  1. Re:In more trouble than most realize... on Globalization Decimating US I.T. Jobs · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am an electrical engineer who manages an offshore engineering project in India. I can tell you how it's gone so far: - Difficulty in communications, both because of the time shift and because of difficulty penetrating the language barrier - Schedules which are inordinately longer, often due to technical difficulties in accessing development tools remotely - Long lists of errors when specifiying new parts In the end, it's not saving the company any money. It only saves them money on paper because they don't add in the cost of management or engineering time in correcting all the mistakes. So, I am not too worried about outsourcing at this point.

It is their fault. They are the ones who insisted on pumping the PS3 full of bleeding edge technology, expected the best and never planned for the worst. There are always big risks with using the latest and greatest.

Everyone is quick to talk about how the PS3 will fail, but I'm not so sure about that anymore. There's a lot to criticize Sony for, but the PS2 was a success to spite it's problems, and all the negative publicity the PS3 is getting now will only compel everyone to go check it out as soon as it hits the shelf. Even if they have to drop the price to sell more of them, how long do you think it's going to take before they can mass manufacture it cheaply? Not long.

I use ebay for purchases all the time and I never have problems with fraudulent items. I buy from sellers with high ratings who have been around awhile and have legit descriptions of their products. What I do notice though is that most often these sellers are larger ebay stores and rarely individuals. If you are buying something from Joe Sixpack in Montana who's sold six items total, it's a crapshoot because they obviously have less to lose if they get a negative rating.

What am I going to do about it? The Razr is capable of running as a EVDO modem. All that's required is a couple of configuration changes using a SEEM editor. In the end disabling these options will hurt verizon and other carriers that do this, there will always be another carrier that leaves these options on, they'll do it tostay competitive.

  7. There Are Reasons For High Cost Of Living on Where the Highest Paying Tech Jobs Are · · Score: 2, Insightful

I always see these comparisons of the best places to live, how to get the most value for your dollar, etc. In most places where the cost of living is very high, it's usually because a lot of people want to live there. Why? Because it's a great place to live. Places like San Diego, San Francisco and Boston are beautiful cities which offer a style of living and things to do that can't be found in Idaho or Alabama. If all you want to do is save your pennies and have a big house, then these are good places to live. But money is most definately not everything.

  8. Re:Erm... on Movies Delivered Via Television Signal · · Score: 1

Yes I do, because they already add 10 new movies per week, which is more than enough for me, shows I get through my DVR, and the last thing I want is another box and another service to pay for. I suspect the vast majority of consumers will think the same. There is no doubt this will go the way of divx. The prototype for the future of television is internet delivery, which ABC is already doing so this service really makes no sense.

I don't understand what the benefit of this is supposed to be over using cable or satellite on demand. It's basically the same thing. Is it supposed to be a substitute for those who want to drop their cable or satellite service? Otherwise this seems pretty pointless to me.

  10. Re:I don't care on Cox May replace its own DVRs with TiVos · · Score: 1

I'm a Comcast customer and can tell you that they're the ones who should be trying to strike a deal with Tivo. I have a Motorola DVR and while I love the functionality of the service itself, the box sucks. Never have I seen a product so heavily littered with obvious software bugs make it to market.

Just using it for an hour will show glaring RTOS flaws, such as buffer underruns causing the video/audio to freeze, lockup issues, slow response to remote commands (on the order of seconds). There are many other bugs a 5th grader could have documented after playing with it for a week.

I can only assume that comcast wanted to get a competing service to its customers as quickly as possible, I can't envision any other reason that Motorola would allow this steaming pile crap out the door.

  11. Up To Sony on Video Games and the Hi-Def Format Wars · · Score: 1

It's really up to Sony right now to produce a solid, bug free console. If the system does not perform well and appeal to enough gamers then Blue Ray will follow Betamax.

  12. Re:Unfixable on Heads Roll As Microsoft Misses Vista Target · · Score: 1

I disagree: 1.) The average user doesn't care about choices when it comes to an OS. They just want their whatever to work easily and have the setup be something familiar so that when they need to work on computer y instead of computer x its no big deal. 2.) I don't understand the monolith comment. You shouldn't expect an OS that's supposed to be loaded with features and functionality to be just a few lines of code. Granted that MS screwed up big here, but their problems have nothing to do with modularity.

There are clearly some good ideas out there right now and some of them are making good money. Personally, I think MySpace is lame, but I'm not 15. There's another site I've seen called catch27, which allows people to create fake trading cards of themselves and try to collect a deck of the most popular people. It seems silly, but it turns a profit. I have to wonder though how long a site like that will remain popular? Will MySpace be making money 5 yrs. from now?

This won't make anyone want to switch to OpenOffice or anything else. My company still has plenty of copies of Office 2000 floating around. I don't think there are a lot of people out there who absolutely need Office 2007 to get their work done. Is there some revolutionary feature, besides maybe improved security in this next release that will make everyone run out and buy it? Or is it just another shiny product to put on the store shelf?

I did a paper on the Challenger several years ago in college and the O-rings were almost completely burned through when they recovered the SRBs after a 1982 launch (I can't remember which shuttle). They knew then and still did nothing. There were political and economic pressures to keep quiet about problems in the program.
