  1. Not taking as long as it seems: Official on Duke Nukem Forever Teaser Released · · Score: 2, Funny

From the Duke Nukem Forever FAQ: 1.12 - Why is DNF taking so long? While this question constantly comes up from concerned fans, the fact is that the game is not taking as long as it may seem. As stated by several 3D Realms employees numerous times, quality games simply take time. What has been taking the most time is all of the optimizations and additions 3D Realms has been making. In the words of George Broussard, "The fact is that we're not massively delayed. Going to Unreal did set us back, but mainly because we refused to be a TC and not advance tech. We added LOD, skeletal animation, motion capture, and tons of other little enhancements to the Unreal engine to make it more interactive. That all takes time." Level designer Stephen Cole has also commented on this issue: "If DNF was a TC, it would be done by now. Levels, art, models, all are easy and quick to produce. If you want a rehashed TC, that is. If, however, you want something you haven't seen before, it takes time. If you want something that won't be outdated when it comes out, it takes more time." And also some comments by Joe Siegler: "If we had wanted some quickie piece of crap, it would have been out ages ago. It takes time to innovate - it doesn't take any time to shovel any old crap out there. Since we are not a publically held company, we aren't beholden to the same things that some big companies hold their development teams to, hence we can afford to take the time to make a quality product. Besides, once it's released, no one will care how long it took, they'll care that they have a cool fun game."

Where do you get the water that comes out of your taps? Anything beyond that is a luxury. The fact that Aquafina can sell you the same stuff in a bottle is at best a convenience when you're out of the house, at worst, well, there's an excellent episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit that you should watch.

  9. Re:The healthcare market has only one impediment. on Can Technology Fix the Health Care System? · · Score: 1

The reason the health system is crumbling is because anytime we get a conservative government they go on a massive spending spree, leaving the liberals to try and clean up the mess. Health care was just the social programs that took the biggest hit when they tightened the belt and tried to pay off some of that debt. So much of our tax dollars are now wasted on paying off debt. You can see the same things happening in the US.(For the most part) The Republicans go on huge spending sprees, then complain that they can't support the social programs. Then Democrats come in, raise taxes and reduce spending. It's like the Republicans and Conservatives throw a big party, and then the Democrats and Liberals are the hangover afterwards. They're not as much fun, but once things start to recover they get tossed out before they can actually start to make a difference.

Actually, thanks to Prime Minister Cretien, even though I also rarely vote for the winner, I can rest easy that my vote is valued by the party I vote for. Partly out of spite for the guy replacing him, he introduced a law limiting political donations to $1000. A bunch of party funding now comes from the tax system (which I have no problem with) and is based on the number of votes received. As you can imagine, this severely cuts into the fund-raising efforts of parties that were used to getting large donations from 'rich' benefactors, reduces the effect of corporate interests. I wasn't a huge fan of Cretien when he was in office, but sneaking this in before he left made me respect him in a whole new way. Now if we could just get some proportional representation in place, I'd be content with our system.

I think you've missed the entire point of the thread, so much so that in fact, I'm sure you haven't read it. No one's discussing this as a result of IP rights or piracy, this is about the recording industry failing to provide a product that consumers are interested in. This is about the big media companies no longer selling music, but a poor imitation of music. Music sales are down because there is significantly less music now worth owning. It's designed to be played in elevators, and quickly forgotten.
