well they wouldn't want to allow P2P downloading because Vista likes to actively stop people from using these things. If you thought that you told your computer what to do you are dead wrong. On the forum I use most one member encountered a fairly interesting problem, being that Vista was checking what he was downloading and when something seemed like it might not be legal they had his interent connection stopped... lovely.
I would think that the service will be pretty good, the service for the DS is very good (although I wish it would be faster at finding opponents). I also think that the download of games will be a really big selling point, getting old classic games for about £2 would mean that for a party I could get about 5 of the classic fun multiplayer games (inc. Goldeneye and Super Smash Brothers, of course)
it might just be that I don't really know a lot about the american system for libraries, but don't your universities have their own library? If I was trying to do real research I'd be in our massive library full of academic books and journals, the public libraries where kids might go are pretty much useless for academic work...
I would defend myspace on this front as well as it might be the first time children come into contact with people who have different views and debate and interest is always good. Who knows it might start a life time of interest in a subject.
good point, it would disadvantage poorer people unfairly. You also come close to one other point that I thought when I read the article, why let children use a computer on their own in their own house but not in a public place... when was the last time you ever heard of a peadophile convincing a child to get naked on a web cam in a library?
If parents can't be bothered to take an interest in their children (which the House seems to think that they can't) then why not let someone else prevent this - assuming of course that this is ever a serious issue anyway; I remain convinced that it is just a very rare exception.
I don't want to insult the person but saying that 8 is something that will not be needed seems very short sighted. People were saying only a few years ago "1GB is too big for a hard-drive"... Never under estimate the increasing need for power in computers, even for home users
and if you could find out your neighbours MAC then you could spoof it and use it again : )
I wonder if you could automate something to try a MAC and if that results in being re-directed try another... might take some time though, but if it saves you £20 a month then it could be good
hm, wouldn't you want your kids to learn how to use a credit card reponsibly? I stopped having cash with me ages ago. This just makes the education more relevant
I would be amazed if it was as high as 5% too, although when I looked at TFA if seemed to be saying that it was infact 5% of people who have "the news" (whatever that is) as their primary topic. I have a blog which is exclusively about current affairs, does that make me a journalist?... I also have a blog which is about linux and pre-1662 hammared silver coins... does that make me a nerd?
I don't thend to think that this is a "slashvertizement", and even if it was that wouldn't be a problem. We are really here to be on the cutting edge, if I wanted a new laptop I'd want to know what is the latest and maybe greatest linux laptops. This just makes you aware of what you might want to buy but doesn't really do it in such a way that says that you should only look at this. Also the review element is clearly different from an advert... when was the last time you saw an ad and it said "it is a bit expensive..." (aside from maybe stella)
just shy of $1500 doesn't seem that high, it's only £812, which is pretty cheep really, although as they mention in the article, the premium is mainly for the lack of weight in the system. Although if the XP model doesn't cost any more there is also be a MS premium built in, which would be a shame - because everyone will want FC5 ; )
"Is it worse than burning alive and suffocating in your office building just because you had the audacity to go to work that day?"
No it isn't, although I never said it was. I hope that this is just a troll and that you don't honestly think that it can ever be ok to do this to someone who *might* have done something wrong. I'm for harsh punishment for crimes as much as the next guy, especially murder, but I would only ever accept that any punishment could be ok if it had been proved beyond all reasonable doubt to a jury of their peers - without that they'd as good be dragging people off the street and beating the living hell out of them; it's about as wrong.
Further if you really care about people who have been killed by terrorists then you wouldn't let their names be discraced by these actions. Not only that but do you really think you could trust the information? I'd tell you I was Bin Laden to stop something like this, but I'm not, I know nothing of interest to anyone about terrorism (and if I did I'd report it myself).
Finally if someone took me away from my family for years and tortured me for crimes I have not committed, nor been tried for, I'd be pissed off - really pissed off. I'm a Christian and would try to forgive even the people who did that (even if I couldn't there's "thou shalt not kill")... but what if someone thought that maybe getting even could be ok in their ethics? more terrorism, and you can bet your arse that more people would want to get even than those who would forgive it.
