  1. Michael Crichton kinda predicted this on "Augmented Reality" For the Assembly Line · · Score: 1

I'm sure there were already working prototypes, it's not a unique idea, etc etc, but something very similar to this was described in the novel Airframe, published a few years back - a VR headset used to access the manual. It sounds even cooler now with the ability to delve through "virtual parts," but I remember thinking that was a neat idea at the time.

That said, I still prefer printed manuals to the PDF files that come with most software from a store, so who knows how usable a virtual manual would be.

  4. Re:Did AOL Cause The Dotcom Depression? on Glory Days at AOL · · Score: 1
I think that might indeed be one of the causes. The way the story is frequently told around here, there are a few reasons all the dotcoms collapsed. First, they had zt00pid business plans that sought to increase brand awareness and generate cash flow, not look to profitability. (The joke goes something like "1. Start dotcom 2. Spend millions on building brand awareness 3. ??? 4. profit!)

Second, and somewhat related, many of the dotcoms relied on advertising dollars as their primary source of revenue. When the bottom fell out of the banner ad market, these companies lost their revenue stream and had to fold.

Now, how does AOL's behavior come into that picture? Well, as the article says, they tried to get 50% of any VC money a dotcom raised just for an advertising deal! This did two things: crippled dotcoms cash position and preventing them from ever reaching profitability due to the high burn rate, and eventually led to a fallout for ad revenue, as companies started to notice the extremely crappy returns from spending tons of money on advertising deals.

I wonder what AOL did with all of that cash? I guess Turner gave it to the UN :P

The actual precedent is somewhat less clear than you indicate. First of all, the "DOJ" did not rule on anything. They were the prosecutor for the US government; the District and Circuit Courts of DC "ruled" in the personages of Robert Penfield Jackson, Colleen Kotter-Kelly, etc. Also, Microsoft's argument was that by developing an integrated product, the result was superior to standalone products. A consent decree in Microsoft II ruled that this is okay as long as the integration provided "some" additional functionality.

Personally, I believe that Microsoft illegally tied the two products, because the way they programmed the integration seemed to exist solely to preclude disabling IE, but that's just me. As an interesting side note, one of the most important things about the service pack to Windows XP is its consent decree compliance. Now, you can turn off IE, Outlook Express, and (most importantly, at least now) Microsoft Virtual Machine.

When I was twelve years old, I didn't have the slightest interest in having sex with anyone, and yet almost every comment here runs along the lines of: "have as much sex as you can!"

This is pretty crummy advice. Meaningless sex seems great to people who don't get any, but it kinda sucks in the long run. You don't develop real relationships with girls and tend to treat them as inferior. This is the worst preparation you can get for college and later on - you'll be one of the guys that can't stay in a lasting relationship and ends up not getting married for a long time, if ever.

I was a 6th grader at Trinity Elementary as a twelve year old. I didn't worry about girls, like lots of other people; I played lots of basketball, baseball, and golf, read lots of books (and computer magazines... *sigh*), and went to as many Braves games as I could. The one thing I would say to twelve-year-old Kyle is this: In the coming years, you will fail. Small and large, failure is inevitable. Don't be afraid! If you want something or someone pursue your goal with tenacity and without fear; if you fail, dust yourself off, get back up and keep trying.

And if that doesn't work, sell your xerox now and put it all in Amazon. Then sell Amazon and buy a ferrari.

It's kinda funny how that article has absolutely no clue what "counting cards" at blackjack means. Despite what Rain Man may have led you to believe, counting cards requires nothing more than remembering which cards have been dealt and keeping a mental count of how likely you are to get a 10 when needed. If you do this correctly and spread your bets so you bet more when the odds are better, you gain a 1-2% player edge of your action - average return of ~1.5% of every dollar bet.

(Yes, it's a little more complicated than that, but I'm a poor student and I've never been to Vegas, so i'd appreciate no overly disparaging criticism. If anyone can't recognize my sarcasm, this quote sounds exactly like one of many from Rand's Atlas Shrugged, which despite being full of (in my view) oversimplifications and flaws is a decent enough critique of governmental control over a lot of stuff. The government had no problem with local phone monopolies, and seems to have no problem with cable monopolies, but can't accept a satellite monopoly. Being a monopoly is in itself fine, the illegal part is when the monopoly uses its power to quash competition (by, for example, tying its browser software to the operating system, or forcing vendors to install its OS on every box they sell if they want to be able to sell it at all :). Charlie Ergen is trying to show the government they can't have it both ways: a competitive satellite TV marketplace and cost-effective satellite broadband, even if the broadband service loses money.

Besides, if Ergen thought the rural internet provider industry was so successful, would he really jump out of it for the fairly shortsighted goal of pressuring the government to approve his merger? *sigh* Is it just me or does the FCC rarely ever have its act together? I'm moving to Sealand!
