but really; how can they ever know, because evolution is so slow that you couldn't say that one generation was not a chicken and the next generation was... there will have been millions of years of blur...
nah, direct income tax was brought in in England as a temporary measure to help cover a government shortfall, well over a hundered years later we're still paying it... this stuff happens all the time, governments rarely have true hypothecated taxes; and even if they did I doubt that they'd be legally bound to it
whilst I know that in Oo it takes longer to save than in word (using the respective file formats) I don't care. If we say MS Word takes 1 sec. and Oo takes 5, then word is 5 times faster, but when it comes down to it - it's only 4 seconds once an hour... no consider how long it will take someone to rewrite all the documents when the format they've saved it in ceases to be and because it's closed they're stuck... that'll be a fair few hours... so really, Oo is about 8 million times faster because the ODF format won't ever just be "stopped" without giving people the option to keep it on (because it's open source!)
One thing people never mention is when God ordered the death of someone for working on a sunday, now I know I don't have a right to challenge Him; but surely God is more important than a videogame, especially in a country where most people are active in their faith... why did no one say "that kid at columbine had read the bible, people were killed in the bible, it must be the bible's fault, ban the bible" instead they blame Manson (even though they weren't fans anyway).
Video games are on the whole no more violent than the bible, they often contain messages of hope or the idea of good winning... I always fail to see why people always blame games
I've got a sheet of metal in my wallet which works well to stop the RFID from working through it... although it might be bit more effort I could just wrap it in tinfoil; but the metal sheet works just as well
did nintendo rip-off the mario platform? did they rip off the zelda games? besides what is so good about these series is that they continue to be revolutionary - doing new things in new ways and pretty much always being excellent. Look at Zelda:OoT that was a fantastic revolution for zelda games
I have to disagree with you about the "different space bit". For me it is. The Wii is in the space of "interesting innovative gaming which is accessable for users who don't currently play games and yet has enough flexability and depth to keep hard-core gamers comming back for more - with downloadable content to get all the retro gamers into the fold too"... That seems like a pretty different place to "we are expensive; but hell, you're idiots and you'll buy anything - even if its $600"
I've had loads of different games machines over the years and with the exception of the Amega 500 (which was when i was like 6 and I was also pretty much that excited about my transformer and a toy car aswell) I don't think I've ever wanted games machine
you should look into the work on pressure groups in the UK by Wynn Grant. He's done a lot of stuff about the insider/outsider distinction in pressure groups which is interesting and applicable here. Outsider groups are often thought of as being less succesful, but then some of these ideas are being challenged because they are seeming to work periodically. I personally don't like outsider stratergies because it makes us (as open source proponents) look like nut-jobs... but I guess if people don't know that there rights are being eroded then they won't do anything about it... so maybe we should support them?
well the website has already gone. One thing which I find with all this though is that you should just put it up anonymously on some often checked bbs or newsgroup or something. It is really stupid tha companies think that the danger of hacking comes from people who publically state security hole and not the people who stay very quiet and use them... some mistake?
I see it every year -- some kid takes over pop's huge business because the old man had a heart attack. The kid (usually in his 30s or 40s) drives the business into the ground and below within 2 years
Which is ironically exactly what happened to my dad's business - altohugh to be fair I wasn't involved so it wasn't me making any mistakes. Customers can be a wii (get it?) bit fickle about what they buy although I do think that an amount of brand loyalty exists. Sony has quite a bit of brand loyalty so I would expect what was said to hold true about the "we've sold 5 million anyway"; the thing is, and where your point is right on the money, is that this isn't enough to keep the company up and one bad gen of consoles can be enough to finish off a company
this suit was manifestly stupid. What he was claiming was that because someone is cheeper they are damaging the market. Is this not exactly the same as all companies - they are as cheep as they can afford to be in order to gain business from other companies? did he want to stop that - because it would have. Further, if the case went through and won it would mean that nothing could be given away for free, and possibly that the internet is illegal because it takes away from the market for books on the subject.
If this had won it would have literally killed the economy and taken it back to the dark-ages.
I mostly agree with your post - and you put things well, but:
I think that things like selinux will really help, keeping programmes from doing things which they
are not meant to do. As it grows better and adapts I hope that it could become a bit of a security
"killer-app" - it would offer so much security if it could just say "ey up, why is this IM installing a
browser? better stop that"... and yes, I would like selinux to have a regional accent (and maybe even talk)
I think safety is always going to be hard to push on people who don't seem to understand the importance
of what you are telling them. I'm sure you'll know from your own experience how hard it is to get
even your own parents to take adequate security steps. I don't understand what this virus is doing though
surely you would notice a new browser and remove it? certainly not use it...
As for removing the incentive for people to do this I think it will be hard; there will always be a few
"suckers" and even 1 in a million can be profitable; so it'll be hard to stop it.
morse jokes, ey? I've got 4 or 5 frinds doing that... they all end up a bit weird and hang out in groups late at night proving really random things. why does it matter is P=NP? MORSE is 4 years though isn't it, so you must be just about ready to go insane after 4 years here... it's only been 2 for me and I'm already going mental over it... it doesn't help that I've got exams starting on the 6th and I don't seem to have actually learnt anything this year and don't really seem to be able to get off/. for long enough to start. Dam computers.
I want to make a Beowulf cluster of the energy which is generated from people on/. who post about Beowulf clusters and then form an electric being which will be pre-programmed to know all the old classic/. jokes...
thanks. this is really interesting (I know it might read sarcastically but it's not). I've never really seen the prices all put out in pounds before and I'm shocked that we're paying over £100 more than people in the US. This further highlights what I hate about distribute who make games/films/music. They use the free market to get the stuff made at a really low price in the far east, then put a region code on the stuff so you can't buy it where it is cheapest - blocking the free market. it's even worse with downloadable content because they can deliver it anywhere over the net at the same cost and speed - why won't they let us all buy at the same price?
It's a shame you won't get modded up though... but no one ever reads comments after the first 10 minutes...
as a northerner I was shocked that at uni people actually considered £2 for a pint to be cheap... I'm not used to paying much more than £1.50 for a nice ale. Why do we have such regional pricing?
i would think that the wii will be about £200, maybe that with a game, I think you can get a new 360 for about £300. I know we pay loads more for things though. tut.
but really; how can they ever know, because evolution is so slow that you couldn't say that one generation was not a chicken and the next generation was... there will have been millions of years of blur...
well, the basic rule still holds true about any government's attatiude:
If it moves, tax it,
If it keeps moving regulate it,
If it stops moving; subsidise it

couldn't we just send the spammers a sony music cd? That rootkit would take out their computers at the source instead of just spamming them

if you like that you'll love clamav for Linux machines - although I do find symantec faster for scanning big files.

Sued ... why no FBI raid?
because they'd use the Chewbacca Defense and force the FBI to pay them a million dollars
