IDE drives have never been the pinnacle of reliability. You get what you pay for. I just make sure to get the ones with the 3 year warranties because of this-in 3 years, you normally have a reason to get a new drive anyway (up until recently, with 300GB what am I saying? MS XP 5 or whatever comes out in 2006 won't need that much space for Joe User unless digital music and movies take off even more).
RMA'ing a couple maxtors is normal. I've found most drive companies have drives that fail about the same rate when I worked for a company that went through different brands like toilet paper.

Give it a year, and the rest of us will be able to afford it when the 500GB model comes out.

Does anyone know why Apple's support in Europe is so bad? I work as a sysadmin at a scientific institution in Germany, and I moved here four months ago from Michigan. I am so shocked at how bad it is here compared to in the states. We preordered a G5 on the day of the announcement and it came in today. That's a lot longer than it took in the States. Oh, and Panther-we've been beta-testing it for some time, and everything we've found that doesn't work with our network (setting a central cups print server for example) we have told Apple, and they told us they would investigate the problems for 700 euro per incident. FOR US TO FIX THEIR BUGS! I like Apple a lot, but it seems they care very little about Europe, and being as that's where I am, and we are running about 400 macs in the institute, I think they should care more. Anyone feel the same? Or anyone in Europe have better experiences?

Incidentally, I just moved to Dresden. Unlike Japan, the Dresdners are still rebuilding from the horror of that night, and the flood last year didn't help. However, all rebuilding should be complete for the beginning of 2006 (the city's 800th anniversary). You should see the Frauenkirche, an incredible old church that was utterly destroyed in 1945, and just started rebuilding in the late 80s (with private money, nonetheless). The scaffolding just came off part of the outside, and it looks amazing. I consider myself very lucky to be able to witness the Frauenkirche's dome in its former glory, as it's been destroyed since 1945. I'm getting very excited, being an American and seeing the horror my country inflicted on this amazing city. If you ever visit East Germany, GO TO DRESDEN and check out the resolve of these amazing people to restore their city to its former greatness. It's a nice place to live, and a great place to visit.

They're interesting-but I think I would get a headache using it for too long. It's definitely only for 3d images, as browsing the web with it would kill you. There is a tracker to tell if you're viewing a 3d image or not, and then the effect switches off. At the institute where I work, we demoed one, and I had to give my opinions on it. I believe, however, that the place was charging 500 euro for the screen or something like that? We had a cell modeling program that would display a 3d image of the cell, and that use of the monitor would be nice. I tried to get in after hours and see if I could find some quake patches or something, but at that time my keycard to the institute wasn't working correctly.

The problem is that most people buy the record for a couple "good tracks." Most records I have purchased seem at first to have a couple good songs and a bunch of filler, but I find myself liking the "filler" tracks more when I come back to the recording in a year. Apparently I seem to be the only one who thinks this, as I hear so much complaining about "I bought a cd and I only like 2 songs I hate the RIAA blah blah". Listen with an open mind. There's a reason you like this artist, and most of the time, if you give a record a little time you will learn to respect the rest of it. There's quite a difference between a bad song and a song that doesn't grab you right away.
