I mean, doesn't anyone feel the same way? It feels kinda good. No one says "...the elite masses of Windows users..." - Generally, that expression is reservered for the "elite few," as in, "...the elite few of Linux users..." - I like being apart of that group. If a person is a unaware, they will ramble on about some cool Windoze setup they have and then try to shine me on about asking what I have at home. When I say, "I don't run Windows" - the familiar confounded and confused reaction ensues, "...you don't run Windows??" they say. Actually, it gets me out of a lot of free troubleshooting! They will tell me about some problem and go on and on... then after thier problem description and eventual solicitation for advice/help.. I'll just say, "I don't run Windows! Sorry!" That excuse would no longer be valid if Linux were popular! So please, for the sake of many of us out here that don't want to bother with these clueless 1users... keep Linux SACRED!

  5. Ask Slashdot - on Tech Workers in Higher Demand · · Score: 1

This is something that has been of great concern to me and I would appreciate any and all follow up comments on the matter.
I work now as a Sys Admin, and have been working as a Sys Admin since '98. Until about 3 or 4 years ago... I enjoyed a stable job at a decent wage... but now I am working for scraps, for chump change... and I have concluded that I must get my degree because no one respects my nearly 10 years of experience and flawless work ethic as much as a degree. So, I am in the process of going to school and have a couple years to go to obtain my BS in CS.
My dilemma is, I am paying my own way here and the cost out of my pocket to complete the program will be around $40k, all told. Will it be worth it? I mean, will I really be making an acceptable wage when I finally grad? Current trends are mildly alarming. What do you guys think?

I'm all for this and from TFA, this sounds like a great thing (and lots of fun!) However, using the information gleaned here to apply to real-world situations is lacking in one MAJOR area: They neglect the aspect of social hacking. That is to say, attempting to gain access to a computer system through it's weakest link: THE USERS!
It's one thing to pit technical skill againt the threat of hacking, but it's been done over and over, all that technical skill accounts for nothing if you have a user that has his/her password written down on a sticky - on thier MONITOR!
Users must be educated and kept up to task on things like this, and it's my opinion that the IT/Security industry does not place enough emphasis in that arena, And to thier detriment...

A lot of negative vibe here! I would have thought the opposite - that is the idea that Internet 'radio', free of commercials and free to listen to would be WIDELY embraced by the Slahdot crowd... but wow!
I saw an argument that questioned why anyone would listen to a stream when you had mp3's and such on your local machine? That is SO closed minded! Why, to discover NEW music, you idiot! Not only that, there is a special connection to OTHER listeners, other listeners that obviously have the same taste and are WITNESSING what you are... right now! So, how is it to live in a cave then? Sheesh!
The other argument that tweaks me is "I don't want to listen to what other people (DJ's) are playing, I want to listen to what *I* want to listen to." Fair enough. But again, CLOSED minded. Music is ART; sir, and ART is a process of DISCOVERY. Go back to your CAVE, and btw, what the HELL are you doing posting on Slashdot anyway!?
Unbelievable! I support Internet streaming (and yes, with my wallet) because it is worth it to me, to not be subject to the rediculous nature of commercial radio. Internet streaming was born out of the idea that is does NOT take lots of money and equipement to share ideas (music, in this case) - the sharing of ideas and information! Anybody? How about this: ALL sending mail servers must have a special DNS record. Similar to an MX, we'll call it an SX record. So, when a host contacts my mail server, I query DNS, "Does 1.2.3.4 have an SX record?" The reply will be 1 or 0, yes or no. DNS replies with 1.. "okay, mail will be accepted", DNS replies with 0, "Sorry, your not an authorized mail server!" This will cut down on zombies FOR SURE, because Joe Clueless Cable-User does not have access to Comcast's DNS servers. Therefore, ONLY ligit organizations will have SX records (those that have control over thier DNS.) This WILL cut down on SPAM and virus garbage, I'm sure you would agree. The flaw, is that the spammers that DO have DNS systems as well, can add SX records to thier hearts content... and to that, we can reply on our standard mechanisms. I use strict SMTP, spamhaus RBL and Postgrey, myself. Horray for Postfix!!! But still, smtp needs some help and I think this would do it. -Ponga
