I don't think you are grasping the whole picture, and your post is modded up by the same kind of people who complain that MJ out-twittered Iran for a little while. Do you believe that we are really incapable of being concerned about multiple topics at once? I am, of course, way more concerned for the people in Iran and the conflict that is happening there than I am about MJ's death - but did I search Google after my friend came by my desk that afternoon and said, "Michael Jackson died!" - of course I did! Does that mean I don't care about the coup in Honduras or the sham trial in Burma, or about Obama's new healthcare plans? No. And frankly, that's stupid to even suggest.

You see, those other things I listed are not surprise, immediate events. Those things are not likely to have caused millions upon millions of people with internet access to suddenly, at the same time, wonder, "is that true?" I'll let you finish thinking about only this post while I go check out some pr0n, read my email, and browse some other news headlines.

Maybe your elected officials aren't always doing what you want them to because there are definite flaws in the western dollarocracies--sorry, democracies (yes, money really runs them more than votes do), but at least you're not being gunned down in the street just because you're standing out there saying you think the election was rigged.

What's the point of blocking Hulu's ads? They last no more than 30s, and you have to wait for that time anyway... There's a little timer that tells when your show is gonna be back, so just get up and get a drink. Sometimes I think people block ads just to be able to. You're not gaining anything, and you're giving Hulu a reason to no longer be free. If Hulu cannot generate some stream of revenue through selling ads, just how the heck do you expect them to continue to provide you the content you're there to see? Or do you expect the content should just be free for everyone? Really, I'm trying to understand the point...

Seriously, I can wait for my fix. Not to mention the fact that they just posted Season 4 of Stargate SG1 - now Seasons 1-4 are all available whenever I want them. Hulu is the best thing to happen to television since color.

I do agree that it's a very fine line to balance between giving authorities the ability to locate and use evidence of a crime, while maintaining a reasonable right to privacy.

I guess my main point is that I think it's foolhardy to give someone a container, ask work to be done on it which involves at least some of the contents of that container, and then expect the worker working with those contents to ONLY be legally capable of seeing certain parts of those contents. The worker had to work with SOME files. He also saw other files which were equally unsecured.

But whichever side of the fence you fall on, you have to agree the guy was a complete idiot for giving his computer to ANYONE when he knew it contained criminal files. Whether or not you should be able to expect privacy of those files in this case, to actually do so in practice is just idiocy.

I have to say, though - when I come to slashdot, I'm not really looking for quality journalism. The story is just the starting point for the conversation here.

  24. Re:Funny but true.... on Microsoft Asks Open Source Not to Focus On Price · · Score: 3, Insightful

Generally, your best bet for total cost of ownership is a mid-sized vendor. A midsized vendor is too small to pull the shenanigans you will find a Microsoft pulling, but they are big enough to get you a quality product. They are in the business of keeping you happy, and they can be asked to implement custom solutions in their proprietary software - usually a lot faster and cheaper than you could on your own by hiring in skilled developers to enhance the open source software. Open source is an interesting alternative to the giants like Microsoft, but for the mid-range or more niche software you're better off a) writing it all yourself or b) getting a mid-sized vendor you can push around. But in the end, it's like my dad always said - there are always 2 sides to every story and usually neither of them is right. /. users are very Open Source biased, so you'll hear a lot more support for it on this forum. However, they are usually just as wrong about their hatred of a Microsoft or 3rd Party solution as those who disparage the Open Source solution. Both have their places, and both have their advantages and disadvantages, and you have to look at each situation and each business to see which is the right way to go.
