    ... as someone who can't reliably touch type ( a rarity for /. I think) I wonder if this would actually help me. Not knowing where they keys are without looking is not my main problem though. My main problem is that I only really use 2 fingers to type which I'm pretty sure this couldn't help (I know, but I learned bad habits and now have just got quite quick at it this way)... so what it should say is that it "could have you typing at the same speed, only this time you'll be able to look at the screen whilst typing, so hopefully there will be fewer errors"

    I agree with you; a system like linux uses does seem to be the best way to keep security... what I don't understand is how MS's system is fundamentally different from what linux does. You need to be what is the functional equivalent of root to install or change settings; but just for normal use I bet it wouldn't ask you that much. For me MS is doing the right thing here

    ...don't get me wrong I won't be moving from linux (which has many other advantages of windows)

    you mean that when they pay up the people actually let them get their files back? you would think any criminal would just delete them, say that they would give them back and then just take off with the money; they are already breaking the law, whats another one added to that? I wonder if this will now work like it should in the perfect open source community though, a bug is found, someone patches it, the new stuff is available within the day, maybe even better than before?

    I can't see a way to download the videos to you HD, at least not on the one that I tried, I like google video because at least then you can download it and not have to constantly stream from the net; also then you can use mplayer.

    So what you are saying is that it will become illegal after it has happened and people reflect on this in court... how can a shop assistant tell if this will be "offencive to the majority"; he might not even have played it... This is the worst kind of law; stupid and applicable all over the place. Does America not have game ratings? here in the UK we have like "18" certificates on some games; if you're not 18 you can't buy it. Then it's a matter of fact.

    ... is do you actually get to see the adult content whilst you get infected? it'd make it so much less annoying.

    I doubt this is really going to turn into anything major though, Star still has security through obscurity. MS office is taking all the hits on the macro virus front.

    I'm actually fairly pleased that they have done this though, it will make people look further and work to make it even more secure

    if you are considering going over to linux you might want to look at fedora, it has some draw-backs (mainly just stuff like it not coming with mp3 support out of the box but fedorafaq helps get stuff like that sorted). I've heard good things about Ubuntu but decided against it because of the slightly weird name.

    back on topic, you do seem to be right, they do need to try and give people a reason to buy Vista but what makes me wonder is what they are going to offer for the version after Vista. MS said that they wanted to have new releases every 4 years... will it end up that the only way you get the updates is to buy a whole new OS... which kinda makes the genuine advantge tool thing seem a bit silly...

    ... maybe because no one would want them to be fully respected, it's not in anyones interest. Nintendo and the retailer want this to happen. People will see one and think "oooh, pre-release, I better get it now" and it builds up even more hype and gets more stories - also it's reminded me that I want one. Cheers all round.

    well, it's not the summer vacation in England (damn exams until 13th of june), but when i read "slacking" I though first and foremost of Slackware; have I been spending too much time on /.

    Which brings me nicely on to my point... isn't /. just a way of slacking off whilst learning just enough to feel like your not wasting you life, backed up with the occasional approval of people you don't know (which is nice)... nice to see the cycle complete.

    ...I don't think optional blu-ray is a good idea. Either the games work on Blu-ray and you will take advantage of that or it won't; in which case you shouldn't have it in their. I can quite easily see this price problem cripling sony - time will tell.

    my god, thats a lot of pages to scroll through... I'm inclined to be a little lazy when buying a case; I only put my feet on it so it doesn't really matter what it looks like. Inside they are all pretty much the same so long as they have enough room, and a construction which will allow you to put your feet on it safely.

    I've had a friend who had a case with really bright blue lights on his computer; all that that meant was we had to stick post-it notes over them when we wanted to watch something to avoid blinding us. I wouldn't want lights on my case...

    I think the real issue here is that it could have been shot by 3 people... I think the Blair witch project only had about 6 people working on it all in all; also even I could make a film (it might not be very good) but with a good idea and a camera anyone can easily make a film; a game takes a lot of specialised knowledge of all sorts of areas which the average person just couldn't do.

    come to think of it I might make a film... I'll open source it : )

    People don't care about Ogg Vorbis. People don't care about DRM if they don't notice it...

    But maybe they should... I've recently learned the error of my ways; too late for my several thousand mp3's though. Always buy music with an eye on the future... I wish I had my music in a high quality ogg file, or even better, flac.

    that's a lot of data... I wonder how many hard drives it would take to keep that much. besides, it would be so much data that it would be really had to sort through it all in order to try and prevent any crimes (I'm assuming this is an anti-terrorist thing - as most crazy freedom reducing laws these days are)... all this would do is after someone had blown themselves up and you knew who they were you could say "so in this instance "flower" meant bomb... but because of the cellular nature of these groups we're no closer to stopping any other attack"

    one problem with SSH is that, at least on my Fedora Core laptop, it allows remote root logon by default... I don't really get why normal users would want this. it is possible to disable just by changing one of the files so that root login = no but i think it should be off by default. The article seems overly complicated so this might be totally unrelated, but i ddn't get it.
