I'm running cooker 10 so I might be able to help point out some of the changes that will help "Joe User".

The most significant change is with the scheduler. X is much more responsive to the user now... You get used the the standard interface and have to wait as the screen redraws and such to the point that you really don't notice. Changing to the new kernel I have noticed that X seems significantly better. The system seems much more responsive than it used to be.

The packages that I upgraded seem to have more features as well. For instance Bittorrent now has an upload and download display so that I can see how much I have uploaded vs downloaded on any given torrent... Where as before it seemed that it was taking forever to download files, and my upload stream always was filled... I can now see that on any given torrent I am uploading about 50-100% more than I am downloading... Very nice...

Also my previous version was Mandrake 8.0 and I had to build and create several packages on my own. Now most of the packages seem that I use on a daily basis are included. Which saves me problems as well. I was able to just nuke my previous / partition keeping my /home partition and just reinstall the system without having to rebuild all my tools since most of them are included.

When I originally built the 2.6 kernel I was having sound problems... ie It doesn't play... Now 10.0rc1 had same problems... Which is why I pulled cooker and implemented it... Now sound is actually being recognized and configured automatically. Note that I did not have problems with sound with 8, but as I noted I was trying to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel and started to have problems...

Integrated alsa sound is also nice... The mixer works better than the old oss sound system.

Those are the major changes. The responsive increase, additional packages, more features in packages I already use, and the ease of setup with everything just working mark it up as a win in my book.

Anyway... I find it interesting reading the SEC filings that their whole concept comes down to a VPN to deliver content which they haven't started on yet.

Reading the latest reviews, where they actually show a box... Nice packaging, but couple of thoughts... If they are running a vpn and drm why do they need to communicate with ssl? Additional thoughts abound as to how long they expect their ssl encryption to be valid as one side the the communication is compromised...

Shrug, must be one of those things like the sealed unit the console comes in. It's impossible to take the plastic appart to get at the insides... right?

Anyway, all smoke and mirrors so far. I like how they have $5000 stock, no incoming capital, yet set the value of the stock to 5000 times it's starting price and run a 4 to 1 split on all outstanding stock... wow, instead of $5k they are now worth a cool $25 million... Oh and they say their chief competitors are xbox, nintendo and sony. Somehow I doubt even if they did have $25 million they could compete head to head with their competition...

Macular Degeneration is not merely marked by difficulty to see small things it is a condition that degenerats the light receptors in the eye itself. Primarily the portion of the eye that is used to see straight ahead. So basically they people end up using periphial(sp?) vision in order to see since most of their eyesight straight ahead is gone.

The need to increase the size of the text is not an issue of being able to focus on the text, but is a need to greatly magnify the text so that it can be seen out the corner of their eyes. Near-sighted and farsighted issues are completely different.

I too am interested in a low cost solution to allow the people I know to read letters, but it can be desk based... Currently I think the best option is to use a camera plugged into a 42" or larger television. But I would like to hear other suggestions.

PS. A recent report in Science news in suggests that there may be hope of treatment to stem the loss of sight. Soon it may prevent people with this condition from getting any worse. However it will not improve any loss vision. Improvement will probably have to wait on artificial eyes.
