  1. Don't worry. on Behind China's Great Firewall · · Score: 1, Insightful

I really think that they feel they have a reason to censor the net for places where most foreigners are going to be hanging out during the Olympics. Most of those places aren't going to have your average Chinese citizen just looking for a way to get around the firewall.

The government cares about their 'face' and they aren't going to want to the rest of the world seeing what they do control. They'll just let those places have access and then after the Olympics, restrict it again.

  2. How it works. on Behind China's Great Firewall · · Score: 4, Informative

In America, the Internet was originally designed to be free of choke points, so that each packet of information could be routed quickly around any temporary obstruction. In China, the Internet came with choke points built in. Even now, virtually all Internet contact between China and the rest of the world is routed through a very small number of fiber-optic cables that enter the country at one of three points: the Beijing-Qingdao-Tianjin area in the north, where cables come in from Japan; Shanghai on the central coast, where they also come from Japan; and Guangzhou in the south, where they come from Hong Kong. (A few places in China have Internet service via satellite, but that is both expensive and slow. Other lines run across Central Asia to Russia but carry little traffic.) In late 2006, Internet users in China were reminded just how important these choke points are when a seabed earthquake near Taiwan cut some major cables serving the country. It took months before international transmissions to and from most of China regained even their pre-quake speed, such as it was.

Thus Chinese authorities can easily do something that would be harder in most developed countries: physically monitor all traffic into or out of the country. They do so by installing at each of these few 'international gateways' a device called a 'tapper' or 'network sniffer,' which can mirror every packet of data going in or out. This involves mirroring in both a figurative and a literal sense. 'Mirroring' is the term for normal copying or backup operations, and in this case real though extremely small mirrors are employed. Information travels along fiber-optic cables as little pulses of light, and as these travel through the Chinese gateway routers, numerous tiny mirrors bounce reflections of them to a separate set of 'Golden Shield' computers. Here the term's creepiness is appropriate. As the other routers and servers (short for file servers, which are essentially very large-capacity computers) that make up the Internet do their best to get the packet where it's supposed to go, China's own surveillance computers are looking over the same information to see whether it should be stopped.

Think again of the real importance of the Great Firewall. Does the Chinese government really care if a citizen can look up the Tiananmen Square entry on Wikipedia? Of course not. Anyone who wants that information will get it-by using a proxy server or VPN, by e-mailing to a friend overseas, even by looking at the surprisingly broad array of foreign magazines that arrive, uncensored, in Chinese public libraries.

What the government cares about is making the quest for information just enough of a nuisance that people generally won't bother. Most Chinese people, like most Americans, are interested mainly in their own country. All around them is more information about China and things Chinese than they could possibly take in. The newsstands are bulging with papers and countless glossy magazines. The bookstores are big, well stocked, and full of patrons, and so are the public libraries. Video stores, with pirated versions of anything. Lots of TV channels. And of course the Internet, where sites in Chinese and about China constantly proliferate. When this much is available inside the Great Firewall, why go to the expense and bother, or incur the possible risk, of trying to look outside?

All the technology employed by the Golden Shield, all the marvelous mirrors that help build the Great Firewallâ"these and other modern achievements matter mainly for an old-fashioned and pre-technological reason. By making the search for external information a nuisance, they drive Chinese people back to an environment in which familiar tools of social control come into play.
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200803/chinese-firewall So they are going to let certain IPs get anything they want. So it won't even seem like there is a 'Golden Shield' to most foreigners that visit China for the Olympics.

I'm sure if it were the other way around people all over the globe would be using Chinese as the International language. But the fact remains, they stopped exploring, that was their downfall.

Yes, I agree with your points, there is Chinese culture everywhere, but it hadn't become so widespread say, 100 years ago as it is today. While there were still places in the world to colonize, Western civilization was at its peak. The Chinese Empire pretty much put a stop to colonization to pursue National Interests.

Speaking of which, The Chinese don't have as much Nationalism as say an American does. I've seen this first hand. Since Western culture was able to spread nearly everywhere it made it easier for the entire world to accept Western culture. If you look even in the places that hate us the most, their lives are still affected by Western culture at least a little everyday. Now the Chinese are rising as an economic power house and will probably overtake the US say within the next 50 years. But the American culture will still live on, not just American culture but Western culture. The nice thing about Western culture is that we take aspects from other culture and adapt it to our own.
Most restaurants in the US that are Chinese don't serve real Chinese food. It's American Chinese food, not the stuff your mother would make, but not the stuff my mother in law would make either. (She's Chinese) If she ate at an American Chinese restaurant she would probably call it American food.

Back to the point. Now I'm sure that the Chinese would have ruled the world if it wasn't for the little fact that they closed in on themselves. They completely turned their back on the world for pursuit of what? National Interests, well a few bad rulers took care of that. Now since the way world is connected today, the Chinese people can't keep much to themselves anymore. Sure they try, look at Tiananmen Square, they tried their hardest to keep that a secret, did a pretty good job with their own people, too bad there was a Western reporter there at the time. The Chinese feel that it's best to keep things out of the public eye, the complete opposite of Western culture, absolutely everything reported on. Alright, well it's late, I'm ranting, just wanted to make a few points to show what has caused the rapid expansion of Western culture compared to Eastern.

Like my mother always said "It doesn't matter where you start, it matters where you end up." This being the point of my whole argument.

The fact is that European culture -Western culture- has spread so much across this globe that it doesn't matter if we were all once black, white, or Asian. Europeans did a good thing to the world by introducing diseases that killed nearly all of the native population that the came in contact with. Yay small pox! Now lets see, the Chinese develop gun powder, and then use it for what??? Oh yeah fireworks, it took the Europeans to first think of a way to use this for killing people. Hmm, maybe China has started to learn something, look at their current political stance. "Let's try to run the world, since we fucked it up 50,000 years ago."

I've lived in Asia for about the past 2 1/2 years now, and have come to notice that whenever I try to discuss the differences between Western and Eastern culture, I usually get the phrase "Our culture is older than yours. " thrown into my face. And they say Westerners have egos?? I think this will just add more fuel to the fire-the Chinese will believe once again that they are the superior race and commit genocide against all others. Well maybe they won't go that far but the point still remains the same. Just live here a while and you'll know what the hell I'm talking about.

I'm sure that the ending, if the movie was ever put into production, would end after the final battle with the buggers. Everyone cheers, Ender is thanked, the human race is saved, and that's the end. Hollywood would not put a movie up that shows that an alien race almost obliterated the human race because of communication problems. If they were to even do anything like that, then they would defiantly have to put the psychological game in there, as it is relevant to then ending of the book.
As you recall the buggers tried to communicate with Ender through this game. It was their only for, and as a result of learning his enemy through the game and the vids he watched, he grew to love them.

Any adaptation of the book in order to be a worthy, would have to show how Ender grew to love the buggers, how the felt from watching the vids, his emotional distress while playing the mind game. I think that is one of the most important aspects of the book, more so than the battle room fights. Those could be done in a mock military battle and still be pulled off to show how the children had to co-operate with each other. It would be much better done in 3d of course, but not necessary.
