What about the effect of Live CDs? These new OSes have something that Windows and Linux didn't have when they first began--a CD that can boot the OS and let you check it out without installing it first. This allows proponents of an OS to easy show off its capabilities.
I believe that one is a right brain activity while another is a left brain activity. In tech people, the non communication side seems to be dominate. I've also noticed that we tend to like math and history and dislike english.

Your right. The were they "The Troll Group" for a while. Then they changed it to TrollOne. A year later they spent a million dollars to change it to TrollTech.
The Atlanta Trading company merged with an offshoot of a skin care company -- Olay Computers. This new company then merged with a research group from Louisiana Tech.
My first job out of college was working in retail. I did stock and helped customers when the salespeople were busy. I didn't really learn anything about IT, but I did learn how to work with a lot of different kinds of people. I think that it was a good experience.
To paraphase Bill Cosby: It doesn't matter what degree you have, on your first job you're going to be getting coffee for somebody.
Think about it. When someone decides to buy a computer, what's the first thing they think? Dell. Who sells more computers than anyone else? Dell.
Aveage non IT person calls Dell and it goes like this:
"I'd like a computer so I can edit my home movies".
"Well, we have some Windows based PCs that do that. And we also have something new you might be interested in from Apple. Tell me more about what you want to do....."

...but I went to one when I visited my uncle. I was impressed. They seemed to have a better selection than CompUSA, especially books.
