This is nothing new. I remember seeing a documentary (years ago - can't remember name) where this sort of technology was demonstrated inside cars to cut out engine noise.
It sounds like this machine will also only work on repetetive noise as opposed to it being 'intelligent'. I would be impressed if this machine could cut out random noises (dogs barking, etc) in realtime.
`Hurd' stands for `Hird of Unix-Replacing Daemons'. And, then, `Hird' stands for `Hurd of Interfaces Representing Depth'. We have here, to my knowledge, the first software to be named by a pair of mutually recursive acronyms.
Piri Reis drew an accurate map of the globe way before then
This map was drawn by consulting much more ancient sources, rather than being drawn by Reis himself. Apparently it accurately mapped the coastline of Antarctica which has been completely covered in ice since before the Egyptian Pyramids were built. We know that the mapping of Antarctica's coastline is accurate thanks to seismic surveys that were carried out last century. Spooky eh?
Thanks to your mind-numbingly boring posts I have stopped using MSIE and have begun to use Mozilla as my default browser. I would not have switched browser if it weren't for your posts and I am very happy that I did as I rather like Mozilla. Thank You.
BTW: *OT* is that an advert at the top of this page??? WTF???
Funny you should mention that....the other day I was having a conversation on my cellphone with a friend - he had called me while I was in a store - I left the store and opened my car door to get in. While trying to open the car door with handfulls of shopping and the cell phone wedged under my shoulder, the phone slipped and fell directly through the grates of a drain and into the water below. When I spoke to my friend later he said he heard a splash then muffled, under-water-sounding cries (me swearing loudly). So, I guess it would sound similar to that if someone swallowed a phone! BTW: the phone is supplied by my company, so I got a nice new one:-)
AFAIK unemployment levels in the UK aren't as bad as in the US at the moment. Although the IT industry has taken a bit of a downturn in terms of recruitment recently. I don't think Alan'll have much trouble getting a new job though:-)
Font problems in Mac OS are 99% of the time due to fonts not being written correctly. A font is a piece of software - most fonts you find on designer's Macs are purty ones they downloaded from the internet that were written by other designers, probably using Fontographer, who have absolutely no clue about FOND resources - they just know how to make purty fonts. Put one of these fonts into ATM, Suitcase or even the system fonts folder and you WILL have problems with applications that try to use this font.
This has got absolutely nothing to do with the OS, in fact it has nothing to do with ATM or Quark. If the fonts were written correctly ATM and Quark would not crash.
Mac OS memory management is an entirely different kettle of fish. I agree that the lack of protected memory on mac OSes up to and including 9.x is a pain, but again - if your machine is properly configured this will not cause your machine to crash.
The user made that very comment "Why hasn't it crashed on me?" He used to have crashes all the time. Now he has the other Mac users asking if they can upgrade anytime soon.
Usually the problem with these Computer User Non Technical's is that they tend to install all manner of 'exoctica' on their machines that conflict either with each other or with the OS, this is more often than not the cause of crashes.
I run Linux, W2K, MacOS9.2.2, MacOSX and I work with IRIX. Without exception, if these OSes are correctly installed and configured, they will work correctly - ie they will not 'crash all the time'. I have a Mac running OS9.x at home connected to a file sharing enviornment that I leave running for weeks at a time without any crashes.
The bottom line is: If you have a problem with your OS crashing - TROUBLESHOOT IT! Don't whinge and whine that the OS is crap - IT'S NOT CRAP - IT WORKS! FIX IT!
It's still their fault - how can Google be blamed for others' ineptitude? I wouldn't try and blame someone else if I left the keys in my car's ignition and someone stole it.
If data is 'sekrit'/sensitive/confidential - don't put it on the web. It's as simple as that. If that data is available on the web, search engines can't be blamed for finding it.
This could be awesome for clubbers! There is a lot more to DJing than just keeping beats in-time when mixing. It is a lot harder to 'read' the croud and put on the right tune at the right time, to either build 'em up or chill 'em out.
IMHO, there are only a handful of DJ's who can do this - people like the late Ron Hardy who used to play at The Music Box in Chicago, for example. I might even start going back to clubs if this technology works!
...Linux may well be a threat to M$, but according to this article, a bug in Microsoft's new operating system could lead to actual physical harm of its users.

My bad.....it seems as though someone with nothing better to do has made this page too wide. Thanks for that !
It's almost as annoying as Slashdot's pages not wrapping text properly !

Only if you prefer a chooser menu to a taskbar
Chooser menu? What's that?
or programs that don't close without opening a menu.
command+q
I agree with you....up to a point too ;).

Could searching for your own credit card number also be risky - ie: could it be intercepted?

What about if you write zeros to every block on the disk and repeated the process a few times?
Touche! For those who missed it, here is the iBrator.
