The expansion would just be different as in developing special programs for all the stupid special interest groups.

When did you get the idea that Republicans favor military spending to create jobs for the lower class, maybe I'M missing something? You think thats going to actually create jobs? No. They favor the small business... I don't agree with everything, but they favor supporting capitalism by cutting taxes so those businesses can spend more on internal things (thus creating more jobs, real jobs).

The redistribution of wealth in the broad sense you describe is more akin to economic systems described in Cultural Anthropology.... I'm talking the big creation of social programs. Both sides are guilty; but if you actually read the positions of various politicians in different regions of the two major parties, you'd see the differences. I agree on the bizarre military adventures though; the high command seems to be butting heads with the government... much like the Vietnam war. But you failed to mention that the lefties also voted for it all too; with the same intelligence information presented to the other side (however flawed it might have been); you can't blame that on one side of Congress.

I don't think its time for new rhetoric (at least what I said anyway). This country isn't bad and I really love it; its just got some flaws in it. Flaws that can be fixed, however. But, nicely demonstrated by yourself, we like to shift blame for our problems onto someone without taking at least some responsibility for ourselves.

See where I'm going? There is a point where you lose effectiveness in your army's power based upon the cost to run it... I agree. Maybe those who are cynics (at best) about humanity's ability to overcome problems just don't feel that way. But usually they are undereducated in human history and evolution in general.

We are where we are because we adapted better. Our culture is our adaptation... our culture essentially is the evolution of humans. We are far advanced of anything before us... even mere language that you take for granted everyday is so vastly complex that even our closest relatives, chimps, etc; cannot even attempt to master it. Sure they can use sign language and use the phonetics to form new ideas (which is a good indicator of intelligence), but after many years of training only. How long does it take a child to start forming complete sentences? Not very long.

Global climate change will be a minor inconveniance for the Western World. I can't say much about the rest because they are still stuck about 500 years behind in social and political development. Their society is still pre-Enlightenment and pre-Scientific Revolution (if you wanted to equate it similarly to western development). Religion dominates much of it; whereas in the Western world it means really nothing anymore.

If it gets bad, we'll still adapt and the problem will be dealt with. Its been that way since the beginning of human history. Its why the Inuit can live up north so well with no genetic differences to adapt them to the cold; and its why tribal societies with no outside interference can exist in the deserts of Africa and the high-altitude plateaus of South America. To the cynics: humanity is FAR more adaptable than you think.

It might even be the best thing to ever happen. Huge government investment into alternative fueling sources like real, usable fusion power; hydrogen fuel cells and their various hybrids, synthetic fossil fuels, etc. Right now no governments are really throwing their weight into these problems... they're still stuck in dealing with funding for stupid social programs, religious absolutists, and idiotic two-party systems (like the US - democrats and republicans both suck in equal amounts).

In the main article here, the author is describing a 40 hour game being too long. I can think of several games off the top of my head that took a good bit more than 40 hours to complete but never lost my attention.

Its because they're GOOD GAMES. Good stories keep attention.

Xenogears took me over 60 hours to beat all the way through and the many sidequests the first time through. Why? I wasnt using a hint manual the first time; except for labeling all the sidequests and giving me a hook to find them with. I still find Xenogears to be one of the best games of all time. FFVII is another... All of the extra content took me over 70 hours to finish (beating the Ruby and Emerald weapons, etc).

I think my point is, an "overly-long" game can't be defined concretely as a matter of time. It needs to be more abstract as you mentioned; "not bloated, repetitive, or tedious". Most games have some kind of these characteristics. Random battle scenes are an example in Xenogears... but there are factors that will make it worthwhile. For me its all about the story.

Chrono-trigger was a good example of a game that wasnt overly-long and still closed everything great. Took me about 15? hours to beat the first time. Wish there were more modern games like this. I hope FFXII does well... and they don't turn it into some stupid transvestite's heaven like FFX: part 2 was. The whole guys enjoying playing a woman character is kinda creepy; maybe its just me :)
