My roommate is a pretty smart guy and is quite good in his chosen major. He's got an attitude similar to yours. The problem is he thinks that his talent makes him superior than everyone else he meets. He constantly talks about how much better he is than everyone else at everything he does. If he's not good at something, he dismisses it as pointless. Then he wonders why people find him insufferable.

To borrow a quote from The Big Bang Theory, "It's okay to be smarter than everybody, but you can't go around pointing it out...people don't like it." At some point in your life you do have to play nice with others.

I wasn't trying to be a dick, I was trying to understand what you were saying, since you were less than clear in your statement.

    Matrix, not molecules.
An ionic matrix is still composed of molecules. The bonding between them is created by the electrostatic effect of a respective nuclei on the electronics of surrounding atoms or molecules.

    Ions, not molecules.
Fair enough, mistaken terminiology on my part.

I suppose sweeping the floor does count as "working in a lab".

Um, what? Perhaps there's a deep layer of philosophical meaning underlying your statement, or perhaps you mean that most ionic compounds are solids in a crystal matrix at room temperature, but I can assure you that sodium chloride molecules and molecules of other ionic compounds do indeed exist under normal conditions (STP). The lab I work in has great big jars of sodium chloride on the shelf. It is also easily generated by the reaction of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid at STP under aqueous conditions. So again I say, what?

Why is it that almost every time the failings of the educational system are discussed, people like to trot out that phrase like it's a law of nature or something? Yeah, there are some crappy teachers, but there are also good teachers who know their stuff who "can" and choose to teach anyway.

As a Texan, what surprises me most about this is where it took place. Austin's way more open-minded than the rest of Texas (the quasi-official slogan is "Keep Austin Weird") and a large segment of the population works in the electronics/computers industry. Even if the teacher disagrees, you'd think she's at least heard of the concept. Then again, I'm probably ascribing too much competence to the AISD teachers.
