As a male, salaried coder, I have had a lot of anger during the times I have had to pick up slack for a coworker who went on maternity leave. I have worked with a lot of female coders, no matter what the trend is. No other real drama to speak of, outside of the times they are sleeping with the married manager... but the maternity-leave-thing really ticks me off.
I would be a lot more likely to patronize Best Buy if they could do what amazon does for me: make me feel like I am sticking it to The Man by not paying sales tax.
When amazon is finally taxed in my state, MAYBE my shopping habits will change. And, they might not.
I have a modest budget of $X for random silly crap each month... and I always make sure my dollar goes as far as it can go by purchasing on amazon and being patient with free shipping. When a portion of my $X budget has to go to taxes, I will buy less. It's just how things are. There will be fewer Blu-Ray Disks, CDs, video games, whatever, sold and the government will get a little more money to waste.
When energy reactors get small and efficient enough that every American home and African village can have one, we are going to have a big problem with heat pollution.
How about just give them the same technology? They wont need to build more offensive missiles if they have their own method of blocking incoming missiles.... unless their motives are less than honorable.
If we didn't give them the technology, perhaps America's intentions are less than honorable.
The education system in this country worked fine in the past. Why is it such a boggle to look at how things used to be done, observe what has changed, analyze it, and determine when things started going wrong? This solution is so obvious that it seems only an (capital-I) Intellectual could possibly not see it.
I don't think they became criminals because they didn't finish high school. Perhaps they didn't finish high school because they were already inclined to become criminals.
My logic is as sound as theirs.
I don't understand why more people don't do this. If I am at a restaurant or something and get a support call, I just put the phone to my mouth, and cover the entire talking area with my other hand. I can speak low and the soundwaves from my vocal chords get funneled to the phone receiver, my user can hear me loud and clear, and the people at my own table can't even hear what I am saying.
I put cell phone jammer people in the same category as the people who turn off the TVs in the airport with their universal remotes, and the people who buy the little device to disable the seat recline of the person in front of them: Cowardly self-important weasel scumbags pieces of shit.:-D
Yes, Avatar wasn't sci-fi. But then I watched the cut without the alien planet, human hibernation during a multi-year voyage between stars, mind-transfer pods, VTOL aircraft and bombers, battlemech suits, massive, remotely piloted strip mining machines, and alien races and ecosystems. The version I watched was kind of short.;-)
If Apple doesn't want to be held to a higher standard, they should not sell people the impression that they are a higher standard. At least that is what their so-called progressive fanbase would like to believe, who will conveniently ignore the slave labor force that makes their products.
I hate this "all-eggs-in-one-basket" argument for preserving the human race. It misses the point entirely, because in the bigger picture Earth is not a sustainable system. The Sun is getting brighter; in less than a billion years it will be too intense for Earth's oceans to continue to exist. Like Mars did in ages past, Earth is going to lose its water [bbc.co.uk]. On the other side of the balance, Earth's interior is cooling, geological activity is diminishing, and so volcanic replenishment of the atmosphere [wikipedia.org] is slowly winding down.It is clear, at such time scales, that if the entirety of life on Earth is to avoid extinction then life must branch out off the planet. That means launching equipment and people to build massive, robust infrastructure. Crops. Botanical gardens. Zoos.
So..... you're saying that we shouldn't have all of our eggs in one basket?
GoDaddy experienced fallout just from expressing support for the Bill, but which companies/industries are actually buying the politicians introducing the Bill? Surely there is some Christoforo/GoDaddy retribution to be visited upon those entities. It is time to name those names.
Seems to me that when a generation of children is raised with an overly strong sense of entitlement and no manners (which causes a basic lack of empathy and respect for others), you end up with "Occupy" demonstrations.
I CAN HAS UR STUFF?
I think Obama is a horrible President. He seems to have no idea how to implement a lot of high minded, but ultimately poor ideas. He has no idea what to do to improve the lives of average Americans, nor does I think he cares about doing so.
However, if he were to eliminate the TSA, not only would I start flying again, but I'd vote to reelect him in 2012.
I don't have an opinion about Obama's official nationality, because it doesn't matter at all at this point, but for me it was the Dan Rather fiasco and the Bush National Guard forged memo. I remember thinking then, "Well, they won't make the same mistake twice. The next forged document to make republicans look bad will be perfect."
Sony hasn't warned me of anything, and I know they have my correct email address attached to my PSN account. I am getting all of my information from 3rd parties.
That irritates me more than their getting hacked in the first place.
And yes, I canceled the credit card attached to my PSN account yesterday.
"BTW, using a SUV in Paris is a crazy idea, since it's perceived as a lack of respect for other drivers."
And if there is one thing Paris is known for, it's respect for other people.

What about heat?
When energy reactors get small and efficient enough that every American home and African village can have one, we are going to have a big problem with heat pollution.
Or, so an argument could be made.

I thought it was a democratic congress that approved the TSA, and as we now know, it is the fault of whoever runs congress.

Slashdot, and the Internet itself, is serious business. This is hogwash and balderdash, sir, and I'll have none of it. Good day. I SAID GOOD DAY.
If who makes the most money is what decides what is "right," then I guess McDonald's is the best restaurant in America.

Neat pic... neat pic... neat pic... SOLDER APOCALYPSE... neat pic...

Well, it is SORT OF news since it wasn't the TSA stealing, this time.

Balls.
The thing is, we Marines spend a lot of time wishing we had someone around worth beating up.
