  1. Re:SuddenOutbreakOf... on Indian Copyright Bill Declares Private, Personal Copying "Fair Dealing" · · Score: 2, Insightful

Disclaimer : I am an Indian.

I didn't want to respond, but I thought a bit of a perspective might help.

You know, there is a constant attempt to try and get rid of this problem. The solution to this problem is education and education is only now showing signs of improvement. As the GP mentioned, India has a very old culture and only in the last 50 years or so the country has been trying to get rid of this problem. Looking at the progress we made, we should be able to eradicate most of it in another 50 years.

Can you say the same of other countries ? It is not that long ago that the U.S. managed to mostly solve apartheid. How long did that take since the country gained its independence ? 200 years ? The U.S. by and large was made of immigrants. That means those guys went through hardships and came to the U.S. You would think they would have minimum common sense of how to treat other people. That didn't work out very well for colored people, did it ?

Humans are by and large animals. The only solution is education. Education takes time.

Wow, this is when I wish there was a special +6 rating for comments. Very well said.

I can't say I've ever used a review in purchasing a video game. Ign is famous for giving low scores to great games, and it gives the impression that reviews are worthless on other sites too. Gamespot is a bit better at understanding that games are meant to appeal to a certain audience, and thus need to be judged on that standard, but Gamespot gets it wrong occasionally as well.

These "review" sites are actually nothing more than a marketing tool of the video game industry. It's a form of viral advertising, really.

Many others have already said it, but I will reiterate that www.realhotstuff.com is pretty much the best place to get a Supercard in the US right now. I ordered one and a micro SD card from Amazon.com, and the Supercard arrived in 3 days. It's still 8 days and counting for the micro SD card!

I cannot stress enough my adoration for how Nintendo is taking a "we don't really care" approach to backup devices. I even end up buying games that I really like simply because I want to collect them (I've done this with both Phoenix Wright games). As bad as it is that I'm pirating some games, it actually causes me to buy ones I wouldn't have in the first place, and when I tell my friends how much I like these games, they buy them as well. Nintendo just -gets it- when it comes to making money with video games.

This doesn't apply with the iPhone though - it's not doing anything new or prettier, it is simply relying on brand popularity via the iPod to move units. You literally are paying hundreds of dollars extra for a brand name and few additional features. I'm sure many people will still purchase it for this reason, but without a price drop, it will go the way of the Playstation 3.

It's only priced so high so that it doesn't cannibalize ipod sales. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't seem to realize there's no reason to purchase a phone for such a premium price when you can get these:

    Creative Zen Vision 30G $284.99 + Nokia 6103 $160 = $444.99

    For less than this:

    iPhone $499/4gb $599/8gb

Two superior devices (the best camera phone + the best portable HD based video player) for less than an overhyped, overpriced product... hmm. I wonder what people are going to buy.

It is actually this mentality that most likely causes the most complaining.

People who play daily will almost welcome the forced breaks. But people, like you, who do not play daily, believe the game should conform to your standards every minute of time you "grant" to playing the game.

Despite what you may believe, this does not put priority on your playing time, it makes it even less important than those people who do play daily (since it is them that will contribute the most revenue to the game, via actual money, mindshare, or viral support).

It could have used a "I-sure-hope-so" dept line, and maybe some positive publicity would be directed at Slashdot when other sites link this story (when they undoubtedly will). Quite the opposite. You can learn a great deal from staring at that "box" in your room. Those people at the City Hall (or bar, or restaurant, or whatever fictional place people need to "get outside and go to") wouldn't be able to tell you about the current situation on definition of planets, or the state of affairs in Israel/Lebanon.

Those people are too busy superficially socializing and killing brain cells to drown out the idea that there's something more to life than what other people's preconceived notions are.

Then again, staring at this box has taught me one extremely valuable lesson - people will say anything, even if it is meaningless, in order to get a first post (and the inevitable mod points following it).

This is probably true with many games, but the ones that you really remember are the ones that trigger emotions, and this is rarely possible without a top notch story.

My favorite game(s) of all time are Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, and it definitely seems like the story in both games was concieved first. Even a game like GTA is very reliant on story. Many games do manage to succeed without a thorough plot, like the Mario games and sports games, but it seems like those are far and few between - at least, in modern gaming.
