  1. Re:The ADA pushes too hard on ADA May Force Netflix To Provide Closed Captioning On Content · · Score: 1
I actually like that idea. Rewards for doing the right thing. But...

Do you give them a reward for providing sound so people who can hear have no issues watching the movie? You know, they give out refunds if the movie plays without sound... Do I ever get a refund if the RW or Open Captioning advertised doesn't play? No.

  2. Yee haw! on ADA May Force Netflix To Provide Closed Captioning On Content · · Score: 1

As a deaf American, I am happy this is happening. It makes Netflix useful, and I'd like to see it expand to all online video. What excuse do CNN or Fox news online have NOT to captioning the video on their websites? Not a single one.

As an American businessman, I can understand what a collosal pain in the ass it is for business... but it's not the fault of ME or any other deaf person that Netflix chose to ignore us.

Would you use Netflix if all the movies and shows had no sound? Course not. There's no excuse not to have closed captioning, not from a technical stand point at least. Almost all original video has captioning enclosed nowadays. ALL broadcasts in the US are required to have closed captioning. Claiming they don't have access to the captioning is horse feces.

The bigger issue is the LICENSING costs, I believe. Captioning is often treated as a separate performance from the primary material. This, I believe, its also horse feces. Is the sound a separate performance from the video? No, it goes together to produce the performance.

I'd also like to see it expanded to the movie theaters, where a deaf person is often treated like a fool for asking if a movie has captioning... and having to seek out 2nd or 3rd run options, when there is plentiful technology to present this without issues (Rear Window, specifically) with other movie goers.

Again, I understand this costs money, but... if you did it in the first place, it wouldn't be an issue, would it? Or should be all be watching silent movies still?

  3. Long Time Hearing Aid Wearer on Ask Slashdot: Why Are Hearing Aids So Expensive? · · Score: 1

I wish I could answer this question for you, but I cannot. Hearing aids have always been expensive. I have worn hearing aids since I was in first grade. I just purchased 1 new hearing aid which cost over $1500. I have worn about 8 pairs of hearing aids in the last 35 years. They last on average between 4 to 5 years before they cost too much to repair OR they simply cannot be repaired adequately. I suspect that the level of hearing loss adversely affects the price. The supply/demand issue DOES affect it. Few people are in the range of needing the super powerful, digital hearing aids with Bluetooth and all the listening addons. Personally, my hearing is atrocious, and I've actually suffered a secondary collapse in hearing, pushing me into the likelihood of Cochlear Implants instead of a hearing aid in the near future. The more important question is: Why doesn't health insurance cover hearing aids? But it WILL cover a cochlear implant, which costs 4 to 10 times as much?

  4. Point Missed on Why Do All Movie Tickets Cost the Same? · · Score: 1

When you go to the movies, you're not paying to see the movie: you're paying for the right to walk into the theater. You simply buy a ticket that says "I'm going to see Mission: Impossible".

Every cineplex in my area now, you can buy a ticket for ANY movie you want and then walk into any other movie they're showing on their 20+ screens. This is why the price is the same for "Mission Impossible" and "Generic Indie Flick 12".

It's also why it's idiotic to pay extra for IMAX/3D movies. Show up for the Indie flick, walk in the IMAX flick. They never check tickets at the door to each screen anymore (because that requires STAFF!)

Netflix having so many customers demonstrates a viable business model. One that has more or less destroyed the Blockbuster empire. I would have no problem with being a Netflix customer myself, except that Netflix still demonstrates they have no desire for DEAF customers. They insist on pretending that Closed Captioning is an arcane and difficult technology to implement.

So, while I applaud Netflix for their massive customer base, I do NOT welcome these Netflix overlords, because they insist on treating me as a second class citizen. Shape up, Netflix!

  13. Re:libraries on $39.5 Million Hi-Tech Library Opens In Illinois · · Score: 5, Informative
As one who works in a library, my response is more than likely to be prejudiced...

Part of why we need libraries is a total failure of informational literacy. Many of the people we see today have no clue how to tell the difference between REAL and NOT REAL (hence, people who think World News Digest or Fox News are "real": they lack the skill set to determine what information has value and what does not.)

Libraries are also tremendous community and learning centers. We're really the center of democracy and freedom. We aid the local schools, the senior centers, the youth assistance groups, and provide training and access to job searching. A community without a Library is a community without a heart: it will wither, suffer and die.

Maybe one day a level of informational literacy will exist. Maybe one day it'll be taught in schools, from Pre-School through College/University. That day is not today, and not likely in this century. Modern Librarians are experts on finding information, and making sure it's good information.

I mean, why the heck would a scrap yard accept X feet of copper wire if he shows up in his pickup? For all the press on this issue (and there's a lot of it here in Detroit), there's never any real discussion of fining or doing ANYTHING to discourage the metal buyers from accepting obviously stolen materials. Until such steps are taken (i.e. real penalties for accepting stolen cable, pipes, etc), then any licensing isn't going to much help, is it?

Internet filtering is a false promise. It provides a false sense of security: no one will be able to look at naked women and Goats.cx with filtering on. Its a business function completely based upon a false premise.
Many tools exist that even kids can understand to bypass filtering. For example, Circumventor. Totally simple way to bypass lots of security filters. URL obfuscation. Sites exist to HELP you obfuscate URLs.
In the vein of the article... assuming you MUST use filtering (and many libraries must in order to get state/federal funding... ) its entirely correct: the decision on what is obscene and what is not should not be made by a system admin or more specifically, by a software developer who may exist in a completely different community with entirely different views on what is obscene and what is not.
Oh, and I AM thinking of the children. I don't want my kids growing up to be afraid of swear words, naked people, or other obscenities, and retreating from society to hide in a Pakistan cave... Technology cannot cure society ills. At least not until we can effectively erase free will and turn everyone into automatons...

  21. Always been expensive... on Why Are Digital Hearing Aids So Expensive? · · Score: 1

I asked this question myself once. I was told: Supply and Demand. There aren't that many deaf people, per se. At least not at my level. (I require amplification at 120db in the "low to mid range frequencies with no high frequency capability", so yes, I'm essentially deaf.) My current BTE pair cost me $2400 EACH. I was given a $1,000 discount as a repeat buyer, so I still paid $4000 for a pair in 2007... $1200 would be cheap. I'm not really happy with the digital quality, either. These aren't high end in detail or capability, only high end in amplification. (Phonak Supero +). Since the purchase, I've completely lost hearing in my left ear... furthering the monetary wastage. I should get, maybe, another hearing aid for my right ear next year... Will obviously go Analog as the price on a single analog in my range is only $650. Taken into perspective: my hearing began to fade around 1980. The first pair of BTE's my parents bought cost $1,000 each (analog, obviously)... so this is not a sudden thing. Hearing Aids have always been very expensive, and are almost NEVER covered in any fashion by health insurance. YET... Health Insurance would have paid for a full dual Cochlear implantation that costs over $50,000 (except Cochlear implants do nothing when your auditory nerve is toast). THAT is even more ridiculous IMHO.
