The Republicans took control of the US senate shortly thereafter. They are less tied to Hollywood than the Democrats, so they did not press these proposals. Now that the Democrats are back in control, the danger is once again higher.
Huh? Isn't it the other way around? I'm not American, but always thought the republicans were more friendly with the MPAA/RIAA... Weren't they who came up with DMCA, too?
I'm still to finish Cryptonomicon, but my biggest complaint isn't the story. It seems I got the mass market paperback edition, featuring 1168 pages of tiny text and lines crunched into each other. What a mess, it is the most unpleasant thing I tried to read... Did they ever heard of readability? It may be ok for smaller books, 200-400 pages, but for anything bigger it's a no, thanks. Stay away from this edition.
For a first examination / diagnosis, you're right, at least in relation to cancer. No matter how good camera pills and MRI get, it will always be worthy to do the traditional exams, as suspicious tissues can be directly taken and polyps removed. However, this might prove adequate for regular check ups - it sure would help many people who have to do one every x years.
We are not talking about individuals, but instead we are discussing organized religion.
The problem is not some people who are religious doing bad things, but some people who happen to be the religious leaders of a group of people doing bad things. By having the power to make decisions and influence their followers, those exact leaders represent their religion. Thus, when making a judgement of a particular religion, we're evaluating the actions took by their highest representatives.
That's why we can't say Islam encourages violence just because some nut blows himself in its name. Yet, if prominent Islamic leaders made a call for violence, then I think it would be perfectly appropriate to label Islam as violent, for as long as those actions continued.
Besides, the parent never said all religions are bad, he was talking specifically about Christianity.
What other systems are out there created in the same context, i.e., with little thought to external interference?
Here's a video of a german teenager messing up with road information panels. Apparently, he got a copy of the software used by authorities to change those displays. It seems that anyone in the possession of that software and a wireless card can do it. Maybe someone who knows german can give more details.
"And what makes it even more ironic is that the activists are still at it today."
Well, that may be changing: here is one of the founders of Greenpeace, Patrick Moore, who changed his views on the subject. Interesting read. And, according to him, there are more changing their opinions:
"British atmospheric scientist James Lovelock, father of the Gaia theory, believes that nuclear energy is the only way to avoid catastrophic climate change. Stewart Brand, founder of the "Whole Earth Catalog," says the environmental movement must embrace nuclear energy to wean ourselves from fossil fuels. On occasion, such opinions have been met with excommunication from the anti-nuclear priesthood: The late British Bishop Hugh Montefiore, founder and director of Friends of the Earth, was forced to resign from the group's board after he wrote a pro-nuclear article in a church newsletter."
I just remembered to check the images for exif data and found that the camera is a Canon EOS 20D. I guess he used a tripod, as some of the pictures have slow shutter speeds, like 1/5... Or is image stabilization that good?
Haha, I have to thank you for that one! I'm portuguese and I had never heard about that book. That surprises me, as portuguese engrish is often satirized by comedians. Herman José, probably the best-known portuguese comedian, has a character totally based on that phenomenon, Lauro Dérmio:
"A film critic [...] who enjoys using English words despite his obvious ignorance of the language, frequently providing literal translations of Portuguese idioms. His mangled English-language catchphrases are Létes luque eta treila ("Let's look at a trailer") and Alueis uátche gude muves ("Always watch good movies")" [from wikipedia]
It is also a nice example of Desenrascanço (formerly in Wikipedia, but it was deleted).
And we have gigantic stuffed dolls and sticks to distract the dogs long enough to get the whaling harpoons trained on them.
And if that fails, we now can have true Duracell rabbits! You know they're all into the 'make love not war' thing, right? By the end of the day, when they're finished, you would have the whole crowd of genetic modified mice, cats and dogs laying on the grass, smoking a joint and singing Beattles' song "All You Need Is Love".
Of course, on the next day the rabbits might come after us...
What ever happened to walking into a quiet library, the smell of stale books, looking around at people. Its slowly being replaced by reading books online and hitting ctrl-w to close annoying popups while you read.
Funny, I bet someone said the same thing when the average person began to have enough purchasing power to buy individual copies of books...
Both 'parties' remotely close to where I live have 2 or 3 people.
Hey, maybe they're all hot girls! Man, that would be sweet. We would then go to party in the jacuzzi in the mansion that I plan to buy tomorrow, as I'm going to play on the lottery tonight and I'm sure I'm gonna win!
Windows 2000 - The greatest operating system MS has made to date.
I have to agree. I don't remember the last time I got bsod or serious errors. It is very stable and fast, even with all the abuse it has received since I did a clean install a couple of years ago.
Vista, though, has given me problems since first time and I got at least 3 bsod after four months of light use...
Huh? The windows were missing, too?

True, in the last conference they gave me a few sheets of paper and a pen!
I just hope they're not giving two different names to the same mission.

The price tag?

Awesome pictures! What camera did you use?

The parent is at least a tiny bit funny and insightful, but flamebait? Lot's of stress around, I see... Maybe because it is monday.
What's the point of buying Viagra if there is no porn? They just got two rabbits with the same stone.

I fail to see how this is better than the already existing self-parking systems...
