The State of Slashdot: Https, Poll Changes, Auto-Refresh, Videos, and More

As of yesterday, Slashdot now serves over https. In addition, the polls have been moved exclusively to the right rail, and will not show up with the other stories any longer. We've also disabled auto-refresh, and fixed various issues with search and other features. In the last few weeks, we've also discontinued videos, and removed the "Jobs" section of the site. You can follow all of the changes on the Slashdot blog.

Are you kidding? AC posts are the majority of the worthwhile posts on this site, simply because they're not karma whoring. However, it's easy to understand how people wouldn't be aware of that, as the Slashdot moderation system fails to find most of the good posts.

The moderation system as it is presently implemented is ineffective. It gives a boost to any first posts since they're seen by far more moderators, and any later comments (after the first 100) have a far less chance of receiving positive moderation since one has to click the "load all comments" button to see them, but most people (including moderators) aren't interested in reading so many comments. So the moderation system is just showing you the best of the first posts, which by nature of being first posts, are the posts which had the least amount of thought put into them. That's the problem.

So what you see are people gaming that system. They'll look for stories to appear and immediately (without even reading the article) post whatever drivel they can think of that others might agree with, so that when the first few moderators read the comments and have only about 20 posts to pick between, their drivel might be the favorite and receive a positive moderation point. Meanwhile someone who reads the article, does some additional research, and an hour later posts an informed comment will likely never have their post seen by anyone because there are already more than 100 "first posts" and so their comment won't even be displayed in single line format unless people click "load all comments" which most people don't.

If you want to fix Slashdot, fix the moderation system. Load all comments by default, hide scores (and score-based comment sorting) from moderators, and present comments to moderators in such a way as to compensate for the first-post boost, e.g. keep track of how many times a post is seen by a moderator and give posts to moderators in an order sorted by how few times each post has been reviewed by a moderator. ...and of course do away with the practice of only giving a few mod points to moderators, ideally they should be able to give their opinion on every post. Indeed, as things are, they're often not willing to use mod points on AC posts as they know that ACs don't build karma and want to save the points for actual users, which is dumb since they're supposed to be rating the posts, but then of course the idea that each post shouldn't stand on its own, but instead that the track record of a user should be a factor is also dumb.

At the very least the following should become public knowledge, easily accessible to all users regardless of whether they do or do not have an account here:

    1. Who moderated a comment. This includes anybody affiliated with Slashdot in any way, including editors such as timothy.
    2. When the moderation took place.
    3. The mod rating that was given.
    4. Any related metamod ratings of the mod, including who performed the metamodding and what the outcome was.

The score of each comment should link to a page showing this information.

Additionally, it should be possible to download bulk dumps of the moderation data. This would allow anyone to perform analysis of the moderation that goes on here. Using this data we could find new ways of identifying abusive moderations and moderators, for example.

Some people will wrongly claim that such transparency will just scare people away from moderating. If that's the case, then that's a good thing. Anyone who will censor others but will not put up with scrutiny of that censorship should not be moderating. After all, if somebody is responsible enough to moderate, then they should be responsible enough to allow this to be done fully in the open with complete transparency.

Others will probably cast doubt about the motives of people who want greater moderation transparency here. Sorry to burst their bubble, but there's no conspiracy here! It's as simple as too many excellent comments ending up with scores of -1, and too many low-quality comments getting modded up. Instead of working for us, the moderation system here is used as tool to suppress opinions that are deemed "unpopular", and often it promotes misinformation.

Something is truly wrong when one has to constantly browse this site at -1 just to get a reasonably wide variety of opinions regarding the matter being discussed, rather than the narrow view that we tend to get when bad moderation happens.

This is where Slashdot can set itself apart from its competitors. Instead of being a site like Stack Overflow, Reddit or Hacker News where censorship is the norm and discussion is highly controlled, Slashdot could become the tech discussion site where real in-depth discussion happens. It doesn't have to be like SO, where vague community standards are applied in an haphazard manner. It doesn't have to be like Reddit, where mod squads prowl and attack. It doesn't have to be like Hacker News, where anything resembling negativity is stomped out because it might hurt the feelings of some thin-skinned hipsters or Millennials. Slashdot can be the place where ideas are exchanged freely, without members of the community going around unjustifiably suppressing and censoring one another.

There is a new vibrancy. It's because you who are in charge are like us once again (one of us, one of us!). You understand that this isn't about the monies, it isn't about pageviews and numbers, it's about technologists by day who can take a few minutes to just be nerds and talk and discuss with each other. It's about having slashdot as hobby, an interest, someplace where I can hang up the coat and hang out for a while. You've started to remember that and it is showing. We, the community, see it. I feel at home here once again.

Keep up the good work - here's to hoping ./ and it's community can be a home for the geeks, the nerds, the techies and all those inspiring to be. Thanks guys, she's looking good again!

Firstly, thank you immensely for the positive changes recently instated to revive this noble community of intellectual exchange from a critical state. I am excited to see where things progress, but I feel compelled to bring up a related series of egregious architectual faults with the site design.

I speak of nonlibre Javascript software embedded into every page, a good deal of which is not even hosted on your own domain.

