  1. Re:A new UI? on A Close(r) Look At OLPC Human Interface Guidelines · · Score: 0

Haven't we seen Apple patent submissions for trackpads of a similar nature? Again, it all just doesn't fit my view of "revolutionary" (not that I don't think it has the potential to be cool, I guess we'll see).

  2. A new UI? on A Close(r) Look At OLPC Human Interface Guidelines · · Score: 0, Insightful

Perhaps I missed it, but is there a new type of keyboard or trackpad or input device for this project? If I still point with a mouse and type with a keyboard, it's not revolutionary. They may have organized a few things better, but let's look for something more intuitive to call "revolutionary". My two cents that no one will read because of my damned karma.

  8. Close-minded /. users on How Ray Ozzie is Changing Microsoft · · Score: -1, Flamebait

I find it amazing how close-minded some of you self-ascribed technologists are being. Yes, I understand you want all the power under the sun and that you want to control everything, but let's be honest...you don't, can't, and in many cases shouldn't.

I'm a huge geek, but personally I don't care where I run MS Office from. I'd rather run it from the MS Servers, so it's always up to date and I don't have to download the patches. Rather than pay the $350-$500 for new version every 3 years I'd rather pay $60-100 bucks a year for progressively updated software. Yeah, I know, you don't pay for your software. I care, really. I also want to store all my files on a secure server somewhere else that I pay for who actually backs up their data. Just because I'm a geek and know I should be backing up my data doesn't mean I actually do.

I want to access all my software and files from any Internet-enabled device I own, anywhere I am. Maybe I could do that now if I were really interested in setting that up, but guess what, I'm not. I have better things to spend my money and time on. Subscription services could EASILY solve this for everyone.

Bandwidth? If you want to grandstand something, grandstand about that, not subscription services. We're getting to the point where Internet access really should be as reliable and accessible as a utility like electricity. The fact that it's not that robust in the US is because of 1)telecoms and 2) neglegent legislation.

Some applications will probably (but who knows, really) move off the desktop. Yeah, got it. Not everyone uses those apps. I do graphics, but I think eventually even some of that will move.

    Open your minds.