as far as I know this is often called the Spanish water torture, I've heard that it is one of the worst things that you can do to someone because it cause the cloth to go into the throat and when it is removed it causes imense pain, not only that but you also get the feeling of drowning and suffocation. I wonder how (if this happened... I can't say either way) anyone in the CIA can claim to be civilised people at all. I would expect this behavious from the worst punishment in the Middle-Ages, not in a Western "Liberal" "democracy"
I agree with you completely and as someone who has lost a game or two to losing the licence key but still having the cd I can say that it really annoys me, and I wish that you were right that this causes discontent with the public and fanboys... but it doesn't, M$ was voted Britian's most trusted brand the other day. People are fools, unfortunately.
I understand that some people like getting their patches every first tuesday of the month, but why force everyone to wait until the 8th. Why not let those people who are willing to risk the very small possibility of a problem caused by the patch but don't want to take the serious risk of their system getting cained by some black hat in China get the patch when they want it?... especially home users for whom a patch would pose very little problem even if it was badly written
mine is already excellent, so any I get just goes gets written off and it makes no difference to me, I have said previously that a diminishing rate of karma over time would be better, but alas no one has taken up the idea, so for the time being it makes nop difference
interesting post, but I would just mention that the Mirror is a Labour paper, infact I read the Telegraph and Private eye. I also think that wrongful convictions are pretty rare in cases of theft because pretty much the only time you get people for it is when you catch them red handed... although I know that my opinions are somewhat controversial (and I'm not even taxi driver, or old!)
we just always pay more for everything, still, minimum wage is over £5 an hour (which I think is fairly high in world terms) and a house will set you back at least £200,000 (although often over £400,000) pretty much anywhere south of the wash... so we get screwed for everything : )
I actaully installed IE7 last night, I'd been impressed with how it sounded but I never boot into windows so I had to make a special effort to get it, it is also the first thing I've installed in ages which wasn't free (in both senses), and I was amazed at the licence terms; it might just be that I'm not used to seeing them but on IE7 it was so restrictive about what you could do and they kept the right to do anything, including (if I remember right) the ability to change the contract without telling you about it. It actually said that you should re-read the agreement regularly because they might change it at any time, needless to say I won't be installing a final version of it.
As a browser it was ok, nothing really special but not too bad.
meh, might as well reply to my ow post and avoid karma whoring (I don't really need it anyway) here's the link to the opera product page that has more detail about it... http://www.opera.com/products/devices/nintendo/
I went on Opera's site last night and was looking at the stuff they have on the DS browser, it seems really interesting, like the handwritting tool and the ability to auto-complete ".com" endings. Whilst these might not seem huge they are far better than I was expecting. I just hope that they will have a speedy UK release and that they will put the price at about £10, I'd definately get one then, if it was £20 (which would make it the same proce as brain training) then I might be a bit more reserved... But here's hoping that they do good with it
I was thinking about the virtual boy last night actaully and how it was a shame that the idea seemed to fail and never come back. I know it wasn't perfect but it was a hell of an idea, if people had stuck by it and nintendo had kept working at it and improving then we might have really good virtual reality today (maybe not... but I would like to think so). The first steam boats periodically blew up and killed everyone on board, because people stuck with it the kinks got worked out; comparitavly a little sickness seems hardly worth mentioning
I'll take your word for it that this is the case, I have little experience with how it works, but it seems to me that they could make another goodle, like www.google.com/blind and in this there could be nothing which would impede blind users, so simply a search box at the top right (or where ever it would be best)... surely that would be a really helpful tool to go with this and take no effort at all. But I'm no expert so I might be missing something.

...you're interested I read a rather interesting article about trusted computing the other day ( http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/can-you-trust.html ). He makes some good points.

maybe the ad is interactive so that in the game you can climb up and deface it... or set it on fire?

visual radio, I wonder what it would be like to have pictures along with audio... I can hardly imagine such a thing!
