Well if the creation story is true then everybody certainly believed in him at one point, when "everybody" (according to Genesis 1-3) was comprised of two people who allegedly knew him personally. If that story is true (I'm a christian but I take Genesis 1-3 as very metaphorical) then indeed "recorded history" does include such a time. However I very much doubt it to be true. Otherwise, if a god does exist and the world was created in 4004 BC as Genesis claims (and if that account is "god-breathed"), then god is a liar due to creating the world in such a way that carbon dating shows the Earth is at least four billion years old and the fossil record indicates life has been around for hundreds of millions of years. I see no logical reason to take the creation story as literal.
Also: CAN can already be interrupted by infotainment systems, since some vehicles have actually used the head unit (the part of the stereo you control) as the CAN bus hub. Idiotic design.
I'd say that if they want the data to be publicly accessible without restriction, they should make the published journals publicly accessible without restriction.

I have yet to see browser-filling popovers with a really puny (x) or [X] button to click in order to see the content * the page resizes sanely with the browser window * the comment box is a reasonable size * it has an almost-perfect amount of white space - easy to skim and speed read on any screen * the news category icons are quirky and amateurish. It somehow makes this site and the brand unique * The moderation system, for all its faults, is one of the best if not the best for this sort of site. Peer moderation is ultimately what made/. what it is.

Old cars had zilch for security. Wanted to take off with it? On really old cars, just cut and twist a few wires, cross two more momentarily, and you're off. Not even a column lock to get in the way.
More recent cars? Hmm, prior to electronic keys (and keys with resistor values, i.e., GM ignition keys), slide-hammer the ignition and use a screwdriver to turn it, or if the column under the dash is acceptable, just pull and jumper a plug, and push a lever to unlock the column. You drive off in the car.
Now cars are more secure than ever. How are they stolen now? Easy: flatbed. It takes just moments, and no one second-guesses a wrecker driver on a public street or parking lot. Or, hacked, if the thief has time and the right tools to do it. It is more difficult than ever to steal and part out a car now, since components more and more often have to be "married" to the ECU/ECM and the key controller (sometimes part of the BCM, sometimes its own computer), and other components in order for them to work - but in order to marry the component (be it an ABS controller, head unit, nav unit, amp, etc.) the old component needs to be "divorced" from the original car.
What does this mean? Car thefts requires a whole lot more sophistication and funding, which leaves it to fewer and fewer players.
In any event, once you have physical access it is game over. Let's stick to locks since they have been keeping honest people honest for years, and security has gotten better than locks, even if the security is through obscurity or merely time.
The bottom line is that readers here are your product, and the readers simply do not like the new beta for a number of reasons, including:
* Moderation (which is part of what makes Slashdot's unique brand so unique) is horribly broken * You are making it look like a slick magazine. Another aspect of Slashdot's unique brand is the image for each story on the front page * View levels is broken - it seems to be highest modded or all, with nothing in between. * the wide, ever-expanding gutters are obnoxious. The story and discussion pages are mostly text; forget the gutters. * You are following a common trend of using far too much white space - we know the site has to include ads and you are trying to make room for them on the page, but what we're happiest with is ads which are subtle (think google's adwords) rather than obnoxious.
regarding ads: many (if not most) of us block that crap because all too often PHBs who decide to include ads somehow think that by getting all up in our face that they'll convince us to buy their product, when in fact the opposite is true; if you try to block the content I am viewing, start blaring loud audio ads when I am checking out the site late at night, or are otherwise rude and obnoxious, we will take note of the advertiser and NOT buy their product. Online ad techniques which might work in broadcast (being obnoxious, loud, etc.) works against you online, because you're getting in the way.
Keep the ads subtle and cut way, way down on the white space.
Also, when checking out tech news we like the content crammed into a small area for easy, rapid skimming

Oh, and the mobile site? Has anyone at Dice even TRIED slashdot on a mobile device? The mobile site simply does not work.

The NSA and CIA are supposed to be about national security, investigating FOREIGN threats (not allies), not blanket surveillance of American citizens and America's allies.
