I have the same problem with firefox on OSX. I'll just be casually browsing the web, when all of a sudden firefox decides to use a *large* amount of swap. It takes patience when firefox is doing this, because the program will come back, you just have to wait, and when it's finished swapping, close all your windows. It's quite annoying. They've had this bug in firefox since 1.0.2 (I think), I'm now running 1.5.0.1.
-- When I talk about a lot of swap, I'm talking about 800-1000MB. If that isn't high, then tell me what is.
Exactly why I never have, and never will, buy this corporate bullshit. They always claim features that they don't deliver. Take the PowerBook G4 15". Look at it, that sleek power, and an ATi 9700! Well, how lovely, it's a little gaming machine. Not! When you read the fine print, you find out that those jerks only have the GPU running at AGP 4x. Now let me ask you, where else can you find AGP 4x? On my 1999 P3, of course. Not only that, but that crummy GPU wont even pull the iTunes visulizer along at 30FPS!
Just a note, for those of you who don't know. I have a 1440 x 960 PowerBook, which was released in the later half of 2005.
Get this, iTunes takes the resolution down when you start the visulizer, so it can't even pull 30 FPS at >1280 x 800.
Any other useless claims for us Apple? Oh wait, I remember one...
Graphics, Designed
The 15-inch PowerBook G4 comes turbocharged with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics processor with 128MB of DDR SDRAM. With cutting-edge graphics technologies, the Mobility Radeon 9700 features programmable pixel and vertex shading for lighting and shadow effects -- dramatically enhancing all aspects of your visual experience in every application.
Wait, wait, wait, wait! Hold on! You call a GPU connected at AGP 4x speeds "cutting-edge"?! What year are you living in? "She's still stuck in 1985!"
Video and graphics support
* ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics processor with AGP 4X support and 128MB of DDR SDRAM video memory
o Dual-link DVI functionality
o Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports up to 1440 x 960 pixels on the built-in display and up to 2560 x 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colours(6)
* DVI output port
* VGA output using included DVI to VGA adapter
* S-video output port
* Composite video output using included S-video to composite adapter
Woah... so you're telling me that I can attach an external display and actually get decent graphics?! No, wait, they're just hyping the millions of colours, which we've had since 1986.
Processor and Memory
* 1.67GHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine, 512K SRAM on-chip L2 cache, 167MHz system bus
* 512MB (single SO-DIMM) of PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM running at 333MHz; two SO-DIMM slots; support for up to 2GB
Ok, so why is there DDR2 in the PowerBook if it's the same speed as the old DDR?!
Just to prove that I didn't make all this stuff up, here is the information page on the PowerBook 15". The first URL is the "Hardware" page, the second is their marketecture page.
Remind me again why someone who wants to keep anything personal/may-get-you-arrested would use Windows? Oh wait, I just answered my own question! (They don't, didn't you get it?)
Great! Now they'll finally be able to tell us what kind of virus has infected the middle east.
Satire daily reports "Scientists hope to be able to use this new form of identification to identify what, and where the virus -code named 'George W. Bush'- came from, and what the best solution is..."
Hey NSA, here's something for your surveillance scrap book! Tap this! Holds up middle finger
Hey, is Dennis Zhidkov the only person alive at that company? Seriously, everywhere I look, it's Dennis this, Dennis that. I'm beginning to think that he is just a law suit loving Ex-Russian turned corporate American. Hey Dennis, if you ever read this, FREE SPEECH is allowed in America, so get used to being under fire. Also, I'm glad I don't buy games for my PC, because I wouldn't want his crap infesting it. When I do a 'ps ax' I want to be able to look down the list of processes and be sure of what each and every single one is doing. Just another reason why I don't run Windows. Hey Dennis, if you ever get the chance to come up to Canada, you can see how normal, non-law suit crazy people live.
Google just needs to hire Chuck Norris to take care of the problem. Once the Government finds out that Google is being represented by someone who punches papers till they fuse together, instead of using a paper clip, I'm sure they'll drop the charges.
In the court room:
Govn't Lawyer: Chuck Norris cannot deture our desire to get google's logs.
Enter Chuck Norris
Chuck Norris: I'm here!
Govn't Lawyer: Chuck Norris, you cannot intimidate us! We're the US Government!
Chuck Norris: Hey, nice briefcase you've got there, can I see it for a minute?
Govn't Lawyer: Well I don't see any problem with that, here you go. *Passes briefcase to Chuck Norris*
Chuck Norris: Hey, thanks. *Flattens briefcase into a pancake with his pinky finger*
Govn't Lawyer:*Narrows eyes* You're paying for that!
Chuck Norris: Only if you drop the case against google, or, feel the power of my mighty fist!
Govn't Lawyer: No, we wont drop the case.
Judge: Ok, I've seen enough. *bangs gavel* Case dismissed.
Govn't Lawyer:*Gaping mouth*
Chuck Norris: You might wanna pick that up off the floor on your way out.
Well, Apple did say that they wouldn't prevent Windows users from using that operating system on Macs. Then again, they didn't say it'd be easy. Anyway, since when does Microsoft include drivers with Windows for Macintosh hardware? Now I know why they used EFI instead of BIOS.
*Ice Wewe slides his block of copper into the closet, and waits until it appriciates in value.* Hey, that's actually a good reason for hanging on to all those old PCs and networking gear you have. In 2050, assuming you're still alive then, you can sell it for your retirement fund. ^.^
