When software maker points out piracy here, we expect people to go to jail and some actually do. That's why you are willing to shell out the dough.

My friends in China do not expect to pay for software and I have been to one of their software shop with "custom" printed CD with software and often, keygen/serial also inside. In a country whose standard of living is no-where near the US, you can't expect anyone to pay the same US money for something that's easily replicable.

And since they don't expect to pay for anything, choosing Windows/Linux is just a choice of what's easiest to use. Since Windows has large user base and software availability (which are also "free"), that's what they choose. The conclusion is that besides few rich personal/business user, you just can't make money selling software to the mass in China as long as people don't expect to pay for it and government not willing to enforce any law/trade agreement (except for few show cases to satisfy the west). While the post-development cost for software is next to nothing, the cost of making the software is passed on to us, citizens of country that actually respect copyright. And since I respect the copyright of other's work, I use Linux and FOSS.

  12. we need universal health on Massachusetts Makes Health Insurance Mandatory · · Score: 2, Interesting

The law should mandate health insurance like it does car insurance. It's not necessarily for the protection of the driver but for other drivers on the road. I absolute don't buy the argument that people should be free to make choices, including NOT buying health insurance. Just like you are not free to drive uninsured, we should not be free to go about without health insurance because when we don't go see the doctor, who knows what potentially contagious disease we are carrying? How can we fight SARS and bird flu when many won't go to doctors simply because they can't afford it? I think it's a wise way to spend my taxes to help other people in need even when a small portion of them are "free-loader" of the society. At least people can go to the doctor when they begin to feel sick. The alternative is that they won't go to the doctor until it's too late and cost even MORE of my taxes or spread some uncontrollable disease in my community. Then there is the collective bargaining power of the government to hospital and drug companies which will also drive down the cost of medical service.

  14. Don't have to agree with MM to find google EVIL... on Google Protects Healthcare From Michael Moore · · Score: 1

Michael Moore is by no mean objective, but he's a patriot. He's a patriot in the sense that he loves the American people but not necessarily the mega corporation. Yes, _Sicko_ cherry picks facts, but it's a nicely put together as a provocative piece. Compare to F911, which I think is a piece of crap, I feel as if MM has eaten a piece of humble pie. The 911 worker going to Cuba thing might be over the top, considering that Cuba ranked 39 in the same list that ranked USA 37 (not something to be proud of). However, I think most viewer recognize that it's a satirical stun and hey, if this country won't treat its hero, we ought to find some way to do it, right?. In Sicko, instead of yelling fuck the insurance industry as he did to NRA and Bush, he's calmly saying, look, there are other countries that do things differently, and they are looking pretty good. I think his health care proposal too naive, but I came out the theater feeling that we should at least not let profit-making insurance industry dominate the debate. When it comes to life-altering (note: not necessarily threatening, such as losing a finger...) situation, I don't think we should let for-profit corporation controls everything. Anyway, for google to control information for the benefit of corporate friends is just down right EVIL
