Perhaps this would explain why when I type a URL in Windows Explorer it launches my default browser (Firefox) rather than opening the page in IE in the same window...
Except the speed increase is in disk read/possibly writes. Compression could, and probably would weigh heavily on the CPU, creating a brand spanking new bottleneck.
GNOME aims for Action oriented buttons. Which would be...
[Save] [Don't Save]
Where as Windows uses...
[OK] [Cancel]...for almost ALL dialogs. No matter what. Sure, its consistant, but for users who don't read the dialogs, which most don't, OK and Cancel aren't very descriptive of what action the user is actually selecting.
I've always felt GNOME is in the right in this respect. Users will never stop complaining as long as Microsoft continues ignoring any sort of Human Interface Guidelines.
That's what OSx86Project.org is up to. The difference is, it's quite clear there are no legal issues installing Windows XP on a Mac system. Likewise, the MacOS X licence clearly states that OS X can't be installed on a non-Apple computer.
For people who don't use keyboard shortcuts, keep in mind, for them it is:
Stop typing
Use mouse to highlight text
Move up to toolbar and click the i button
Sometimes, click back in the document where you left off
This can be time consuming aswell, and for some reason, people just don't like keyboard shortcuts. Combine this with MSOffice's "bright" idea to hide toolbar items, not sure if it was in 2000 or XP, but that added another step of FINDING the Italicize button.
I stopped installing Lyx after somewhere around teh 5th dialog asking me to install something, and popping up a web browser with a web page. At the very least, it should have downloaded them for me, but optimally just give me options in the form of tick boxes.
Mind you, this is specific to the installer for Windows, but this is one Windows user swayed away by having too many browsers opened unnessecarily
I don't think of Ubuntu as a mobile distro. Sure, it comes with a livecd, but that is for testing. Knoppix is "marketed" as a full distro, to be used, even installed. Ubuntu Live is to test, and install from the install disc if you like it.
As for Fedora, and I think the same goes for ubuntu again; It's not for idiots "with their first peecee" it's for people who don't want to have to go through all kinds of.conf files and strange commands in a black screen. It's for people who actually use their computers to get work done.
The Internet Explorer licence states that you must have a licence to Windows in order to run it. Meaning, you can download IE and install it on Linux, but according to the licence, it's not legal.
NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A VALID EULA FOR ANY "OS PRODUCT" (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98, MICROSOFT WINDOWS NT 4.0, MICROSOFT WINDOWS 2000, MICROSOFT MILLENNIUM EDITION, MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP, OR ANY OTHER MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEM THAT IS A SUCCESSOR TO ANY OF THE FOREGOING OPERATING SYSTEMS) YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO INSTALL, COPY, OR OTHERWISE USE THE OS COMPONENTS AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS UNDER THIS SUPPLEMENTAL EULA.
Unfortunately, I don't have a link to this, I just copy and pasted from the IE6 Installer. I imagine Windows Media Player has something similar.

Am I the only one who noticed that the article mentions that they plan to bundle Trillian? Trillian is not available for Linux. I can only assume they were referring to GAIM.
I have to admit, I was becoming skeptical of this country this week when the Conservative party won the federal election. But this, this is what gives me back some faith in my country.
What the article summary fails to mention is that there is still a Firewire 400 port on the Macbook. They just removed what they feel people aren't using, and that has been Apple's way for as long as I can remember.
The modem can be taken care of by an optional dongle for the system, and Firewire 800 can be added with an Express Card. If anyone needs either, they're still available.
They've been releasing tiny bits and pieces of information about the system at a time, making everyone wonder how or what they're doing.
For example, the controller, it's been months, and still everyone is just itching to see how it will work, some real world examples. People want to know how the classic gaming service will work, people want to know it all.
Sony and Microsoft on the otherhand said "We'll be making a new system" and at E3 last year, they just let loose. Nintendo is teasing us, making us wait, making us curious.
They've intentionally built up a lot of hype with the Revolution, especially with the controller. They've got us right where they want us, they won't be letting us down.
Firstly, Azureus is Java based, so it has a bit more overhead. Secondly, it gives you FAR more control over what is going on.
It has better queues, statistics, and everything can be applied globally or on a per-torrent basis.
My laptop only has a 4200 RPM drive, so I can configure Azureus to run better by reducing file access and whatnot. My desktop on the other hand is more powerful, and I can tweak the settings to have much better performance.
Not saying everyone needs all this, but the article does say that Azereus is for more advanced users. Advanced users know what they are doing, and generally have better systems. If they don't like giving up a little bit more RAM for a little more power, then they can use something else.
That's what I got from the summary.
Seems to me this is pretty useless. So someone set up an emulator, and has it stream the video to the 360. Whooop-dee doo.
Correct me if I'm wrong aswell, but I don't recall my NES being able to render games in 480p, so yet another null point.
Oops, that was it. :)
My bad, Thanks.

Hahaha: Insightful. Oh, class. Only on Slashdot. :)
You missed the important bit:

Some of us who need to use our computers to get work don't think of it as boring, as much as it is usability-oriented.
Yeah. Which is why viruses on Linux are so rampant in the wild.
Am I the only one who noticed that the article mentions that they plan to bundle Trillian? Trillian is not available for Linux. I can only assume they were referring to GAIM.
We need real benchmarks! Get some Windows worms/viruses/trojans running on WINE and then we'll have some real-world benchmarks!
I say good day to you sir!

The question I want to know, is why would someone go pay good money for a Mac, only to install Windows.
I find that domain name more interesting...
It's already in the news!
