Bot hunting makes for entertaining pew-pew, but corporate intrigue was my favorite activity. Before I retired we were pulling off Carmen Sandiego scale heists. More than one space station along with all of the trimmings vanished without a trace.
This is why I read down before I reply. You beat me to it. From the full image height spike and what appear to be after-images at regular intervals I would say you are dead on. The CCD went WAY beyond saturation for that moment. Not a lens flare, but still very impressive.

Repeat your process you just outlined, but instead of pressing the button, pretend to press the button. Just go through the motion without actually pressing it.

The one thing I do like about Gottliebs from the solid state era is their choice of connector for the interconnects. The rest of the industry's choice of the 0.168 and 0.1 tension pins will plague us for all of eternity.

Back EMF is a recurring issue on several modern Stern designs; due to things like poor wire routing choices and underspec'ing diodes on larger coils.
