This is absolutely rediculous! Hum last I heard jaywalking is still illegal, and can you name one person in your lifetime that was EVER arrested, hell cited, for it? Probably not. I know many many many places in the 48 states still have anti-black/Jim Crowe style laws on the books, but because of changing times are unenforcable, even thought they are still technically law.
Um we funded the mujahadeen, not the Taliban. (I could be wrong, just sayig from the first half of your comment.)
P
Secondly, Osama Bin Laden, the more I have seen about him over the years, makes me feel even more strongly he is simply a media campaign, putting a name on the face of terrorism in general. The only way we will catch him is to make someone into him, drag him in front of a camera crew and claim victory, which will never happen. We have the best military in the world, if he really existed, there is no reason why our military would not have extracted him already, seriously.
Of course, and lets remember now 10 companies that came out of AT&T's monopoloy are now bigger then that monopoly ever was. How is their image ruined? Seriously? I am not a major MS product user or supporter, yet all the lawsuit told me was that they know how to market. XBox is not going to fail if you know *anything* about the video game market. XP is going to have some issues, but by in large, NT was slow to take off, as was Me, but now they are everywhere. Define no longer what it used to be? I can agree on a superficial front, and even from a technology side, but I think you meant behemoth of industry, and to that I say you are *completely* wrong. Last I checked MS has even MORE desktop market share then it had before. The percentages are different with Linux et al adding to their camps, but there are so many more desktops out there that MS has even more then before.
Um money has nothing to do with it, and of course being open source and apparently not for much profit, they never will be billionaires. However, even the almost lowest common denomiator can set up some back up somewhere else. Hell, my bro's apartments servers have backups at another friends house. Its called being lazy and unresourceful.
M$ audited them for licenses and they didn't have enough, just like every company in the world that usese M$. So they made them a deal they couldn't refuse:)
Actually I cancelled my subscription as well. I used to love Wired, even when they were way off base, however the CueCat was too much. Its ok they have been downhill majorly since the Y2K issue anyway.
I second this. I remember Oregon Trail like it was yesterday. Interfaces haven't radically changed in years, maybe throwing them on Trash 80's and C64's will teach them how to be operators in larger computer rooms where they have large arachic equipment and textual interfaces:)
Don't. I spent 70 on mine, because I am a game freak, sigh. And to this day I have yet to use it once. Never even hooked it up. It was to much of a hassle to do PSO so I never even got it. I love Sega, love the DC, can't wait till you can upload bootloaders via the adaptor, but till then, no point. Sorry to burst your bubble. If you can get it cheap and hold onto it for the future, then by all means:)
No you wouldn't because then they would have nothing to emulate:) Seriously, seems the goal lately of most unix development is to emulate what MS is already doing, but in a supposedly more stable manner. I run linux, 98se, os9 and X, etc, and I am sorry, between all the them, the linux stuff while serving its purpose, is just well, not revolutionary.
Anyway, M$ is a business, and they are damn good at the business they do. I think if the Open Source companies stop emulating the code and at least made some semblence of emulating a successful non-.com business, they would be much better off.
I can't believe you guys are still concerned about the business dealings of M$. I am not going to sit here and bitch about them, or AOL, etc. Why? Because my bitching does no good. Instead, I customize my system the way I want. Yes I run 98 SE (the best desktop OS in terms of overal, for me that is, games, IE, etc), but I run Linux, Mac OS ancient through OSX, Solaris, etc. Never has it mattered what is packaged with a system, ever. If I want something else, download it, or create your own! If you took the time it takes all the/. crowd to sit and bitch about M$ this and that, you could have saved the world by now! Well not really, but you get my point. And to counter the already coming "Its not the choir, its the non-computer literate users who choice is stifled." Whatever, you think they give a damn whether its Mozilla, Netscape, IE, etc? No, they just want something that gets the job done, period.
And sorry, from a technical standpoint, IE is king of the browswer world right now. I recently go the latest Opera, and I *really* like it, but it does have some issues, but its well on its way. Netscape has sucked the past 3 years. Lynx is great for what it is (but I am hardly on a unix console anymore, so no reason to go text only in the land of Fat Pipes (tm)).
Anyway, less bitching, more coding. If you don't like it, go fix it. Seriously, all huge companies have to start somewhere, go create a software juggernaut that can fight these bad boys. Upstarts win in the end, but like science vs. the Church, it takes hundreds of years. So why fight the system as a hacking punk when you can do it much better as a businessman on their terms?

I am not bragging about my academic prowess, but as long as I can remember, people wanted to borrow my notes, copy my homework, etc. Moreso in high school and previous years, but it happened quite often in college as well.
Granted it sucks when cheaters do well and get through will much less effort then yourself, but look at it this way, it will catch up with them in the end, one way or the other. I got enough things to worry about instead of torching others academic careers.
