They need to assert control over third party mods to prevent rampant account hijacking. Too many users are installing sketchy addons that steal account information for gold sellers, so "add-on code must be completely visible" is great.

Slashdot villify's Microsoft enough that they don't need to post the common business practices of third parties in the employ of Microsoft. Give us a break kdawson, enough with the sensationalist anti-Microsoft vendetta.

This is very relevant to my interests. We'd tried a while back to compile a Linux kernel with ICC and had too numerous issues to list. We do a lot of work with fluid dynamics and it's ALL CPU based - any increase in speed would be appreciated. With the economy the way it is, and a lot of companies shelving projects, budgeting for new clusters isn't on the list of priorities.

Cut the shit. You and I both know that the majority of people aren't using P2P to download public domain content, linux distros and occasional WoW patching. Out of everyone I know using P2P, and that's a lot, I'm probably one of the few using it for legitimate needs (and I'm also using it for illegitimate needs). I don't stand behind their decision, but honest users that utilize maximum P2P bandwidth are a really small minority.

  12. Re:Do they really want that responsibility? on Quebec ISP To Terminate Subscribers Over Copyright · · Score: 1

Why? That's easy. Users downloading copyrighted materials typically use more bandwidth than regular users, so it's no loss to them if you stop or they cut justifiably (in their eyes) cut you off. I don't agree with it, I'm just suggesting that its their mentality.

My provider refunded me the difference, walked me through disabling roaming (or Home Only option) and told me if I ever did it again I'd have to pay for it.

Microsoft isn't charging extra. The OEM's are charging extra for Windows XP Downgrade which Microsoft allows users and OEM's to install FOR FREE. OEM's have migrated to Vista and don't want to maintain deployment sets, support documentation and drivers for both operating systems so they're charging this extra XP tariff.

As a small OEM, I give my clients the option to go with either Windows XP or Windows Vista, as we sell relatively similar base models so it's easy for us to maintain concurrent deployment sets for both operating systems. This extra charge isn't Microsoft's fault.
