  1. 2 anecdotes on Your Worst IT Workshop? · · Score: 1

I recently had to take an elective in my CS graduate program. Being a seasoned Java professional, I figured a 500-level JAVA class would be a breeze. Boy was I wrong. The instructor was one of these old-school CS purists who HATED Java and loved C++. Each lecture was about how to do some low-level task in Java, and why C++ was so much better for that task (duh). He broke just about every standard Java coding convention that the compiler would allow. Multiple classes per file, ignoring the package structure. Each class was named like: "Class_ptr_adptr" (a class for a pointer adapter [wha???]), methods were named: "func_crt_inst()" (function create instance). And he REFUSED to call them "methods", in favor of "functions". I have no idea why some would deliberately choose to teach an entire course on Java if they hate it so much. Also, when i was an undergrad (c1996), I had a MIS course where the prof was trying to exmplain the meaning of a URL, say "www.company.com". She drew on the board a venn-like diagram, three circles, each one enclosing the next smaller, resembling a bull's eye. In the outermost, she wrote "www", then "company" and "com" in each of the inner 2 and explained "So www stands for th entire world wide web, "company" is for the company you are trying to reach, and "com" means "communicate".

I have to agree here. I work for a big 'ol boring publishing company as a software engineer. It's not the "sexiest" place to work. No, there's no free sushi in the caf. But, they pay me slightly above market, they have a liberal telecommute policy, generous time-off, have great health benefits. I sometimes think about sending my resume to Google, but then i think - do i really want to be part of that elitist techno-snob culture? (I have a degree from a state college woud they even consider me in the first place???) And what am I really getting for it - looooong hours and the ability to _tell_ people i work for google. That's really all it is. I mean, just how much more do non-managers make at google than other companies?
I think I'll take my nice work/life balance with a pretty darn good, although not earth-shattering, salary.

Can't be said enough. There is irrefutable evidence that we are going to destroy the atmosphere, which in turn will destroy the planet. Gore has just summed it all up nicely for the layperson to understand. The most troubling thing (ya know, besides the imminent end of the world) is that the oil, auto, and other capitalist lobbies goddamn well know it - and instead of doing the right thing; innovating for leaner, cleaner products, they fud the hell out of it in the interests of padding their already astronomical bonuses.

If I was in their position, of course I'd recruit heavily at those schools. You know that someone from a school like that is smart. But it's very wrong to assume that someone that comes from a lesser known shcool isn't smart. And it's downright insane to start asking someone with great professional experience about their education. I'm probably the most succesful person to ever come out of my college's 2nd rate cs program. I started out at the very bottom with a crappy underpaid development job and worked my a$$ off to get where I am. I had to becasue I didn't have that big name education to wear as a badge. If I went to an interview and some snooty elitist started giving trouble about going to 'state u' now that i have almost 10 years experience, i'd probably just get up and walk out. PS - to the Clemson guy: Um, I would've punched that guy right in the face. Clemson is a nationally recognized research university. What the hell do they want you to say? What a bunch of garbage.

I interviewed at Direct Revenue about 18 months ago. It's funny to hear thier version of what they do - they simply call it "contextual ad-based marketing". The whole place seemed very sketchy and unprofessional. When the sketchy manager walked me past the group he called "forensic computing" - I instantly knew I was in a spyware factory. I met with some other sweaty, twitchy geek who asked me to solve some algorithmic/data-structure type problem. He was very persistent and specific - harping on the minor details. After I got out of there, I realized he was actually tring to get ideas for a problem he was working on - not tech-ing me for the position. Told the equally shady recruiter to f-off & turned them down for another offer. Glad I did it, but I'm shocked that they are the focus of an article on BW. Surprised they're even still around...

Agree 100%. Half the time (like so many others) i don't even RTFA. The very existence of the acronym "RTFA" shows how valued the discussions are.