Slashdot unfortunately falls prey to the very same ills that plague nearly every modern website these days: a deep level of user tracking outsourced to thirdparty corporations. This is for any reason unethical, be it for financial gain or otherwise. That it happens on a technology enthusiast site with such a large quantity of intellectual commentary on the systemic ethical quandries inherent in mass surveillance is a tragic irony.

Using the GNU LibreJS extension for Firefox-based browsers to prevent falling into the Javascript trap is an eyeopener. This page alone currently has 79 unique pieces of Javascript code that is detected and blocked by LibreJS. Javascript can be an ethical way to extend website functionality only under the following conditions:

    0) All Javascript code must be Free/Libre Software. 'AGPLv3 or later' preferred.

    1) Javascript must NEVER be loaded from a server not under the site administrator's direct control.

    2) Javascript code must not be doing something unethical, like user tracking without consent.

    3) All pages must retain core functionality when Javascript is disabled.

Please respect these rules, as running software on our machines as a website administrator puts you in a very powerful position. That most site admins abuse this position of power through either malicious intent or neglect is why many of us choose to disable Javascript entirely. Right now none of these points are being met, so Slashdot has a lot of work to do to ethically implement Javascript functionality into the site. It is quite depressing that 2) even needs to be mentioned, but Google Analytics code is embedded directly into all Slashdot pages that allows 3rdparty tracking even for users who arent logged in.

As for point 0), you can follow the instructions here for an effective way to license all Javascripts code under a GPL-compatible license.

As for 1), there is no excuse for executing code on all of your users' machines that you are not even in control of. On this page alone, Javascript files are attempted to be loaded from googleadservices.com, cdn-social.janrain.com, cdn.taboola.com, s.ntv.io, googletagservices.com, google-analytics.com and rpxnow.com. Stop this immediately. And stop hosting images from thirdparty servers, as they can contain malicious exploits as well. This page loads images from gstatic.com, doubleclick.net, amazonaws.com, & scorecardresearch.com.

It displays an ineptitude in website administration on an embarassing level if admins cannot create and host all of the images, code, and css on their own website. Even advertisements, if they must exist, should be selfhosted (although accepting subscriptions & donations would be a great alternative!).

For point 3), we should at the very least be able to change our comment viewing threshold without logging in, post a comment as AC, and create accounts & login without Javascript. Please test the website with GNU LibreJS, NoScript, and uMatrix browser extentions to ensure functionality. This site has enough techsavy users who care and use some (or all) of these extensions. Please do not make our lives hardware to participate in making this community better.

Sorry Chas, but posting from a Republican / conservative / center-center right / "classic liberal" viewpoint (as recognized in the US, and not so much in Europe/CA/AU/NZ) will often get you modded down on Slashdot, and even mod bombed over the years. It doesn't take "whack-job" posts either. All you need to do is post a dissenting viewpoint. It happens to me frequently. I can';t tell you how many times my posts have been picked out of a thread and marked "off-topic", "troll", or "flamebait" when I'm writing about the same subject as everyone else, but I have a different perspective. Citing major media, government or academic sources in support of a post is another good way to get marked "troll" too. I've seen other people repeatedly down modded until they had little karma and stopped coming back to Slashdot.

You apparently think that only "whack-job" posts cause enmity, but you seem to overlook the possibility that other people here can be whack-jobs, or otherwise have bad values, act in a thoughtless or ill-considered manner, or even suffer from some sort of mental or emotional disorder, including various obsessions and inability to tolerate contrary views.

Remember this recent story I submitted? Stephen Hawking and 150 Royal Society Scientists: Brexit Disaster For UK

There are people whining about my views on the completely unrelated topic of Snowden & the NSA. One of them keeps posting the same nonsense in multiple stories, and not so different from people that believe that soap operas are real seems to think that I agree with everything going on in the stories I submit. Just sad. This is hardly the only time this has happened.

Over at Soylentnews someone registered my username so it wouldn't be available. (I have a nice alternative picked out in case I ever want to go there.) In more than one discussion there was a comment along the lines of, "I'm glad we don't have that guy here!" Of course someone else answered that maybe that wasn't such a good thing since even though the poster seldom agreed with me, my views provided plenty of food for thought.

Do you remember "coid fjord"? C-O-I-D, not C-O-L-D. Because of the fonts used on Slashdot it is very difficult to tell the difference, especially since the L in my account becomes a capital i. That is one of two or three accounts created to harass me and troll other people by making misleading or harassing comments in threads. Another person so upset by my views that he became unhinged.

There are at least one or two threads (maybe more) in some stories within the last few years that have death wishes directed at me modded +5. In at least one of those threads I posted a comment pointing out the questionable nature of such a post and my post was modded -1 as I recall. I wouldn't even even bother trying to count the many other "die in a fire" and various other death wishes directed at me that didn't get modded up.

You might suspect that this has affected my karma, and it has. I've been repeatedly modbombed over the years, and there are apparently a few people that are still up to it when they can.

William F. Buckley once said,"I'd rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University." Participation on Slashdot can help one appreciate the wisdom of that statement.

So Chas, if you haven't experienced negative affects due to posting from a Republican viewpoint I would say you should rejoice for that, but I don't think your experience is necessarily reflective of the typical experience of Republicans or conservatives.
