The governor of MD wrote a letter to Pepco regarding those power outages. As for the snowstorms - its because the DC area historically does not receive snowfall to justify a ROI on snowplows. Instead, they borrow them from the north. Its not like in PA, where if it blizzards overnight, the streets are clear by 6AM so the kids can go to school.
Even machines make mistakes! My wife is a nurse and was recently laid off due to the machine not recording data (blood pressure). She swears she took it (she has bee flawlessly taking blood pressures for years, multiple times a day), but the machine omitted her recording. Maybe it was her fault, maybe it wasn't. The hospital didn't care to investigate. They said it was easier to prove she didn't take it than to investigate the machine. On top of all this, it was after 3 12-hour night shifts and occurred about 6AM in the morning. Either way, it was completely uncalled for. I guess the floor manager shared the same opinion as the parent: nurses should be like machines and machines don't make mistakes?
Unfortunately its a boy who cries wolf scenario. While I agree that we should let evolution run its course on these idiots, I'd hate to see legitimate people in need of rescue die from neglect of rescue operations.
Moral of the story is that science fiction often predicts future technologies - its not promoting the iPad as a Star Trek gadget. However, most techies already know this, so I agree, its not really news worthy of Slashdot.
Google had the good vs evil scale when considering whether or not they should pull out of China. There is no doubt in my mind they have some sort of good vs evil or profit vs privacy scale on some executive's dashboard.
I'm not sure if it was true or not, but I was once told that it has to do with the taste buds of children. They taste differently than adults as a primitive protection against poisonous substances/plants. So, while we beg children to eat their vegetables, at one point in history, that mentality saved them from eating those poisonous mushrooms and whatnot. As a person who struggled with vegetables as a child and now eats them regularly as an adult, I swear there were some vegetables that literally caused me to involuntarily gag, so I believe it on some level. Also, as a sidenote, I find collard greens to be very underrated.
As much as you are kidding, this is the first step. One of the major challenges of flying cars is the driver. The sooner we eliminate the driver out of the equation (partially if not completely), the more likely flying cars become a reality.
Civ is already available on the iPhone and iPad. A watered down, mobile version, but can't really complain for the price (I think I bought mine on sale at 2.99 or so).
*Insert complaints about how businesses bully common folk and how copyright and IP are BS yada yada yada*.
I agree, but the merciless side of me thinks they deserved it just for the fact of their lack of creativity. I am getting sick of all these things that come up with a product and just slap an i in front of it. Seriously, take another 15 minutes and brainstorm a bit longer.
This is an awesome business strategy - with this many Microsoft workers seeing how flawed this device is will hopefully prevent future... ehh who am I kidding... they are there for the paychecks... not to create quality products.
I do this too. To take it a step further, instead of coming up with new passwords when old ones expire, I simply shift things over. For example, you may start out with Il@2202PSt, but when it comes time to change it, I do something like l@2202PStI. The next one might be 202PStIl@2, etc. I recommended this technique to my wife who loves to use pet names. Throw this into her unsafe method of pet names plus important dates and it makes it a lot more secure: uffy1996fl is a pretty decent password.
I'd assume a vast majority of people don't even know what javascript is let alone why it is potentially dangerous. Sometimes you have to consider your users - which sometimes means you have to consider the ignorant, non-technical masses (ie: email users). Sure, you can feed them to the wolves, but it will come back and bite you somehow.
World of Warcraft will eventually kill itself. Its a great game, but its been nearing critical mass for quite some time now. I'd imagine it only has a couple more years left in it before some other MMO will take its place. And I have a gut instinct that it will be Blizzard will be the creator of that new game.
It very well might be a trade off for more job security. From my experiences, private sector may make a bit more at first, but if you work in government, get your clearance, etc, not only will you be matching or surpassing the private sector, but you will have job security far superior than any other market (even health care). Anyone can code Java, but not everyone can code Java and have over $100k invested in them in background checks.
Be careful what you wish for. I worked in a building where the client refused to turn on the lights on a floor that had contractors. That was miserable - especially in the winter when I went to work, it was dark, dark all day long, and went home and it was dark. Green, but miserable.
On a more positive note, they also promoted working remotely which was one of my favorite perks about that place.
Agreed. That is why i don't think its structurally sound. Water/ice will get in between the brick and the lego and cause further erosion. The lego, while probably capable of lasting a long time, will just plop out like a loose tooth. If he would have grouted the area around the lego, adhering the lego to the existing wall, it would have improved the structure's structural integrity and looked cooler as well. Just my 2 cents.
While kinda neat, aren't Legos expensive? I mean, why not just slap some cement/grout/etc on there? It would cost a fraction of the price and be more structurally sound.
The problem with using an open fire is that its plagued with bugs.

Security through software proliferation?
I usually just buy a bunch of magazine subscriptions from door to door salesmen who give sales pitches about formerly being drug addicts.

Austria? Let's throw another shrimp on the Barbie!

Mary had Jesus around the age of 13 or 14, meaning that God had impregnated her around the age of 12 or 13.

I don't want to live in a world where 2 girls and 1 cup isn't readily available to every man, woman and child.

They still have plenty of it considering the budget cut isn't effective for another 3 years or so I believe.
