  1. Japanese culture isn't more f'd up than ours... on Internet Suicide Pacts Surge in Japan · · Score: 2, Insightful

it is mostly that the problems are supressed or ignored until it becomes very dangerous. If you look in the media there, there is alot of disturbing stuff that doesn't seem to reflect daily life at all, until it shows up in the news. I saw a post on /. recently about American neoslaves working themselves to death while Europeans enjoyed vacations twice as longs as ours, but what about the three months of rioting in France about the lack of jobs for the youth? Despite the incredible flamewars during the 2000 and 2004 elections, there was no violence. In the US, the media and popular culture often exaggerate minute aspects of life and make them seem like a crisis, which then the public focuses on like sheep (there's a reason what you watch on TV is called "programming"). The same thing happens with all this Newage (rhymes with sewage) crap going on here. Take terrorism for example:

    US population: 295,734,134

    9/11 deaths: 2,986
Number killed in Iraq (DoD confirmed as of Jan. 5, 2006): 2,182 total deaths
    Number killed in Afghanistan: 259
Number of people killed by anthrax attacks: 5
TOTAL TERROR RELATED DEATHS IN USA: 5,432

Number of murders in the US in 2003: 16,528
      - Americans are three times better at killing Americans than people
who are suicidally deperate to kill Americans.

Number killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2001: 42,443
      - Cars are eight times more deadly than terrorists.

    Vietnam War deaths: 58,226
    American deaths in WWII: 400,000

% of Americans killed by terrorism: 0.0018367849279109593754233320932781%

Osama is a pussy. How about a War on Cars, or a more efficient use of the hundreds of billions of defense dollars? Let's target the real threats, like leaky dams and cars.

I think I get what you mean, but in the interest of humor: when was the last time a porno site popup killed you? For a more realistic bridge between far out sf and reality, read Peter Watts. The first two books in his Rifters trilogy are scheduled for reprint in 2007, and until then , he has made them available for download in PDF format on his website under the CC licencse http://rifters.com/real/shorts.htm

They're really good and very well researched. The part about viral software and malware is in the second book.

  6. Addressing a couple of issues on Bullying Affects Social Status? · · Score: 1

For all people interested in society's new love of behaviour drugs, look up Thomas Sasz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Szasz. Basically he says if it can't be scientifically verified, like cancer, then it should be unlawful to force treatment on something so subjective, and instead be left as a private matter between the individual and the doctor.

Three quotes I like that apply to this subject are Roosevelt's "Talk softly and carry a big stick" and Malcolm X's "Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery." and "Power never takes a back step - only in the face of more power." Kids should be taught to fight back if they have to, preferably before it becomes a problem. I also, for many more reasons than I care to list here, am in favor of keeping gun laws that let me have a gun (training is essential for anyone, and I don't have kids).

The only way martial arts classes are to a kid's advantage are if it has actual fighting, even limited by rules and pads. I took Olympic-style competition Taekwondo (similar to kickboxing) as a kid and competed regularly. Basically, one learns to dodge, block, take a hit, and counterattack best when under the pressure of neccessity. Better that be in a ring with refs, judges, and spectators than out in the parking lot after school. Once I picked a fight with two guys bullying some kids, and I was able to kick their asses mostly because I knew that they weren't intent on crippling or killing me and I wasn't afraid of anything less than that. Next week in school they jumped me, and once again I knew I wasn't in any real danger so I didn't fight back. Only they were in trouble for fighting on school grounds, which was a mandatory suspension (a stupid rule - how can one defend themself?).

There's a difference between being unsocial and antisocial. Someone who is unsocial, in my opinion, is someone who would rather be alone or with a small group of real friends doing something that is actually fun, cool, and intellectually stimulating (i.e. not watching football, 'dancing' which is really sex with clothes on, drinking, gossiping, or talking about nothing, or doing drungs - unless you call drungs mentally stimulating). Antisocial people feel no emotions toward others, essentially treating people like objects or machines.

Lastly, I disagree with Pelt. I hate humanity, but can stand some people.

I agree with you about it being treated as a legal matter, although there's a problem.

What if it isn't assault? What if it is a mix of verbal abuse, stealing their belongings to tease them with, stuffing them in lockers, tripping them in the hallway, and other stuff short of actually attacking?
If you 'fight back' to this, it'll just get worse, or if you try to end it, you are the assaulter.

Belligerent bullies are the easiest, because you can goad them into a fight, kick the shit out of them once or twice, and then be left alone. But what about the less violent bullies?

It is possible to be withdrawn without being severing all human contact. Although many Muslims are upset about these cartoons for depicting Mohammed and for criticizing Islam, the reason they are so angry is becuase most countries in the area have state news agencies and so to many the cartoons are seen as an 'official' or majority opinion. The idea of a free press where an individuals's opinion is heard, especially a unique one, is unheard of. It is seen as an attack by all of the West, not just that cartoonist.

In the US and Europe, a cartoonist that does something offensive, say in this case South Park using Jesus in an 'offensive' way, results in comlaints to the network and/or the creators.

In the most of the Middle East, a cartoon (which seems to me to be criticizing Islam for being violent, ironically), is met with smoldering generic rage against not just the cartoonists, or the newspapers, or the country, but all western nations.

I am dissapointed in the crackers though. I would have thought that repressed people that had internet access would be a little more aware and less sheep-like than the unwashed masses that are usually manipulated by their rulers.

My favorite quote from a bbc article yesterday went something like this: "This is a test by western nations to see if Muslims are radical or not. Death to them and their newspapers." I wonder why they think we think they might be dangerous...

Oman is a perfect example of what a determined, hard-working people behind a good ruler can do. Very inspirational, if only the rest of the Mid-East could follow this example. It's one of the nicest countries anywhere, and I have been all over the US, Europe, and Asia.
