  10. Palm is smart on Palm Announces Separated Software Operations · · Score: 4, Informative

In the computer industry, the money is ALWAYS in software rather than hardware. Look at the margins that hardware companies make, or why Microsoft sells each X-Box unit at substantial loss. The marginal cost for an additional copy of Palm OS, or Tony Hawk 2.5X, or whatever, is practically nothing; however, the marginal cost of an additional video card or Palm Pilot is substantial. Greater profits are earned in the software market.

Also, market saturation will reach the hardware market for PDAs much faster than the software market. Who wants to buy another Palm after they just bought their V for three hundred dollars two years ago? Eventually, devices will reach sufficient power and size that continual advancement is senseless, and additional profits will only be extracted by writing new software. Way to see the future, Palm.

Also, who needs a pen to input stuff when you can enter letters by pressing the up and down arrows on your iPod!

Although I consider myself a civil libertarian, I clearly see the problem with holding sacrosanct every right of privacy imaginable, especially considering the current political climate. However, some of the measures the government has looked at adopting deserve close scrutiny. Does anyone seriously think that if US companies are not allowed to export strong crypto products, Bin Laden and his cohorts will not have access to them? There are other examples as well.

  18. UVa student's perspective on Technology vs. Cheating at the University of Virginia · · Score: 1
As a student here, I think I have a somewhat unique perspective on the situation (ironically, I almost took the PHYS 106 class this semester that the cheating occured in).

As incredible as it seems to all of you that this kind of cheating would take place, it is even more dumbfounding to the students here. The Post article hints at the seriousness of our honor system, but i don't think it gets across its finality. If the students currently in the university are found guilty, they are asked to leave or are expelled. If a student who has already graduated is convicted, they lose their diploma. The system is single sanction so any guilty verdict leads to this penalty.

Several students have already withdrawn, even this late in the semester, after this broke. It's that damned serious. It is a sad commentary that this could occur here, where honor is supposedly a very serious matter, but I guess we don't take it as seriously as we pretend to =(
