL purchases from a corporate entity which is operating LEGALLY to theft of physical goods is not even close to a fair comparison.

So, if I fly, I can go without water and end up with adrenal problems (possibly go into adrenal shock), or I can drive for trips up to 600-900 miles or so and not deal with getting hassled at security checkpoints until I can afford to go for my flight certificate and buy an airplane, and bypass all that bullshit.

Perhaps instead of visiting America and spending your tourist dollars here, you might decide to visit South America or Asia first, or perhaps Canada, and when you do write letters to politicians at the Federal and local levels here explaining that you really wanted to visit America, but cannot in good conscience spend your vacation dollars on a nation which is going backwards rather than forwards where civil and privacy rights are concerned, and you might want to voice your opinion on American-made goods as well. Same thing with soy - I very recently discovered I'm allergic to the stuff and in trying to avoid I've learned:

      - Vegetable oil when listed in ingredients is always "soy" unless otherwise specified
      - Fruits and vegetables in the produce stands are sprayed with soybean oil to extend shelf life
      - Continued exposure to soy can lead to allergic reactions to other legumes, such as peanut butter

Thankfully my allergy is not acute by any means, but it is frightening considering I sought out soy for a number of years as a low-cholesterol source of protein, and now that I'm aware of the allergy I've been examining labels closely, and never realized just how difficult it is to avoid foods containing soy. The worst part is the fresh produce: there is NO indication that it has been sprayed with soybean oil ANYWHERE.

I'm not for banning the stuff (ditto for trans fats such as which found in Oreos, and for high-fructose corn syrup), but I am a proponent of clear labeling.
