It's all good, I hardly originated it (I'd happily take credit if I did). Tone is difficult to get across in text, though I really thought I laid it on thick enough that the tilde was unnecessary. Never underestimate Slashdot users ability to read sarcasm literally:)
The wiki I posted was out of laziness; there's a handful of people on/. and Reddit (wasn't going to source the latter...) advocating it. I'm not one of them, but I use it occasionally.
You can't expect every company/utility to have the same level of technical expertise. Sure, your power company can do this, but that doesn't mean an ISP has the technical know-how to send mass-messages. ~
I put my Galaxy S5 in my front pocket, back pocket, jacket pocket... never give it another thought. 'Course, I don't wear tight jeans, but jeans that slightly need a belt are fine (I can't CC in tight jeans, so I don't own any - holsters take room). I'm not 300lb, but I'm also not the 150 I was in high-school. Well-made phones are sturdy enough in my experience.
You know, my ISP could save money not providing email (no, they don't use Google or Yahoo, etc). If I don't want to use a provider that provides 'real email' I can switch, but the fact of the matter is, I get a better deal where I am despite the fact I don't use this service. Use your feet if you can get a better deal with AT&T (or VZW if you're ok with CDMA or Sprint if you're a sadist:)).
Or, do like me and use an MVNO that uses the same network, but a better rate.
Or, you could always just bitch about it on Slashdot. That works too.
Your generous offer is also appreciated; I played it 2 days & found it quite reminiscent of L.O.R.D. or LOtGD (links more for anyone else reading, I suspect you are familiar with at least the first of those) - moreso the latter (more on that in a moment). I played L.O.R.D. a lot in its heyday. The thrill of playing a multi-player game with friends scattered across town was a new one in 1994 and I was an age (18) when the social aspect really appealed to me. Fast forward 14 years, discovering LOtGD brought back a lot of memories and I even played it semi-regularly (was at a job that had fixed break times [don't miss that!] and it was something I could do in the arbitrarily assigned 'me-time'). Despite this, it wasn't really the same thing (in no insignificant part because I wasn't the same) and after 6 months or so I completely lost interest (my original friends weren't playing, I was older and in a different phase of my life, etc) and though I picked it up one more time a year or so later, I lost interest even quicker this time.
Playing with friends (and/or when I was younger and more social), I think I would really like KoL, but right now with as many things competing for my attention as exist, the only reason Slashdot gets to stay in my routine is I periodically read something that is quite useful to learn. And that's good, too, because I'd really miss it.
I do still game, but I'm more selective in what games I spend time on than I used to be and the only multi-player that appeals to me anymore is playing with my kids. Since I game in Windows, quite a few of my titles are Windows-only, but I do have a lot of multi-platform (Win/Mac/Linux) games, so just let me know if/when you're interested (it's an open invite, anytime).
I realize you can afford to get into gaming retail/steam/etc, but with Steam's Family Sharing* I can share my slightly obscene library with you to try out a wide assortment of old and new games if you like. It's all 100% above board and a nice way to legally try before you buy (a friend of mine has a library about double mine and I have tried quite a few games that way on his - saved me from a couple bad purchases:)); you've got my email, just ping me if interested.
Games are fun & you seem to occasionally have a little free time on your hands:) Also, in the past 15 years, indie games have exploded and the variety of games out there has never been greater (in my experience, I've been PC gaming since the mid-80's)
* Before anyone mentions 'he's not family', it's officially for family and guests and I checked, there's nothing against sharing with friends - in fact, the FAQ specifically mentions sharing with friends, though it is implicitly worded.
I don't know if you are new here or if you just stopped lurking & got an account, but you have made 3 particularly douchey posts (that I have noticed) on this topic alone. Please spend some more time lurking or figure out what is making you miserable in life and deal with that before posting on Slashdot.
I mean this sincerely, I don't like to see people as unhappy as you seem to be.
Bring on the 'flamebait' or 'troll' mods, I have Karma to burn & I felt it needed to be said. Not posting anon because I stand behind my words, they can be taken at face-value.
I think the new proxy policy should slow him down, but I'm concerned that someone may not post something because they can't obfuscate themselves via proxy... Sometimes we have to defend speech we won't like to secure speech we do. That's how I look at APK.
At the risk of Godwinning, first they came for APK and everyone cheered...
Could have perhaps worded that better, I mentioned it because in the past I saw someone get flamed for his icon & he said he didn't realize it would happen & it was too late then. Either way, the icon serves nothing but a visual distraction (the only red in the comments).
yeah, we're at 4 and counting... I really don't mind 1 post when it is relevent (occasionally it is). Still spammy, but... whatever. Compared to what he used to do, 4 is tame, but 4 is already unacceptable.
I'm torn, though, blocking stories with StartsWithABang or Forbes, etc makes sense, but I hate to see comment filtering that isn't a user setting. If I had the option, would I tick the "block all APK posts (beta)" box? Yeah, I think I would. But do I want them just doing it? Duhno, not a fan of censorship. I'd happily never see another post with the 'n-word' (yes, I expect to be trolled for the near future for that comment), but let me decide (actually, please let me decide so I can block my future racist stalkers, heh).
I understand some people signed up by accident using their G+ etc credentials, but if we could lose the icons altogether... they add nothing to the conversation.
Yup, yup, I was in college when Quake came out & work study in the IT; many a Friday afternoon were spent owning the 'old men' I worked with (heh, who were far younger than I am now, funny how perspective changes as you age).
As much as I liked Quake and Quake 2, UT was my game & I played it for almost a decade regularly on my IBM mechanical keyboard with mouse nub between G & H keys. Pre-WASD, I actually crossed my wrists playing so my left hand could do the arrows while my index finger did the pointing and thumb did the shooting (after a couple hours, I'd usually switch to aiming with my middle finger as my index would get quite sore). Thumb meant I couldn't put rockets in a spiral (couldn't hit left & right keys simultaneously reliably) & using a single finger means I have arthritis today (mainly in those two fingers), but man, good times:)
My second child has shown interest in gaming, so I have decided to start her off with the original UT which I have started playing again - I own 2004, black, etc but the despite them being better in pretty much every measurable way, I still like the original (the newest one looks really nice, though).
That's a fair line in the sand. For me, I hate how inanely formulaic it feels, but I really can't stand most sitcoms for the exact same reason, so nothing against BBT specifically (as I said, I was attempting to explain the AC more than sharing my own opinion at that point). It can be novel for a few episodes or even a season or so if the writing is good enough, but eventually it's just the same crap (and don't get me started on laugh tracks).
This is something I like about typical British shows (and something most people I know complain about): their series's (read=seasons) are shorter and there are typically fewer, so it's easier to keep it fresh.
and offer a shared bathroom
So, sharing something like that? eww ...
When it is all 4, does that statement even make sense?

Well, I've worked for a few & unfortunately, that's more true than it should be.
:)
In this case, though, the '~' at the end denoted sarcasm

Security is a process, not an application. Nothing is completely secure - nor will it ever be.
It may not be an application, but I'd like the see the NSA, et al recover from one of these.
I jest, of course, but these things fascinate the little kid in me.
Even at +5, agreed.

I think the acronym PC is already in use on slashdot, sorry.

Crap, I spoke before scrolling down, lol :)
When is the last time APK posted a reply to you? I've only seen him twice in a long time ...
