    Very good points.

Admittedly, my example of copying a cd wasn't the best. I used that because the Sony rootkit debacle had sprung to mind. A better would have been:

"If your iPod dies and you decide to buy something else (I know, heresy, right?), the content distributors feel you should buy all the music that you've already purchased from iTunes again from somewhere else in a format that your new player supports. Imagine having to purchase all new dvd's every time you replaced your dvd player."

That explains the problem. Explain what DRM is.

When I'm explaining, the first thing I do is correct the one thing may think they know about DRM.

    DRM is not about piracy.

We have always been better at breaking things than making them, and DRM protections are no different. What DRM is about is maximizing profits. The cartel wants you to pay as many times as possible for the same product, so they want you to pay for every format you use. To them, when you rip a cd you bought to mp3 and play it on your DAP, you are cheating them since you didn't pay again for that right.

The other is that yes, the very existence of government leads to an immoral government over time, simply because it is a bureaucracy, and that's what bureaucracies do. They consolidate and preserve power.

And this is exactly why the forefathers included the 2nd Amendment. The explicit purpose of keeping "a well regulated militia" and preserving "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" was to keep the government in check with the threat of being overthrown by the people should the need arise. Thomas Jefferson estimated that this should probably happen about once every 20 years.

In a few years we will remember these discussions and smile...no new O/S comes out without problems...especially one that is rewritten from scratch and has fundamental changes like Vista.

Now I'll admit that I held the "Why go to XP when 2K does everything I need?" attitude for quite a while. But the arguments bashing XP back then never mentioned DRM that intentionally degraded the quality of or completely prevented the use of your own media, removal of hardware accelerated sound and EAX, and UAC to name a few. And did I say draconian DRM?

And as for "rewritten from scratch", you unfortunately are mistaken. For an example of biting the bullet and completely rewriting an OS that really needed it, google "Mac OS9 OSX". Vista has all the problems of a complete rewrite (app breakage, basic admin tasks completely changed) without the benefits (still insecure and inefficient).

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go to apple.com and rub one out.

I just don't have time to play the anti-virus/rootkit/malware game, so my XP box (for games) never has and never will see the internet. I never got into online gaming due in large part to that. All my browsing, email, downloads, etc are done on my Powerbook.

And the more I read about Vista, the more it seems that XP will be that last Windows I ever buy. Hopefully in a couple of years when I'm buying my first Apple pc their gaming situation will have improved.
