8K? I laugh at this. 4K was already enough BS. I just bought two new HD TVs, no need to 4K ever in my home, just like it was with 3D TVs.
Such BS companies do trying to sell you things you don't need.
Just steer away from those and you'll be fine.
I think a new word that should be used when someone is ill-driven when hacking could be simply PHACKING.
"He phacked the system".
"The website was phacked".
Good, right? No need to thank me.
Come to Brazil: my salary is bigger than 80% of the people in this country (considered a Medium salary here, since I am not rich).
But, I get 30 days of paid vacation days per year, PLUS 33% of my salary as a bonus to go on vacation.
I usually split my vacation into two waves of 15 days per year.
Cheers!
This month it's my Three-year anniversary off LinkedIN, Facebook and Instagram.
So glad I am not into these things. There is not such thing as "not private" data. The corporations are AVID for having your "not private" data and fill your soul with Ads.
If you need laptop for regular work: spreadsheets, word processor, internet, File exploring, etc: a more 3:2 format would be welcome.
If you need laptop for video-realted work would make a 16:9/10 laptop ideal.
A 16:9 laptop for regular work, such as the Dell I received from corporate has such high resolution that I have to tune it down to 1360 x 768 so I can properly see everything in the screen. The fonts are SO small it makes no use having such resolution and a 16:9 screen.
Let's reason it.
Linux Desktop lost its chance.
It's easier to appear an Android PC for the desk than Linux take its place. Oops, already did: http://www.jide.com/mini (I just quickly googled something, this was the first result).
No matter how nice, beautiful and functional, people do not want Linux Desktop in their desk.
It's a great OS, I worked and played a lot with it, and also with Solaris, HP-UX, AIX and so on, but Linux won't be in people desks at homes.
I don't give a dang. In march it will be the three-year anniversary since I deleted my account from Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
So I'm pretty happy and still connected in other ways.
"Upon getting a mobile phone which told the time, I happily gave up wearing a watch."
And since, I have been like that. Watches are cumbersome. There are people that wear them for the fashionable content, which does not attract me so there is no reason for wearing a watch, imagine paying big bucks for a thing that goes on your wrist and just doubles what you already have in your phone. Silly.
As for wearables, I don't see yet any real advantages or practical things build or created. I say that without even touching the price subject. Would never pay big bucks for something tech. I never buy cell phones over R$ 1000,00 too (some U$ 300,00).
So, we already got enough tech to fuc.k our brains up. No more needed.
to see what some people say: "I will be there laughing when it crashes".
But I like more the profits I have being making with BTC. In less than a month already recovered my initial investment, took up my dividends and am using to pay for many things around my home. So, for me, it's just great and I invite everyone to get in.
Due to the volatility risks are high and profit is high so it's your decision...
Or you can just laugh like the dude said.:)
...I still manage to stay aside from LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. Left linkedin years ago when the second wave of cracked passwords took them to warn the users. As the spam I received from other members had already fed me up, it was the time to leave.
I may need to use them again, but in the last three years I have no information with them and intend to keep that way.
Information is power...learned that in the BBS-era...in my early twenties, it was the intro phrase for the TERMINATE bbs dialing software. It is the truth more than ever.
Good. I am near three years after deleting my Faceshit account. Do not miss anything there.
Still have a ghost account to access company websites, from those who insist in having presence only in Facebook. And that's it.
"Do you think some company, or individual, should attempt to create their own mobile operating system? "
WHY NOT?
The more options, the better for consumers to choose from, that seems obvious. It does not matter if Firefox or BB didn't hit the mark this time.
We complain about a lot of things here, but not about this subject. Working hours are flexible and I do everything to avoid let work ooze inside my lifetime hours.
Working in IT infrastructure and its service management (whole backoffice, 500+ servers, 6 countries), I usually arrive at 8:30 everyday, have a minimum by law of one hour for lunch (we actually HAVE lunch here, differently from Americans that eat a sandwich in a 15-minute break), come back by 13:00 (we use 24h format here), sometimes 13:30. I can leave at 17:30 completing an 8-hour work journey. So, no worries. Of course, eventually I have to work on saturday nights to follow up on changes the teams are doing but it's not frequent so that does not bother me.
I am old enough to know that, if you work for others, it's not worth it to grind your ass too much. Or to do loads of overtime. I'm well after that time.
Work for living, not the other way around.
If you own your own business, things may be different, but, again, don't sacrifice your family over work. Americans take proud in this shit and, as everybody, they will die alone, so...you know what to do.
What planet is Slashdot on? Silicon Valley's hipster fashion planet?
"Once again" seems like everybody went to the cloud with everything and now it's coming back. That's silly.
Every ducking company I worked for in the last 25 years always stored data on tapes up to today. Nobody ever left anything important in the cloud. To name a few: HSBC, Siemens, Electrolux, Volvo. Right in this moment I am requesting commercial proposals for renewing our library hardware support for the upcoming years.

What the actual phawk? A whole article, and Slashdotted subject such as page numbers? Guys, you should fire this intern. NOW!

This is so weird, this guy here, Knuth, has the same last name as the guy in the last article about The Art Of computer programming and stuff.
Oh yes, your thermostat will get phreaked up, but don't worry, Netflix will keep streaming well!
The link between sex and paywalling would be more accurate.

Silicon Valley, no doubt. Can't wait for the next season.
the ugliest piece of hardware I ever saw.
Oh my. May be very important for the majority, but, wow. What a life changer. Last time I used Instagram was on 2013.

...we don't have eternal life to keep putting up with such bullshit. Technology is already way into our lives. Enough. "Divine AI". Holy cr*p.
And, despite the pleasant visual changes, my tabs now take 3x more time to load. Phuck.

Not very infrequently, I use an image block extension to block the images in websites like the ones reported in the article.

Another excellent reason to be off Facebook. The three year anniversary is to happen soon. : )
