Is that since HP got rid of their NetServer line in place of Compaq's servers, they no longer support Debian GNU/Linux on their servers. Too bad, Debian's our CORPORATE standard, and that was a feather in their cap (IBM has supported us, but unofficially).
Check out IBM's web site for your specific model of Thinkpad. I downloaded their pdf on the 600x's Hardware Maintenance Manual. This gives you step-by-step instructions on taking your Thinkpad apart.
Do a search on Google or Yahoo for some of the web sites that discuss the Thinkpads in depth (I did a brief search, but couldn't turn up the one I found most helpful).
There are different CPU modules and types - they are not all interchangable. Make sure you are upgrading with the correct model. *** Also, use an OS that will put the CPU in idle when not in use. Windows 9x will not, and the CPU will overheat. Windows 2000 and Linux (ones I use) work fine.
PS - I hold no responsibility if you fry yourself and/or your system!
Get an off-lease IBM Thinkpad. I bought a Thinkpad 600x refurbed by IBM, upgraded the hard drive to a 30GB, 5400 rpm IBM HD, and then replaced the stock 650 MHz processor with an 850 MHz. After maxing out the RAM (just over 580MB), this thing cooks!
I keep looking at laptops nowadays, and keeping getting PO'ed at vendors that put a 14" screen in a 15" case. The damn thing looks nice, but is BIG and HEAVY. Then the keyboards on the 12" Sonys looks small. Why don't manufacturers keep making 13" displays???
can I get the James Bond option pack (as seen You Only Live Twice)?? The flamethrower option is nice, but for maximum effect I want the air to air missles!
Check out this site - http://www.braysystems.com/linux/trustees.html We've been using this patch for several months with Samba and Netatalk and have had no problems. Works simply, with no need to mess around patching fsck and other fs programs.
Remember the problems we used to have with the old videogame systems (Atari VCS, Intellivision, Colecovision? Joysticks that had crappy ergonomics or worn out too quickly, having to clean the electrical contacts with a pencil eraser , crappy picture because of the old $2.50 switchboxes...wasn't so bad after all!
Support for SiS chipsets got busted in 3.3.5. Try finding either 3.3.3 or 3.3.4. The release notes for 3.3.6 mention fixes for various chipsets, let's hope SiS was one of these.
I love Debian (been using it for the past year after switching from RedHat), but shouldn't they be concentrating on getting the next 'official' version out rather than adding more platforms? Slink was released back in the February/March timeframe, and it would sure be nice to an official version running the 2.2.x kernel series before 2.4.x comes out.
The unfortunately part of this is that there are packages that have been updated in unstable, but are unusable on an unmodified slink system (slink's dhcpd-beta / unstable's dhcpd comes to mind). While not updated for security risks, it would be nice if I didn't have to update half a dozen packages and move to the 2.2.x kernel just to fix confirmed memory leak problems.
Before the 'unstable is as stable as RedHat' flames start, there have been problems with unstable (the perl problems come to mind). And for those 'well pitch in and help' flamers, I just dropped off my United Way sign-up sheet to HR and made a nice contribution to the Debian project.
Theortical question: Pankaj Chowdhry has just applied for a Linux Sysadmin position at your company. Do you:
a) check the grammer on his resume b) tell him it's not an NT position c) check his reference from a BillG at Microsoft d) kick his sorry ass back to PC Weak e) all of the above
SCO's up against the wall first!
Talk about a wild desktop background!!!
knowing that you bumped lawyers to being #2 on the list to be put up against the wall when the revolution comes??
idiotpc.com??? Not a good name, but I know a few people that qualify buying a PC from them.
Not in any particular orders...

it's not like it's a new release of Debian. Now THAT'S something to get excited about!
