I've thought about making a custom "phone" in the past with GSM modules, but haven't had the time. Telit sells modules that have a builtin Python interpreter. Might make a fun hobby project. Sparkfun used to carry these modules... http://www.telit.com/en/products.php?p_ac=show&p=7/
I'm really loving this attitude that PhDs are not any different from high school drop outs. This is perhaps true for menial tasks. It says something about the posters who tell these stories. Try assigning that high school dropout to do something non-trivial and highly conceptual, and you are mostly likely completely screwed.
It's too hard to decode rot13 text? See ya. Maybe slashdot should post stories in this manner every day to bring up the average reader's technical expertise to the old times's levels.
I saw Henry Kissinger speak in Dallas last week. Kissinger was asked about Nixon's legacy, and he replied that history will see Nixon in a positive light. Kissinger maintains that while Nixon did some stupid things, he will be remembered for his diplomacy wins.
If people in the future have a simplistic view of the past, Nixon's administration could very well be remembered as a success.
National Geographic is conducting the Geno 2.0 study that is tracking human migration patterns based on genetic markers. If you want to participate, you can buy a kit and send in a cheek swab.
The test results include how much Neanderthal DNA you have. Many people of European ancestry have about 2% Neanderthal DNA. So, yes, there was interbreeding, and Neanderthals have not exactly died out.
The trend of dictating what does or does not belong here has come about because slashdot has changed from being a hardcore geeks hangout to a shitty tech blog.
What are the alternatives? I cannot find any comparable tech blogs that aren't dumbed down. Slashdot was never that great, but the SNR was better than average in the early days.
Menial jobs in China are basically indentured servitude with few opportunities for advancement or even opportunities to find out what else is out there. Skipping these jobs, for an educated worker, is totally understandable.

No no- bacon flavor would make it palatable for Americans.
How about an in game bot in the form of a bikini model who will take your pizza order :P
Agree. Ender's Game is the 50 Shades of Gray of adolescent sci fi.
This kind of post proves that provincial people exist everywhere.
I so know what I am doing this weekend!

Sign me up for this supposed hyperinflation disaster. It would be nice to pay off my mortgage with a single $100,000 bill.
Make one? The jammer schematic put out by Lady Ada several years ago was basically a CW transmitter and an amp.

I seriously hope nobody takes financial advice from you.
I had the exact same reaction when I read the headline.
Make sure to store all your pr0n in the cloud..

Cute, but most people are probably incapable of critical thinking anyway. That's never going to change.
What we can do is better develop those with some natural aptitude for it.
Along the same lines, teach kids some formal logic so they have the proper tools to think critically.

Congrats on reproducing.
The target market for this calculator is high school.. How many slashdotters are in high school?
Just curious- did you meet all the listed requirements?

No kidding. I've stopped using ebay too. Haven't missed it at all.
Why not leave him in Thai jail.
Is this the birth of a new slashdot meme we can all love and cherish??