Actually they have so much money, they are changing their financial plans, and buying back common stock and trying to invest in other assets. 6.4 Billion (US) in cash in the bank is a lot of money. Nintendo can actually afford to miss this generation if its truly looking bad, because one thing people seem to forget about Nintendo, they have the Gameboy advance, which is going to make them so much money they won't know what to do with it!
I am saying this half jokingly, but could the video game companies sue the parents and lawyers for slander? They do not go around saying how their bad parenting was responsible do they?

Actually that is not what they are saying. Lets not think of this in terms of life for a moment as in souls. Rather, realize the human body is just a system, that has almost endless ways to have things change (in terms of health and appearce) or just go wrong (disease). The system grows thanks to its ability to absorb nutrients from consumption. I am not trying to belittle humans here, but really, as a matter of infinite complexity, we could surely view our bodies an infinite number of ways, but that does not change the fact we are compose of a limiited number of systems with a limited amount of variation (even though its considered substantial, mainly because we don't know what correspondes to what, genetically speaking yet on a whole.)
I disagree with the arugment here. Your points are valid, but you missed his argument I think. Radio does suck now. There is no loyalty to DJ's or stations. I feel every hour now is half ad's and half music, a ratio that is to disparate to maintain interest. I am not saying their are not good DJ's or good radio stations out there, but this single format, play the same 10 songs and add 1 from 10 years ago every three hours shit has to go. And that witty DJ banter is so lame it hurts!
True they do, however, what I never understood was why do companies wire the hard way? If you are going to be wiring and rewiring, build excellent infastructure like wide conduit, so you can have small bots simply pull out the old lines and lay the new ones whenever you need to upgrade (or repair). Save a lot of money in the long run.
I completely agree, Katz is out of his league here. P2P now is what hacker has become, a catch all for many things. Something like SETI@Home is NOT a true P2P app. Granted it makes communique between to apps, however, that does not mean p2p unless you only mean that context. Of course we all know SETI is a distributed app. Hell you could say the heart needs blood (tcp/ip), the brain needs it too, so that makes that system p2p? I think not. Its just symatics. However, I really wish for once the tech world and the journalistic world could just use the same definition.
I was almost beginning to think that no one else in the world sharded this view. I so agree with this man, mod him the hell up more! Seriously 99% of end user applications (not including games as its a fad item and newer games push newer hardware) don't need anything more then a Pentium or Pentium II. Wonder if there is a way to optomize hardware to work around certain "types" of apps, like office suites. I know that question is a little odd, but really, most software is the same, but modern games in no way relate to the function of most say word processors...probably could make a killing if you could offer such systems to business, "Your business apps will run []% faster and be []% more stable then a generic computer, etc."
You are completely right. My Tae Kwon Do teacher told me years ago that if you ever have to fight a gang of people, you only need to worry about the couple worse ones, as those are the only ones you will end up fighting. I used to date this girl, who I asked when we first met what she liked to do, and she said protest. I said what, and then she was like I want to be an activist. I am like name one cause you are really into. And she mentioned something nonsensicle that just had a rally the day before on campus. It amazes me what these coffee houser/punk type people will pull off in the name of activism.
Alright, it just hurts me to see so many people discussing arcades as a thing of the past. Granted they are not as prevelant as before, because manufacturers have been steadily increasing prices of the units to the point that its not uncommon for non-deluxe games to cost 75 cents a time to play, and that is just ridiculous.
There are many reasons why arcades (hopefully) will not die out. As mentioned by several people, its a social experience, they get to show off in front of their comrades and even more importantly strangers. They are a place to hang out that just about anyone can afford to go to and have some fun.
That latter point is important. MANY people go to the arcade for instant gratification. An arcade machine is not the same experience as my home gaming setup, never will be. Being able to walk between classes to the Kentucky Arcade (I go to UK), and chill with people I know, talk to the cool owner, kick some ass before my next class, can not be matched by going home to my home theater monitor, Dreamcast, and Soul Caliber, no matter how good that is in its own environment.
Thats not exactly true, the old napster is true and even the VP of Bertlesman (sp) said that the old one would remain free, rather Napster is creating a new Nap-type network that is for pay.
I refuse to give the cable service battle up myself, but @Home's technical ability is absolutely rediculous, and like most tech service companies their customer help is sub-par to well, I can't think of a good example right now. Anyway, I haven't had so much problems with the DNS servers, but their email servers my god, could they mess up anymore? From not being able to deliever, to bouncing lists I am on, to resending the same email I deleted one day for days on end, its crazy! I wish I knew of a class action suit going on, I would be there asap.
You know, with all these Seti@Home clients churning away, could the bulk EMF from the computers be interpreted as a sign of intelligent life from Earth to the Aliens?
