If the code was written to let the remaining cars out and just not park any new ones, this wouldn't have made the news. Don't overcomplicate this with open source. This is just bad PR.
I used to work with a guy who for fun would memorize barcodes. He even informed Crest or Colgate of an error in one of their barcodes and got a big stack of coupons.
of course, we just called him crazy. I guess we should have called him visionary.

You say college crack whore like it's a bad thing.
How about links to the study reports? I'll let you read them yourself and decide how you would like to interpret the results. No chance it's been "spun" by the media. clicking on the links will open a PDF.
SGI was addicted to selling $80K workstations in small numbers, and PCs running 3D Studio Max that could be configured for a bit over $10K just overran them. SGI refused to adapt. Because of their overhead, perhaps it was impossible for SGI to adapt. So SGI was in a marketplace where a 3D workstation could only fetch $10K (and falling), with a business model and overhead (like owning your own CPU designer, writing your own OS) that made it impossible for them to compete.
About 7 years ago, the company I worked for tried to buy an SGI. I forget which one it was exactly but it was about a $40k machine. There we were, money in hand and SGI told us we would have to wait about 6 months to take delivery of it. that didn't fly with management. We ended up buying 2 gateway servers for half the money and ran redhat on both of them. I knew right then that they were doomed.
I personally think that while states might lose money, it actually helps overall economy. If people have to pay a few dollars less and not pay tax on an item (especially higher priced ones), they are more likely to purchase the item.
Not to mention that said item comes to my house via a UPS truck, which is already paying the hefty state gasoline tax, title and tag fees for their large fleet of vehicles, and whatever state taxes on a corporation are. Seems a lot like killing the goose that lays the golden egg
at the end of the day, I'll still buy stuff online unless it gets taxed at a rate that makes it uncompetitive, because I loath going to the mall.
My opinion is that people in the US should bite more to defend their freedoms there. I mean, I know about a statistic that says about only half the voting population actually votes? Distressing...
and I don't think it's that high a percentage. Its because there are 2 prevailing attitudes:
1)you can only vote for somebody in one of the 2 major parties or else you are "throwing away your vote"
2)you've got to be a real shitbag to climb to the top of the pile in either one of the 2 major parties.
true or not, if you believe those 2 things, then the question really does become "Why go out and vote"? Why use your valueable time to go voice a preference for a person who repulses you.
for the record, I voted in the last election. But not for anyone who was going to get elected.
training classes never cover what you really need, how to put out fires.(well, unless you are in firefighting school, but I digress) When a server is down, you have to find the problem NOW, not tomorrow. If you've been to training, your boss will probably, and in some senses, reasonably expect that since he/she has shelled out good money to have you trained, you are now an expert on that subject. If you've been to training, you will look very bad when it takes longer to fix a problem than the boss expects it should take a "trained professional."
on the other hand, when the untrained IT geek solves the problem through their own wits and resources, they look very good. Even if they take too long to solve the problem, they have the "I wasn't provided training" excuse to fall back on.
It's not about maximizing your chance of success, it's about maximizing your chance of being perceived as a success by your boss.
is it a shitty attiude? yes. but remember that no matter who signs your paycheck, you are always working for yourself.
Of course, I don't think we can yet predict stock prices with the same 81% accuracy as in this article. And, if anyone could, they would be wise to keep it to themselves.
quite the opposite.
If I advertised a program that predicted stock pices with 81% accuracy, a very large number of people would buy/sell based on it's results, making it self predicting. at least in the short term.
Because i still get all my porn from newsgroups. no popups, easy to spot trolls, no need to bother hacking into porn websites, and if you throw out the cost of internet access, which I'd be paying for anyhow, completely free.
At any rate, I see trying to eliminate porn on the internet, as killing the goose that laid the golden egg. without the adult industry opening up and running sucessful businesses on the internet, it'd probaly still be the domain of the geeky. basicly all slashdot stuff. not saying that is a bad thing......

it's a shame, I loved those machines.

Flame off and Flame on are both owned by Marvel comics. Please cease and desist from using these terms in your future posts.

We have an "Electron cloud award" at work. the current holder of the award is responsable for catching the next recipient.
