After reading all the paranoid posts for the topic, I have to throw something out there that may get flamed but I don't really care.
Firstly, so what if China is using linux, its just another organization/government which a good part of the population doesn't like using our beloved OS. Its like Microsoft using Linux, even if they do add security holes/backdoors the peer review process will find those nasty hacks.
And even if they do succeed in getting those backdoors in, it isn't like Linux is the only open-source system out there. There's the BSD variants, and we could always compile a previous kernel and discard the modifications/patches which China has added.
And besides, I highly doubt the Chinese Duma is stupid enough to even try to begin doing something like that, which could, and will inevitably lead to the very high-tempered US finishing off the conflict.
I can already see it now:
"CHINA ESPIONAGE IN THE US ! CONGRESS PASSES AN ULTIMATUM FOR CHINA TO SEND ALL BACKDOORS TO THE US"
The ultimatum, of course being a stall for the US to mobilize its forces, call in the reserves and ask help or dissolve the Security Council.
However, I doubt we have much to worry about, with China being the last bastion of Communism in the world, it is also beginning to fall apart. With the Tiennamen Square massacre, and rising democratic movements, I give communism to last two, or three more generations before the old guard is gone and change ushers in.
In any case, we also have to remember that Linux is really a state of mind. Using a OS which is open source, and the reason why Linux is so big is because its the first successful open source system.
So people relax, lets go back to playing Quake3, and if the worst does happen, I think the US has more nukes than the Communists do ; )
Can somebody tell me the usefulness of a 'disposable cell phone' ?
This is a very bad idea because this anonymity afforded by these phones allow it to be used for not very nice tasks, and do I even have to mention how un-enviromentally sound this is ?
Whatever the case, I'm happy with my Nokia 6188, these disposables probably don't come with all the nice features that real cells do, text messaging, call display, call waiting, address book, vibrator option, and of course the games : ).
As a web developer, I've used both ASP-IIS and Perl/PHP-Apache and as much as you anti MS people would hate to hear it, IIS isn't really all that bad.
However, that does not make IIS better than Apache imho. A few of the things that bug me with IIS is the VBScript language (Face it people BASIC on any OS sucks). There isn't any STDOUT/STDERR basic handles, its almost impossible to begin doing low level server stuff w/o paying $150 for a seperate module which in the end is very very irritating to clients who wan to know why their paying an extra $400 for extra modules. I tell them its because their running IIS, use Apache on Solaris/Linux and it'd be much cheaper (and stable.)
But, I find that its much better to take everything with a grain of salt and move on, I need money to live so I'll work on whatever contract pays the highest, IIS, Apache, Java, Netscape, whatever -- If it pays well, then I'll do it.
But if it was up to me, then Apache/PHP Please : )
Firstly, I never said linux sucks. I use linux a lot and do stuff like pack up 486 linux boxes with daemons and services up the ass. And as a testament to linux stability and efficency, it runs great.
I'm just saying a FUD campaign on NT is stupid and retarded. I won't complain if its on your homepage, but a so called "News For Nerds, Stuff that Matters" news website should not post it.
Also, stories on/. have pretty much degraded into insane linux/open source-zealotry, an intense amd-zealotry.
Just cuz i like linux doesn't mean i have the right to cram it down other people throat's and tell htem that its good for them.
Okay, explain to me how this makes Windows NT a bad OS ? (Apart from the obvious). Of course if you jack up and load the fucker with lots of apps, it'll take forever to reboot, the same with linux and all other os's.
Hell, do you even realize how long it takes to fsck and parallelize drives upward of 20gig on a linux box ???. And if the name server is down, sendmail takes forever until it times out to take the/etc/hosts name.
Like I said, stupid, retarded, and it only serves as to satisfy all those rabid NT-haters out there.
This may be flamebait, but i've generally noticed that/. is very underdog-ish, and hates mainstream thought.. but anyway : )
