Kind of meandering thought but I once remember a cop telling me: "you would really be surprised what the human body can take", referring to bullet wounds and the like. It's kind of amazing how resilient the body is when you think about it.

And that's all true, most weapons are actually really crappy at "humanely" killing something. That's why if you ever take a gun class they urge you to always aim for the head (not just from a legal standpoint, but from a moral/ethical one).

I agree, It just depends how serious you are about your audio.

Making sure the audio onboard has good separation/insulation costs nothing though if you just don't want things like hissing noises.

This is true, that's also why it's a good idea if you're shopping for a motherboard to make sure and look at how much insulation/separation there is between the sound chip and the rest of the board.

Most good boards go even further with EM shielding around the chip (usually a little metal box in one corner of a board all by itself). Even with all this you can get interference and hiss from cables to close to each other.

I used to think it was just cheap chips/meterials too until I actually looked into it, it's all about interference from the electricity itself.

In mike mulane's book riding rockets, he mentioned that they suspected both jan and mark probably had sex (he wasn't on that flight).

Lots of interesting and funny stories in that book, one seemed to insinuate that they all knew (or suspected) sally ride was gay and that her marriage to hoot gibson didn't really seem to make much sense (since he was described as being a very planet AD womanizing type fighter jock and she was a pretty hardcore feminist).

He didn't seem to get along with her and said she always acted like she had a chip on her shoulder and kind had no sense of humour, he also thought judith reznik deserved being the first american woman in space more since judith wanted to be a career astronaut and he felt sally ride was more there for the prestige (I guess since she only flew twice before leaving). ....mind you this was all wrote about years before she died, I doubt he would have said much about her today.

The issue is that nothing radically new has been invented (like was in the late 19th and early 20th century). An analogy would be we are hitting mores wall and we have been just making things more efficient for the last 40-100 years.

I agree though that this country was in the right place at the right time, with the right laws and system, ect. There are a few other connections too, like for instance the UK giving the US pretty much all experimental research during WW2. It would be tantamount to the US giving all its technology secrets to china or india and seeing those economies benefit. On top of that, we also got most of germany's secrets and scientists.
