I think its real but it is in desperation..

MS Office makes up a large amount of MS's income with the recent resignation of Offices key executive and just a day after google goes public about contributing actual paid employees into open office it does make you wonder...

This whole www.live.com thing looks nice but two things i dont get is a) the slashdot feed is there (linux users haven) and i saw the netscape logo there too b) its all beta beta beta, MS has a reputation of releasing stuff with a little more substance.

Anyway i cant wait for Googles contribution to OO to take off, then being advertised by Google is going to snap MS back a few notches and i dare say thats what MS is worried about.

The latest Gates Foundation money will target three main areas. The largest chunk -- $107.6 million -- will be devoted to the most advanced experimental malaria vaccine and will cover the completion of testing in Africa and the licensing process, should the vaccine prove viable.

Although spending money in causes such as these is a noble thing to say the least..

The above quote makes me wonder how this "donation" can be considered a part of Research and development. This whole artical seems like it is adgenda motivated (like anything from the news) and it goes on about figures of "how much is spent on research" when most of the money is used for vaccine? It does raise the question what the real modivations are behind all of this?

Testing and Licencing, sounds like a pretty done deal to me.

On a more realistic note, its always the case that different media formats come down to two things, Need and cost. Lets face it a removable harddrive is going to cost significantly more then a plastic disk to mass produce. The thing that works against blue-ray which i dare say will be only a matter of time is the need, at present it may not be needed to utilise the entire 50gig at present but the day will come when something greater then DVD will be required.

Weather it be removal hdd, i see its just a little unrealistic, heck so many factors work agaisnt using hdds as standard removable meida, one of those is the fact they are easily breakable, by dropping and magantisim, Okay yes we can sctrach disks but they still a hell of a lot more durable then a hdd.