There's a big reason why the United States should BE represented. Quite frankly its because so much of the activity and traffic on the 'net is located in North America. (I may be Canadian, but basically what's good for ol' U.S of A is good for us as well).
If other nations are allowed a much more powerful say in certain topics which go against Corporate America®, then a lot of things can happen which may bring down ICANN itself as the regulator of addresses.
Corporate America could start pressuring people (if you know what I mean)®, Some all-too-ambitious Senator may start tossing around a bill which starts to degrade access to servers located in the US, etc etc etc.. in other words it *could* get ugly.
Or The ICANN could go the way of the 'League of Nations' with no American Support both political and coporate-wise.
And even in the UN, they only havea select few countires in the security council. Why ? Because the decisions made there will have to be enforced by one or a few of the countries there, if there are lots of 'micro-countries' making decisions in the SC which it has no way or power of enforcing, then the SC will have been made useless.
I'm not Pro-US, hell I'm Canadian, but we must still remember NOT to underestimate the power and authority of the last remaining superpower in the world.
I'll get off the soapbox now and put my oatmeal-brain to bed.
Bullshit, all systems are insecure relatively, there have been cracked *nix sites as well and you don't see linux zealots saying "gee, I guess they didn't download those new RPM's ! OPEN SOURCE ! OPEN SOURCE !! GRRRRRR *slobbber*"
Intel and AMD are going to soon milk the x86 design for all its worth, the moment either of them comes out with a true 64bit chip, I'll open my checkbook, otherwise I'll keep the PII 333 I bought a year ago...
FYI, the rocket in Q3Arena DOES do splash damage, just not enough to kill somebody with 2 or 3 near hits. That would make it too easy for campers, and newbies.
And instead of getting 'someone' to rewrite Quake with the Q3 engine (somebodly kindly explain to me how the hell this can happen ?) why don't you just turn down your dumb gamma support and get that dark 'medieval' look. : P
As preious posts have noted, it does come down to personal preference and also I think the area in which you live in since events/friends partly dictate what you listen to as well.
Nowadays, when I'm coding I love listening to "trance", club or house mixes, or just plain old techno. I just feel that Rock and Pop have pretty much outlived its welcome and has gotten very, very stale. After listening to the same thing over and over again, you really do need a break.
Another thing about techno or trance music is that since its rooted in raving (15+ hour long dances), it does in a way help you keep up and wanting to move in some manner. OTOH, I may have just popped too much E ; )
Anyway, if anybody wants to go give this genre a try, I suggest:
Paul Van Dyk (almost everything)
Amokk (especially "666")
The Crystal Method
ATB (if "9pm" doesn't get you going, nothing will)
Fatboy Slim House Mixes
Ian Ossia
Da Klubb Kings
John Debo
John Wink
and of couse, then Vengaboys ; )
As a quick note, try to listen to the originals before the listening to the remixes, IMHO there are some horrible remixes out there.
oh yeah -- Asimov's Foundation series is one hell of a read. One of the best sci-fi series's I've read in my life.
If your a Sci-Fi Fan, you MUST read these series: o 2001 Series (Clarke) o Foundation Series (Asimov) o Robot Series (Asimov) o Lord of the Rings Series (Asimov)
Not that I'm bitching about all the ppl mirroring the demo, but weren't we NOT supposed to re-distribute this according to their EULA ?
Economically it was a capitalist democracy, however, politically it was a dictatorship .. literally a cult of a figure.
Actuall Mao didn't send the intellectuals to the fields, he sent them to their graves.
If you think the Holocaust was bad, you haven't seen photos or read about the USSR under Stalin and Lenin, or China under Mao.
Funny how people also mention that Linux is the purest sense of Communism, while the Internet is the purest form of democracy.
After reading all the paranoid posts for the topic, I have to throw something out there that may get flamed but I don't really care.

Try Playing Half Life, great graphics, good story, less filling.

/. has gotten to the point of where its not "News" at all, its biased, unobjective fodder for the linux zealot.

Sure, the fact that its not beating down Microsoft with its righteous opensource/linux bat, Roblimo and the gang won't offer and commentary or quips.
Like I've said before,
ye gads, get an Honda or Toyota, much more reliable and better trimmings than *any* domestic car.