Haha. You have no idea how ****ing hard it is to replace anything in an iBook. To replace anything in a normal iBook takes about an hour, and that's just to get in! Imagine if you had to replace something on this, this piece of crap. It'd take forever, assuming it's even possible. Hey, you guys out there who are using flash lights to read your iBook screen, you need a new backlight display cable. That took me 5 hours to replace with help from a friend, and that was my third time in an iBook, so we weren't screwing around, we know what we're doing. I must say, I'm not at all happy with iBooks. Firstly, my harddrive breaks after a year and a half of gentle use. That took 4+ hours to replace. Next my display backlight cable went out, that cost about $50 CDN to replace, and that took me 4+ hours. Now, my new 1 1/2 year old Fujitsu HDD has about a GB of bad blocks. It was working fine, I loaned it to a friend for 2 weeks, I get it back and it's got all these bad blocks on it! I'm so tired of iBooks I went out and bought myself a nice shiny 15" PowerBook. I'm never, ever, ever, gettin another iBook. BTW, this product sucks. If you want something with a touch screen from Apple, pick up a Newton
When I went and got a tour of JPL, from a staff member, not a tour guide, I looked in on their server clusters, they were running Fedora Core 4 smp. Now, perhaps this is just an isolated case, but everywhere I looked, there were computer's running Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows. When we got a tour of the main control room, where they had terminals displaying the data being received from the space probes/landers/craft, they were running linux. Therefore, I tend to doubt whoever said that the linux kernel wasn't 'stable' enough for their purposes. Perhaps they're just trying to keep Microsoft happy, because when I was there, it [Windows] certainly wasn't the majority OS.
Sure, Xcode could do with a little bit of work to add features missing, but I truely find Cocoa a dream to work with. One year ago I only developed for the web, then I bought a Mac and was introduced to Cocoa by a friend. I havent looked back since, and have produced several 'scratch the itch' applications that otherwise wouldnt have been made.
Xcode sucks, not the language. so, I have to disagree with both gentlemen.
I know what you mean. I used to run Gnome too, but then I discovered IceWM. The reason I like IceWM is that it has no fancy features and it just works. Memory isn't really a problem for me, having 1.5GB, although that may seem small to you, it works well for me. I find now, that when I go onto a KDE/Gnome machine, I find myself wondering why, with 512MB ram, someone decides to use KDE or Gnome. I mean, if you weren't using that RAM for a fancy window manager, heck, you might be able to compile reasonably fast. Shall we start a Gnome vs. IceWM/Xfce war? Trolling time!
If I were you, I'd keep my eyes out for a Windows logo on that web site. *cough*kickbacks*cough* From my experience, if Microsoft doesn't have more bugs, then their software sure is shitty. I mean, FireFox is open source, IE is not. Who is more secure, doesn't crash as much, and has nifty plug-ins? If you said IE, you're living in the past. Sure, Open Source is going to have more bugs, it's hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people contributing code. Of course not all of them are going to get everything perfect. Now compare how many people Microsoft has working on bugs. A few thousand at best. Now you see the reality of this. Linux is going to have more bugs simply because it has more software. Microsoft is going to take longer to patch their bugs because they only have a fraction of the people working on it.
This is nothing new. For years now people have being doing advertising online, this guy just invented a new way of doing advertising. No that anyone would see the ad's themselves, they're only one freaking pixel. I've got a great idea, sell one square millimeter of your body for $10. The advertiser's can pay to have their ad tatooed on your body, and then you can stand half naked in Time Square while people try to figure out what the hell you're supposed to be. Or, better yet, train your dog to shit letters and graphics. Now that's a good money maker... for the cop giving you the ticket.
Me too! *Puts crackberry behind back* No really... *takes ear buds out of ears* I swear I can! *turns off PSP* Just give me a chance *hangs up on cell phone*
Oh, I admit it, I'm seriously addicted. I am the ghost of gadgetless past...
This coming from the guy that will have no problem with sales. (Hey intel, take a hint, you don't win every battle you set out to. You're gonna be making Mac chips for crying out loud, quite being such a pain over this silly project. I'm surprised that you actually think people in North America are gonna give a flip about wether it's intel or AMD. Heck, all they care is that they're getting a $200 laptop!
Next week: Steve Jobs offers OSX to the project, again.

Fry: Aww man.
Camera on Nichelle Nichols
George Takei: With pleasure. You see, the show was banned after the Star Trek Wars.
Zap: You mean the vast migration of Star Wars Fans?
Nichelle Nichols: No, that was the Star Wars Trek.
Ahem... Mandriva does.

Microsoft Employee: Ok kid, that'll be $99 for the replacement heat-sync.
Billy: But you said this was covered under warrenty!
Microsoft Employee: No, your warrenty was void when I found that piece of foil on the thermal gel...
Ok everyone, say this with me... "Lawsuit!"
Another sleezy business practice by Microsoft to deprive their loyal customers. Wait a second... this isn't Microsoft! Apple, you had me fooled!
Just a note, for those of you who don't know. I have a 1440 x 960 PowerBook, which was released in the later half of 2005.

Hey Intel, if you must know, the reason I dumped my P4 3Ghz for an AMD64 3200+ (2Ghz) is because AMD has karma, look it up sometime.
