Ah, interesting. I've heard rumors that they're ditching Gamebryo for Skyrim... I wonder if it's the same engine as Rage? That would give me even more hope for Rage being a game I'll love.

As glitchy as Gamebryo was, Bethesda did a great job of using it. The game was also so good that I was willing to forgive glitches and crashes.

My mistake. I didn't feel like trying to explain it, and I assumed everyone would know what it was.

That is indeed correct. VATS was an attempt to hold over the strategy aspect of Fallout 1 & 2 while still having a first person shooter-style game.

  3. Bethesda has competition? on Preview of id Software's Rage · · Score: 1

I've played Bethesda's last few games (and the one licensed to a third party, but using their engine) for 200+ hours each.

Rage sounds a lot of like the last couple Fallout games, but without the VATS system. I am SO hoping that's the case... And if they manage to make it even better, I'm going to be in heaven. (I actually like the VATS system, but only use it about 1/3 of the time in combat, so it's not like I'll miss it horribly.)

I'm a little sad that it's coming out only a month before Skyrim, though. If I get 200+ hours from it, that'll mean that both games are competing for my attention at some point.

I'd argue against that because most people do not save money. They spend everything they have. If they save $50 on an image editor, that money doesn't go in the bank... It goes to buy something else.

It doesn't restrict the flow or money at all... It only changes which company gets it.

Nintendo released the DSi and it flopped. There were no games for it!

A year later, they release the 3DS, and guess what? NO GAMES! The launch titles sucked. 3D Sudoku? Really!?

Even now, there are only a few decent games, most of which fail to really benefit from 3D, and don't use the extra features of the device.

The price point is not the problem. They launched it too early, before enough games were ready to show it off. Even now, people continue to make DS games and largely ignore the 3DS.

So yes, Nintendo should worry about that. But worrying about smartphones is silly.

When phones start having good gaming buttons and analog sticks, then I'll agree that Nintendo needs to worry. The current options for action/rpg game control on phones are horrible. I have yet to find one I can stand to play for more than 5 minutes. Even ones that -should- be good games... I just can't deal with the sloppy controls.

And there's a difference in length and quality between $1 cellphone games and $40 DS games as well. You expect something different from them.

You may very well be correct. That has certainly been a trend lately in games. But there are still some that continue the old tradition of providing a LOT of playtime, if you want.

In Bethesda's case, they only put out a game every few years... So if you play the game for 250+ hours like I do, it doesn't bother them a bit. In fact, with DLC, it gives them a chance to keep you paying.
